Any difference betw a 'polymath' kitchen and its opposite

Holistic plllog helped me see why I'm slow with details. It'll be a Duesenberg to me. A marriage of both function/form, efficiency/ comfort, power/panache. I'm quoting from http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg0616543217722.html

Hmmmm.... Since the opposite of "polymath" is "uneducated in any subject", or possibly, what translates from the German as "subject idiot" which is someone of great learning in one narrow field and otherwise thoroughly ignorant, yes, I'd say there was a difference! I can't imagine a polymath remaining uneducated about kitchens after undertaking one. Rather the polymath will learn as much as possible in order to make the best possible decisions. Worked for me, anyway, :) The opposite would be the one who sees the model at a kitchen showroom and says, "install that," and that's the start and finish of involvement in the kitchen design.

There is another opposite of polymath. It is "expert in a single subject area." Does not have to be "expert in NO subject area."

A polymath's kitchen might not make sense to the general public. All those books, those instruments for measuring and weighing, those plants and collections and specialized equipment, and assorted dedicated spaces for specific tasks. [Hmmm. Wonder if I'm headed toward polymathism....this sounds like my kitchen. Gotta get some special brain matter to go along with it. ]

The door can open both ways. A fridge can open from both sides. It's one door with the right mechanism on both sides so that it can either open from the left or the right, at any time with no adjustment necessary. With this either-or door, a fridge in a corner near the doorway can be opened by someone standing just outside the kitchen. Good for getting snacks. I repeat: a single door, with hinges on both sides, and depending on which way you pull the centered horizontal handle makes the hinges on one side or the other become the pivot hinges, and the other hinges aren't used. It works very well. My description so far doesn't explain how the "unused pair of hinges" keeps out of the way. I'll have to go look again, one day. It's the opposite of a French Door concept where you have to get right in front of the fridge and open two small doors. 60 years ago there was a brand that sold these. " Philco V-Handle Refrigerator".

I did and I LOVE it. Mine was more out of frustration than room size or natural light. Our living room front wall, the front door, and the dining room front wall are all one in the same (with no separation). Instead of having a color change somewhere in the middle, we finally painted it all one color (Shaker Beige). We then painted our 3 remaining dining room walls Shaved Chocolate (yummy lol) and our 3 remaining living room walls Olive Leaf (I think). It was the best solution to our problem and looks great, imo. And I agree with Mitchdesj, what your eye tells you. Once I finally started trusting myself and others here, I have never been happier.

I agree with everyone else - if you love wood, go for it. My house is almost 100 and still has the original red oak floors. I also got crazy looks from KDs when I said I wanted not just to keep my wood floors, but to have all wood countertops, too (so of course I didn't hire them!). My current KD was totally open to the idea of going all wood, and now that it's done, he's going to come and take photos for his own album! I love the warmth of the wood (maple cabinets, maple BB with black cherry edging, finished with mineral oil - which I do have to apply about once a month or so). I do mop up drops/spills on the floors and countertops quite religously now as they are all newly finished. However, the 20 years prior to this reno, I wasn't so vigilant with mopping up the floors, and they survived so much so that if I hadn't moved a wall to open up the kitchen, I wouldn't have needed to refinish them. The wood finishing company told me the way to care for wood floors is to damp-mop them! So, yes, wood and water can and do co-exist. Good luck :)

No problem caryscott, it's good to hear all comments. True, I do not live in Canada so the 30" would be the correct cutout. After much consideration and obession about the gaps, I think I'm going to 'try' and live with it:) I have a small galley kitchen and they would have to literally rip out the granite and b/s to correct the gaps. At this point, I'm just 'tired' and want this all behind me. My son & DIL thinks it's fine the way it is. I've just never seen that much space between the counters and stove before. The thought of going through all that again is upsetting. Maybe down the road, I'll get a slide in stove which has the outer edge [lip] on either side. I know that I'm letting this guy off the hook by not insisting that he correct the problem. There's just so much work involved to do that and I know he would fight me on that. I feel like I'm whimping out...guess I am:)

Well, sounds about right for one, anyhow.

Wish I'd done as you say the opposite should behave. Would've been easier on my sanity and saved a lot of nonsense education about kitchens that I'm sure has displaced information I actually need in my day-to-day existence. *smile*

Sherlock Holmes was IMO the best and greatest of all specialists: upon learning from Watson - much to Watson's dismay that ol' Sherlock didn't know this - that the moon revolves around the earth (or that the earth circumnavigates the sun) he proceeded to chastise him for feeding him useless information that had no purchase for him in his avocation and announced that having learnt this info, he was going to try to forget it so that hopefully he could recapture the doubtless useful bit of information that that piece of trivia had knocked out :-)
