Wood in the kitchen. Why does that get such opposition?

We have a kitchen that is connected to a few rooms, all those rooms have hardwoods. I generally like, though don't require, same flooring throughout a floor. I am considering having someone quote us to match up and install hardwoods in the kitchen once we remodel.

I get the strangest looks and just flat out, almost a little too passionate, stern reactions and comments.

"Why would you do that?" or "There is water in the kitchen, wood and water don't mix." or "Tile belongs in kitchens."

I don't have a strong ABSOLUTE opinion about wood in the kitchen, it really boils down to the fact that I've had the darndest luck with tile- grout and I are not buddies. I like the rectangular tile, with darker grout lines, but I dunno, I just kinda think about the "easy" choice to continue the flooring from the other rooms.

Am I missing the memo about wood in the kitchen? I see it ALL the time.

What's the deal?
