can I paint two different colors on opposite walls?

Have a small house with living room/dining room opening to kitchen.

I'd like to paint one side wall a lighter color and one a dark rust shade with a lighter color in the kitchen also.

Are there any "rules" about doing this?

(not much natural light anywhere)

There are basically no rules except what your eye tells you; can you post a few pictures ? if not, try to visualize the dark contrasting wall and how the eye will be drawn to it, is there going to be furniture on that wall, any art ?

I did and I LOVE it. Mine was more out of frustration than room size or natural light.

Our living room front wall, the front door, and the dining room front wall are all one in the same (with no separation). Instead of having a color change somewhere in the middle, we finally painted it all one color (Shaker Beige).

We then painted our 3 remaining dining room walls Shaved Chocolate (yummy lol) and our 3 remaining living room walls Olive Leaf (I think).

It was the best solution to our problem and looks great, imo.

And I agree with Mitchdesj, what your eye tells you. Once I finally started trusting myself and others here, I have never been happier.

I like your colors so far and the way the refrigerator blends. Deedles' suggestion is a great way to go to integrate what you have into one cohesive pretty look. This is what I would do, but it's not the only possibility. If you enjoy the look of separate blocks of colors playing against each other and want to continue that direction instead, you could use the curtains to introduce another block. You could either go relatively calm by choosing a color (or overall color in a patterned fabric) close to the ones chosen, like a gray-green or lavender blue. Or you could add more energy by contrasting with something like a yellow or orange. In both cases, since your existing colors are medium on the lightness-darkness scale and medium in brightness, neither crayon-bright or dull, the most foolproof way to achieve a look that really works would be to do the same with your curtains: medium/medium. That way contrast is kept to the actual pattern or hue chosen, while the other factors remain harmonious and allow it all to work together instead of fighting. Have fun.

Thanks all! Really wish I remember the paint. I did examine it once and it wasn’t any special off brand kind. It was black paint that was made for exterior applications. They didn’t prime, they had to do several coats and were really exceptional painters though, the kind that don’t use tape and they freehanded everything. It was pretty incredible. Like I said, after a year, some wear showed where leaves or debris had hit the paint and chipped a bit but quick touch ups were easy for me to tackle.

The dark gray wall would offer a bold statement if that is the look you are going for. If you would like something a bit less dramatic you can add in the dark gray through art work or wainscoting paneling around the space.

I think I am confused. Is the mountain with the water your view, or is that just your computer screen? If the mountain is your view, you do not need an accent wall, because no one will ever look at it. However, I am guessing that the mountain view is not the real view. I am not a fan of accent walls unless you really have something to accent. You haven't described anything worth accenting yet. I think you need to give us a sketched out floor plan with windows, doors, and openings, along with the dimensions and uses of each space. That will help us give you a better answer.

I painted the back wall of my DR one shade darker than the other walls (same situation as cathrugg, 1 long front wall in the house and the 4th wall wraps around to the stairwell) and now want to paint the other "standalone" wall (with china cabinet) the same color. I don't know if the colors you are considering are close to each other?
