Comments (22)So I was browsing something else and saw something that reminded me of this...if it's French plate, the marks are rectangles and not diamonds (as they'd be with sterling) and the "10" would indicate thickness (or amount? grams?) of the silver and the other would be the maker. BUT. I could be misinterpreting so I'll have to ask a silver guru to correct that....See Morepolish for sterling
Comments (17)I talked to a person at one of the major American sterling manufacturers and they suggested using your silver all the time to avoid damage or wear by polishing. When you polish, use a new part of the cloth whenever you see the dark tarnish spots on it. Tarnish will damage the sterling if you keep polishing with the dirty place on the cloth. Hagerty is the most gentle and after that Wrights but gentle handwashing with a non lemon soap and dry with a very old soft towel is best of all. Remember not to submerge hollow handled knives or serving pieces. I give my forks and spoons, etc. a dunk in hot water just before toweling them and they dry right away. Make sure they are fully dried before putting them away. A canister of water absorbing crystals in the cabinet or drawer makes the anti tarnigsh strips do the job better....See MoreAnswer needed from Michelangelo sterling flatware owners
Comments (16)They are a gift for my daughter who awaits a service for 12 arriving for Easter - she is so excited - I'm so happy for her but a little concerned as she feels the butter handle looks like stainless - not like the silver-looking other pieces I bought which have that warm sterling look....hopefully if it turns out to be silver and all the knives look like this one she will still be happy - keeping fingers crossed. I agree it is a pretty pattern and glad she prefers the more formal look! Also, the magnetic test won't help - although the handle won't hold a magnet, neither will my old Oneida stainless knife handles from the 70's and 80's. I wonder how long I have to leave the knife in with the hard boiled egg-half before it begins to tarnish.?...See Morewhat to do w/sterling flatware if not washing right away
Comments (11)We wash my late grandmother's silverware by hand, and have left them soaking in a Pyrex baking dish with a little soapy water overnight . We used to add a little plain ammonia to the water for soaking/washing, but I stopped buying/using ammonia in the house after we reno'd the kitchen (and had granite countertops installed). I had had the silver dipped and polished back in the 1980's-early '90's because it wasn't in very good shape (dull, really scratched up, etc.). The guy who did the work told me to add ammonia to the wash water to inhibit tarnishing perhaps. Now we just use soapy water to wash them and then dry the pieces right away. I "polish" the silver with a "rouge" cloth before putting it away, so it is shined-up and ready to use for the next time....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
