In my previous kitchen I had stove, DW and sink in a row. I desperately needed an uninterrupted run, and since you have that I think it should work provided there is some counter on either side of the stove and the sink.

My kitchen is too small for an island, and yes, having the range and the sink in the same run is great. It just depends on the workflow of your space. The important thing is whether you are able to get from prep to cooking surface to place-to-dump-hot-water safely and efficiently, and in many kitchens that works better with sink and range on the same side.

My reconfigured kitchen has the sink and range on an L-shaped run with the sink on the long side and the range on the short side. The sink is 5 feet and a bit from the inside corner of the countertop. This is a touch far for efficient pasta-draining but heavenly for prep and plating (I used to prep in a 2-foot-wide space in a corner across the room from the range). That is also my cleanup sink so it's fine to have a little extra space around it.

There is no general answer to your question. It depends on the layout.

Prep happens between water and fire. You take food from the fridge or pantry, apply water and elbow grease, and deliver it to the range. So you need a large work surface in easy reach of both sink and stove, and with the sink ideally located near the fridge. If you prep on an island with no prep sink, remember you will constantly be turning to wash food, rinse your knives and spoons and measuring cups, and clean your hands. If you prep on the counter run itself, then that needs to be a large enough space to work on, and should not have the DW under it.

My parents have this configuration and it is OK - the kitchen has worked fine for 25 years and tons of cooking for 12 -14 people weekly. However, they only have about 30" between the sink and stove top and it is not enought space. That area gets crowded. It would be much better if there were at least 48" between the two (this is not a scientifically arrived at distance, just my estimate of how much extra space would be needed to aleviate the crowding - YRMV)
With better spacing, it would work great.

I have a straight-line run of prep sink, small counter (18"), range, large counter(54"), ref and pantry.

I'm really enjoying it - its very efficient.

Years ago I had a wide galley with the sink and range on the same run. It worked just fine for me. The fridge was across from the sink end, and I think we had about 4 ft between the sink and stove. I think it did have the dw on the range side of the sink, which wouldn't work for me now, since the kids often load/unload dishes while I am cooking, but the kids weren't old enough to be very involved yet, so it was fine.

Seems like no one really has an issue with it, unless prep space is lacking. I'll have 3+ feet to the right of the range and 7 feet of island behind me.

It just seem like it's not a 'common' layout these days.

Is the island between the stove and fridge or fridge and sink? THAT would be a problem.

OK, here we go. I posted this detail yesterday under my "looking for layout feedback" post. But, it shows a good closeup of the kitchen as drawn.

And, here is the whole main floor so you get the gist. Keep in mind that this is a gut-reno, not new build, so some concessions had to be made here and there.

The order is wrong. If you don't put a prep sink in that island, food will come out of the fridge, land on the island, move to the sink, move back to the island, move back to the stove. All of this will occur while people are loading or emptying the DW.

Just thoughts I have from looking at your plan:

How much clearance will you have between the fridge and island? You need room for opening the doors, and maybe pulling it out for cleaning or repair/replacement. Also the clearance at the other end of the island looks a bit tight.

How many kitchen workers? Do you have kids?

As some of us have said previously, I wouldn't want the dw between the sink and stove.

Also, think about your work path when cooking. Things usually go from the fridge to the sink, get washed, then prepped, then cooked on the stove. So you'll be going past the stove, then back to it.

The right-most seat at the island doesn't have much leg room if there is a full cabinet there.. it's hard to tell.

Per comments from an earlier post, I'm in 100% agreement in moving the dishwasher to the right side of the sink.

rhome410: There's 42" between fridge and island. 1-2 kitchen workers. One 3yo kiddo, no more planned. Not a full cabinet on the 3rd seat. Clearance at the pantry opening is 36". This is narrower, but I figured that the opening of the doorway will visually 'buy' more space, and 36" is wide enough to walk through. The island is 7' at the long side, 4' at the fridge side and 2-6 at the right side.

Any thoughts on what to do with the island to gain a 4th seat? Or how that might work with the pantry hall wall? Earlier, someone commented on the hall being a waste of space, but I truly want a pantry I can shut off rather than look at the goods everytime I pass through it. And, I didn't love the idea of coming through the dining area from the pantry to get the kitchen. Arrrg! Help!

To answer someone's earlier question, the sliding doors to the deck are a set of (4)2-6 panels, biparting in the center. The 3 windows at the bottom are fixed, but are identical floor to ceiling and match the sliding doors.

Shorten the island up for better clearance and put a prep sink on it. You really don't have enough room between your sink and range to work well as a dedicated prep zone along with the emergency landing space for the range and cleanup space. Also, the larger range is out of proportion with the kitchen size and makes the whole run cramped if the window location has to remain fixed. If the window can change, then move it down towards the right where only the DW is at the end of that cabinet run. That will get you more room between the sink and range, but the range is still too close to the corner, and the corner cabinet. You will have to watch every time you close the hinged corner cabinet to not bang the range, or else the cabinet doors will be limited to opening to 90 degrees. Either situation won't be ideal with less than careful spouses or children.
