Just happened to my bottom oven. I run the self-clean on both the top and bottom (not at the same time) once or twice a year. I cleaned the top one yesterday, no problem. I'm very surprised that this happened. A few people have posted that glass can just spontaneously shatter and there is nothing they can do about it. I don't buy that. It's possible to tie an elephant by its to tale to a dandelion and hang it over a cliff too, but no one actually believes that. I'm now 15 minutes into what I'm told is "more than a 45 minute wait" with Thermador.

I make a paste with Bartender's Friend rub it on the spots and the baked on spots come right off. Make sure you do this before using the self-cleaning cycle which just bakes them on more.

I did it that way and it worked perfectly. After reading several threads about this on gardenweb, I decided to use hot water and powdered dishwasher detergent. I didn't feel comfortable using ammonia, and I had the detergent on hand, so decided to try that way first. I put a large plastic container in my tub, filled the container with hot water, sprinkled a lot of Cascade into the hot water, stirred it around, and placed the racks into it. Immediately, black gunk started separating from the racks and floating in the water (first picture below was taken only a few seconds after placing the racks in). I left the racks in there for a few hours, and then rotated them and repeated the process with more fresh water and detergent (because they were too long to fit completely). When done, I took them outside and hosed them off. There were just a few spots that I lightly scrubbed to get all the gunk off, but no hard scrubbing. It worked great and was very easy. The second picture is the final result. I guess I could have placed the racks into the tub directly, but I just wasn't sure if it would scratch.

I highly suggest before you attempt to take apart your oven to clean the inside of the glass that you review your owners manual. I had the same issue with my Whirlpool wall ovens and I thought how hard could it be to take apart and clean. Please note my ovens are over 20 years old. I was able to remove the door and get to the inner glass pane but I failed to realize that the inner and outer glass panes are sealed and once the seal is broken its near impossible for a lay person to put back together. Well long story short I am now in the process of replacing my double ovens. According to my Appliance Guy some ovens cannot be opened to clean the inner glass panes. His resolution was for any future oven call in for service and let them replace the glass. If I had only known!!! But again the ovens were 20 years old and really needed to be replaced, but if I was thinking I would have waited until after Thanksgiving!
