Nifty vintage-y kitchen with red Chambers and fridge!

How cool and fun is this?

Hauntingly similiar to my pre-reno kitchen. Maybe if I had that stove and fridge I would have liked it better. And I was cursed with ugly red linoleum in lieu of the nice red backsplash.

Rococogurl, Thank you for that info. Really appreciated. Evaperconti, love the way the Aga looks. Could definitely do it, but with my inbuilt yankee thriftiness gene I'd probably be eyeballing it all the time expecting some other greater feat than searing. But I do really love the look. Solarpowered, I like the drop in induction because it would be lower profile, but my significant other just doesn't like the concept of induction. Would have to get him to convert. Still trying. I can get the Thermador for around $1,300 for a floor model (there's that gene again) so that may be preferred, but I am definitely listening to all the great thoughts here. And I'm just going to have to defend my poor little old early 1950s Hotpoint refrigerator. Just like Cpovey says I had always heard they were inefficient. Then I read an alternate view that said because they don't have defrost, water, ice, etc. they are actually more efficient. Again, this goes for the pre-defrost machines. The 1960s ones are supposedly higher energy consumption machines. My experienced appliance repairman confirmed this. But this was not good enough for me. Oh no. I did a test of sorts. The house I am renovating was vacant in June and July. In June I used the energy star refrigerator that I had. In July I plugged in the "new" Hotpoint instead. Because the house was vacant and I was not using power tools at the time, heat or AC I had a pretty good control environment. I was also not opening one fridge more than the other. The only factor was the higher heat in July which is what the Hotpoint was up against. The result - my electricity bill dropped by several dollars a month using the Hotpoint. So there you go, lower electricity consumption and I have a butter warmer. Thanks again everyone. This is all very helpful and insightful. If there are any other ideas I would really appreciate it. Getting close to a decision. Surprised no one came out in favor of the Bluestar.

Yup ... its all going. What you can't tell is the counter depth is at max 20" everywhere. The previous owner tried to be smart and installed a dishwasher by the stove, but its really impratical. I have to say, it looks much better in this photo than in reality. (This was the "staged" photo from when we purchased the house last year. The vinyl floor is painted red (and ripped all over the place), the cabinets and tiles are broken. I usually try to save as much as I can, but this time we're doing a full gut.

Thanks, marthavila, I sometimes have to look at it through someone else's eyes to appreciate it. We bought our house 11 years ago and it was badly in need of renovation THEN. Well, time went by, we had 4 kids, dh went through 3 internet start-ups, and the renovations never got done. Lauraella, there were times when I begged dh to sell our house and move us into a 1980's tract house - anything that was functional , warm in the winter and cool in the summer (lack of AC has been one of our biggest issues; we are taking care of that with the renovation as well.) Now, we are finally doing the renovation, but living through it (we can't afford to rent) has proved to be the biggest challenge yet. The GC had to build us a temporary kitchen and a new bathroom in the basement because they tore off our kitchen and 1 1/2 baths during the gut. The only way to access the basement is to go out onto the framing and down a set of temporary stairs. For about a week, the only way down was to go out the front door, around the back of the house and down the outside cellar stairs. IT WILL ALL BE WORTH IT. That is my mantra.

powermuffin, thanks for the caveat on the garbage disposal drain size. I'm not sure that I would put in a disposal, since we're on a septic and therefore quite rarely use the one I have now, though it's ~30 years old and perhaps just gumming anything I put down it anyhow. Since there are drains installed in the sink, I haven't figured out how to measure the diameter--oh no, sounds like real life math! ;) Definitely something to know *before* buying a new disposal! mtnrdredux, I have to take faucet concerns seriously from someone who put a pot filler in a rock wall... ;) Yes, the deck and drain hole sizes and what faucet will fit is now gnawing at me (heh, likely because the design questions don't have a finite answer like this does). the ledge above and behind the current sink (all along the counter and wood-covered in the other rooms) is actually open to the half-basement below with windows for solar gain. It's a hypocaust system where the south-facing windows heat the air and then there are fans that pump the air under the north side of the house. We also use a fireplace insert but the propane furnace runs quite rarely, set at 60, and we're at 8200' with an -18 degree night last winter! Well, that was a loooong answer to your comment! :) I *do* love having the ledge to set hot pans especially, which is why I really want to put tile/something heatproof there. I put all the pizza toppings on the ledge while taking up the whole counter handling the dough--feels like a real pizzaria that way lol! ptamom, I have read good reviews of reglazing for bathtubs but bad reviews for kitchen sinks. This sink is in good enough condition that I won't have to worry about that. Concrete counters sounds like they'd provide that contemporary/industrial edge, but I have concerns about the maintenance required. Also, the counters (well, everything...) has to be DIY which is why I've focused on laminate and lately soapstone if other concerns can be met. thanks for coming back to this thread with your thoughts! cheers

Adorable.

Although I can't help wanting to switch the fridge and the range.

And change the flooring.

And get rid of the flower strip.

And maybe have the lowers outfitted as pullouts, with pullout shelves inside.

Agree with Marcolo about the appliance swap. That would drive me bonkers. But what a cute space! Red is such a strong, fun color. I heart those chairs.

Very cool.
I really like it, and if I had this kitchen, I think I'd make the changes marcolo would...but that's a far cry from ripping it out!

Just a quick question, while I'm here: what are the holes for under the sink cab?

Ahem. You're showing your age.

Almost all old vintage sink cabinets had ventilation holes to prevent buildup of moisture under the sink and air out the garbage.

Well, my kitchen is 1952 and it doesn't have those holes. I guess they must've been cutting corners.

Well, Deedles, I'm with you. I love vintage stuff too. In fact, I was actually hoping to come upon a red Chambers stove after my vintage Smoothtop range died in the middle of my kitchen reno. (Not finding one, I ended up with the red Aga 6-4 instead.) Red is definitely not a neutral color though. Most folk either love it or hate it. In my book, this red range and fridge are super!

sorry, that looks a lot like the kitchen i tore out. ok, it was not red, but otherwise quite similar. lack of functionaity and zero ventilation made it not so charming.

The kitchen of my childhood had red counters with a high back splash like that. And the scalloped valance. Love, love scalloped valances.

Agree the floor should be some cool linoleum. And the flower strip goes.

And what does one store in those little lift up doors over the sink? The good placements?

The cabinets look like my old ones, except I didn't have nice deep drawers like these, plus one of 'em was only 12 inches wide.
Mine were the shallowest drawers ever installed in North America, and things kept falling down the back of them, into the cave-like bottom cabinets.
