Have you seen the new Caesarstone 'Wild Rice'?

Yet ANOTHER consideration for kitchen counters ... if I do white cabs.

I just got the sample in mail yesterday. It may be a contender! I think it is a nice alternative to black counters. Any suggestions for a "classic" backsplash to go with it?

There are so many great choices out there! So SO hard to pick JUST one!

That is really nice, Chamois. Something that'd be on my short list for sure. I don't know how it'd look in your kitchen or if you'd be interested, but you can't get much more classic than 4x4s set diagonally and they haven't been overdone for over 40 years. :)

Yes, wild rice and Asian rice are quite different. However, I found the posts re Asian rice interesting even though they did not apply to my question. If I understand correctly, wild rice grows in water the entire season. So I would need to have a pond to grow it. Come to think of it, I have heard of wild rice as a cultivated crop in the upper mid-west. I would also need to get raw, unprocessed seed. Under my present circumstances I guess I will not be growing wild rice. Jim

Has anyone grown wild rice?

I am attempting to grow some wild rice (zizania aquatica) in a small seasonal creek in my backyard. I just got the seed I ordered and have yet to plant it. I have widened and deepened the creek in one area, about 18 feet long. It is deep enough that it should retain water all year long, unless we get a severe drought. Does anyone have suggestions about sowing the seed, or other growing advice? I live in central AL, 7b. Thanks

Annie - that looks very similar to the recipe Byerly's has printed on the bags of wild rice they have sold for the past 30 years. It is delicious. They also have it in the deli and in the frozen section because it is so popular. I usually add sherry in place of the white wine when I make it. The tiny package of rice I sent is actually Byerly's cultivated wild rice. I sent it for you to compare the colors between cultivated and the marsh grown wild stuff. I will have to try Alexa's method of microwaving the rice. I do mine on the top of the stove OR baked in a covered casserole in the oven. I'll give the MW a try. Hope you come home to a tasty batch of soup on Sunday! And let me know how you cook the rice ahead of time in the crock pot. I got that large crock pot earlier this year. That would be yet another way to cook up large batches to freeze. I have to make a huge batch of the soup for the deer hunting trip. Getting the rice done ahead of time in the crock pot would be great. Teresa

Sherried Wild Rice Soup from The Union Station Restaurant in Bemidji, Minnesota 8 servings - 1 cup portion size 2 Tbs butter 1 Tbs minced onion 1/4 cup flour 5 cups chicken broth -- Note: Not the same broth the wild rice was cooked in 2 - 1/2 cup cooked wild rice 3/4 tsp salt (to taste) 1 - 1/4 cups Half & Half 1/2 cup dry sherry Saute the onions in butter until light brown, blend in flour, add broth. Stir constantly until thickened. Stir in wild rice and salt. Simmer about 5 minutes. Blend in cream and sherry. Simmer until heated to serving temperature. Garnish with minced parsley or chives, if desired. Wild Rice Preparation: 2/3 cups uncooked wild rice yields about 2 - 1/2 cups cooked wild rice Rinse rice with cold water until water runs clear Boil 5 parts chicken broth to 1 part rice. Add rice after broth is boiling Boil 25-30 minutes for soup 35-40 minutes for regular rice Stir regularly while rice is cooking Drain and rinse with cold water Note: Rice cooking time may vary with different wild rice. Taste rice while cooking to obtain desired crunch to rice.

I just had the lightest member of this family of colors installed. It's called Buttermilk and has been out about 2 years. There's also Shitake in a dark gray. I'm thinking of a larger format subway tile with a subtle mosaic behind the chimney hood. Something like this:

Blackchamois, Thanks for posting on Caesarstone's Wild Rice.
If it had been available last summer when I was picking countertops I would have been very tempted to pick it. Gorgeous!

I love it. It provides good contrast with the white cabinets, but also has some warmth. I think it would look good with a light greenish or blue subway tile or little mosaic tiles of beige, brown, white, and gray.
