Do widths of upper cabinets have to match lowers?

Say I have a 24" dishwasher next to a 24" sink base. (Tiny galley kitchen. :-)) It would seem natural to put two 24" uppers over them. Lots of narrow doors.

I'm thinking instead of doing an 18" single door next to a 30" double door. Same 48" total width, but only three doors. The advantages would be (a) aesthetic - wider doors will look better with the wide Shaker I like; (b) functional - wider access to inside of cabinets. BUT the uppers wouldn't line up with the lower 12" doors on the sink base.

Is this too weird? I got the idea when I was considering only an 18" d/w with a 27" sink base - a couple of KD's put 15" + 30" uppers over this so all the doors were 15". (There will be 30" cabinets over the fridge and the range also, all on the same wall.) I can't get it quite that perfect, but this seems pretty close...
