Cabinets -- how do you choose style, brand, color, custom?

We are a couple of months from breaking ground and we are trying to think of finishings. It is so hard to choose kitchen cabinetry! Hubby likes the dark cherry look with stainless handles and I am leaning toward the lighter maple type look with oil rubbed bronze... Jeesh!

I want something that is going to look contemporary, but not trendy. I am sure I will never get to build again so I don't want these to look outdated in 2 years. I can replace hardware, but I don't want to replace cabinets!

I see so many people doing dark cabinets with dark floors -- will that look trendy soon?

Also, what brand do I go with? Something like the Kraftmaid or Diamond look fine to me... I want good quality, but not breaking the pocket book, you know?

My budget for cabinetry and counter is $30K. Here is what I need:

Kitchen: approximately two 9-foot walls of cabinets upper and lower and a 9 foot island of lower (minus appliances).

Master bath: Double sink with linen storage in between that is about 9 feet

Kid Bath: Double sink that is 7 1/2 feet

What do you think of those free-standing console type sinks that you can purchase? That might be an option if we are going way over budget.

Our style is basically traditional/modern.

So... how did you start???
