Latest Kitchen Project: Somebody Else's Cabinet

Hi Gang,

I work, as some of you know, as a carpenter. Rarely, I get the opportunity to build something really cool, because , honestly, few customers have the will and the wallet to commission something of a very high caliber.

My current clients are the rarity, and I am happy to present this built-in wall cabinet:

The company I work for has been renovating their kitchen. It is getting near the end of the long, arduous job. The soapstone comes at the end of the week! They got the balance of the cabinets (protected under drop-cloths) from Crown Pointe.

The glass in the doors was from an original built-in in their 1895 home. They wanted this cabinet to be cherry, but I talked them into Mahogany. I'm really grateful that they bore with me through the long process of building it. It kind of took longer than I estimated. But it turned out way more impressive than I had imagined.

There's still a piece of trim missing along the bottom- it's still on my workbench; it gets a small hand-carved detail. The varnishing isn't quite done, either, but since I got the doors hung last nite and the glass panels fitted this morning, I couldn't wait to get it posted in public. For reference, it's over 6' tall, a bit over 5' wide. Each door is 18x48.

Oh my goodness that is just stunning. The wood, the glass, the curved shelves, the finish, everything is just incredibly beautiful.

That is a true work of art Casey. There is nothing as special as a custom made piece that incorporates a part of it's owner. Beautiful!

MM, after watching all the neat changes that blogger does with decorating her hutch, is what makes me want one to play with so badly. But I honestly have NO place to put one. I am thinking maybe here in my "dog den" (my 6 Whippets, my TV, and my computer. LOL) when my 18 yr old fish kicks the bucket. I want that 50 gal tank gone and its either put a loveseat there, or a hutch. My dogs vote for the loveseat of course. LOL. Trouble is, I've heard of these kind of fish living for up to 30 yrs. LOL. (he's a freshwater scavenger, Plecostamus, and looks like a prehistoric monster. His shark buddy died last year at same age. Anyway, he's here till the end. ;o) Lynne mentioning decorating your curio cabinet. I do that for Christmas with several of mine, but never have for other holidays. Can't seem to bring myself to pack or sell my many collections. MM, leaving you with my favorite quote... I love the mirror and its frame, but its not my first choice for that space. My first thought was to get one of those faux type looking stone wall sculptures....that might not be the right name. They are usually and inch or 2 thick, made out of resin, but looks like plaster. They are sold like art. I really liked the iron scroll idea too. Another thought is a framed print. There are tuns of framed art that have that kitchen flair to them....that fat cartoon looking waiter, fruit, roosters, etc. I see those items better suited in that spot than the mirror. Did you ever consider faux painting a stone pattern for your backsplash? When I googled stone art to post a picture, I saw some DYI Learn to faux paint stone. Kind of neat.

Have you thought of driving over the tray with your vehilce???!!! Maybe that will help that sucker come loose!!! I did get a good laugh at the tray. I had actually forgotten about it. I thought the BB was crash glass. How clever to use the broken CD's I actually had to go take a third look to make sure. Was it hard to cut the CD's up? Both your projects are great. Hope you get time to do more soon!

We had a full house reno turn into a kitchen reno. Actually, it was a full house down to the studs restoration after a house fire. They were able to save all the kitchen cabinets and we could have left it pretty much alone. I had fallen out of love with our cream coloured uppers and was thrilled to replace them with white, even tho we technically didn't have to. We also took out the wall between the kitchen and dining room. Life changing. But seriously, it was way better to have the whole house done at once. We had been slowly updating one room at a time as we could afford it, but it never felt like the whole house was presentable. I would advocate for doing it all at once and get it over with (if you can swing it financially).

What are you going to do with that 'extra' leaded glass panel that's leaning on the left-hand side of the picture?

BTW, the cabinet is drop-dead gorgeous!

That is so nice! They are so lucky to have someone like you who is obviously a Master...and I can tell you love your work...especially when you get to create something unique!

They have three more panels of wavy leaded glass the same size in their attic!
Maybe they'll have me build them a matching bookcase or other.

Casey, regarding the leaded glass panels: I took three panels from my in-laws house when they were remodeling. They didn't see any value in an antique built in buffet. Fast forward to my current home. I had the panels hanging on a wall in my living room and one of them was broken by an unwanted guest (during a fight, no less!) The police put a value of TEN DOLLARS on that panel! Needless to say, I can't replace it.

Like your door, this is drop-dead gorgeous! And the hand finishing looks to be superb - a compliment I rarely pay to most carpenters or cabinetmakers, master or not.

That's why the doors have hinges. When it's opened you go like "wow! look at that stuff in there!"
Seriously, in person you can pretty much see that there's more to be seen inside.
The cabinet would not exist were it not for that old glass. And I'm proud of those doors as well. Most people wouldn't notice that the meeting stiles of the main pair is the same board sliced down the middle. Did I do that on purpose?

I meant that it stands on its own as a beautiful piece, even without the doors,( without the stile of course)as the wood finish is so rich and smooth it invites touching. I love the curved shelves. I guess I didn't say it the right way. The finished cabinet with the glass doors is wonderful. You are a great carpenter.
But you know, with a little SW gold ivory it could be very nice! :)ducking for cover..
