Recessed Lighting Layout Help

Hi everyone,

Our architect has proposed the following light plan for the kitchen and I thought I would post it here for comments.Originally he had just the curtain lights around the island and we had him add the ones over the counters. Are there too many?

The facts:

Room is roughly 17 x 14

Ceiling height 8 1/2 feet

Lights:Juno IC20 5" cans with the 216 wheat haze trim PAR30 75 Watt Bulbs

At first glance, it did seem like overkill. But, as I thought about it, I can find maybe 2 I would get rid of. But as long as you have some of these on a dimmer, I think it's fine. And, I also think that how they're ganged up is more important. Are pendants on a sep. switch, can foyer just be a spot, etc...
One question I do have is will there be a light at your range? Hard to tell from this.

thanks for your response! Yes, all of the lights will be on dimmer switches. The pendant lights, the perimeter recessed lights, the 3 recessed counter lights and the undercabinet lights are all on separate switches so we can leave some off if we need to. The range does have 2 lights of it's own so I'm hoping that's enough for that area.

If you had to, which two lights would you axe?

I don't know what the rule is on this, but we put our 4" cans with the edge closest to the cabinet over the edge of the counter. That way, they shine right in front of you when you are standing at the counter. A 6" would get pushed back farther if you use the edge. Stand at a counter where you would work comfortably and look up. My thought is that you want the center of the light just in front of you and hitting the counter in front of the upper cabinets. To close and they wash the cabinet more than light your work space and too far back, the center of the light will hit your head rather than toe work area. Make sense?

If there are no uppers and just open shelving, I would center them over the counters to make sure the cans are not behind you thus casting shadows in your work area. I am currently in a rental right now while my home is under construction and the kitchen here is 12 x 14 (+/-). There are six cans, but they are not situated properly and cast horrible shadows in the work/prep areas (see pics). I think they should have installed a few more cans to light up a couple of the darker areas as well. But, the fact that you will be installing under counter lighting will help tremendously. I don’t know how much under-counter lighting counteracts shadows coming from the opposite direction though.

If you are planning an island then try to make the size that will allow you to have 3.6 feet all around and enjoy what you have to work with. The lighting position can be 12 inch centers from cabinet faces to wash color on the cabinets and bring out detail....try for spacing centered on the cabinets around the perimeter of the room. The lights need to be colors that work with the cabinets to make them look good....over the island you might want bright LED to give maximum work light.....lastly puck type lights under cabinets on the perimeter to make the back splash shine. Inspiration or possible rooms that might be what you are trying to envision. Candice Olson has a book about kitchens and bathrooms you can find online or in the library. She discusses recessed lighting in the kitchens I believe and online on her design site. Good luck.

One or two wall washers to highlight the mantel area will be good if you're putting great art there that needs to be seen. Without floor and table lamps, you'll never achieve the warm coziness that family spaces require.

The one diagonally between the island and the sink, and then the one two up from there. I know that on paper, everything is symmetrical, and I am a very symmetrical designer, so I get it. I also know that reality is sometimes different from paper and I hate a lot of ceiling distractions.
That said, I changed my mind about yours. I think it's OK since the dimmers and what goes with what is all planned out. My husband loves doing this kind of stuff: a spot here, a flood there...
I sometimes tend to be too conservative.

Our kitchen is roughly 14 x 13 and we have 9 of the 5" Juno with the wheat haze trim with 50 watt bulbs. When the dimmer is all the way on, there's a LOT of light. We usually have the lights about 75% power and it's perfect. The light over the sink is on a separate switch. You have planned 14 recessed plus 2 pendants over the island. That does seem like a lot. We have a total of 10 in our kitchen. That being said, only you can decide what is best for your needs. Better to have too much light, than not enough!!

chris45ny: I do like a lot of light but 14 may be overkill :) I guess we'll have to see what the joist positions are after we do demolition to see if all 14 can fit. The decision might just be made for us once we open the ceiling up and we may need to cut it back.
