I want a square sink but is it really too deep?

We started looking at kitchen sinks and i really want a square double bowl SS sink. unfortunately everything i find is at least 9" deep. And from reading posts on this forum, my understanding is the plumbing outlet must be lower than the disposal outlet. Our disposal unit is about 13" tall and my calculation tells me with a 9 or 10" sink it will bring down the disposal outlet to below the plumbing outlet. i looked at the Insinkrator hoping to find a more compact disposal but it is only 1/2 an inch shorter which wont help.

So does it mean i cant have my square sink??? Is there anything we can do, at all? Any advice is appreciated, please help!!

I haven't faced this, but I would think your plumber should be able to adjust the outlet -- probably going back into the wall and cutting it down. Nine inches is a good depth -- not overly deep. BTW, if that extra half inch matters, we have the Insinkerator Evolution Compact, and it's a great disposal.

Talked to my plumber over the phone, he says it sounds like our drain hole is higher than usual. Have asked him to come in to take a look, did look at the Evolution compact and that maybe a tad shorter but i guess i will just leave it for my plumber to decide. at this point, sounds like i cant have my square sink, but they look so cool =(

Something I never thought of, I opted to keep my trash can under the sink, where I have kept it for 30 years and lo and behold, IT DOES NOT FIT under the deeper sink. I took the pullout out for the trash of the mix because I didn't want to lose more cab space. I have always kept it under the sink and it worked for me. So yesterday I bought one of those rev a shelf pullouts and it just fits under the sink on one side. Whew!! No other option for the trash otherwise (without some modification of course :) )and I am happy again with the trash area. Otherwise the deeper sink is okay, if it seems too deep, I just move to the other side which is not so deep.. Swanstone Granito Fern76

The grid on the sink base makes it an inch shallower, for one thing. It also creates a work surface that allows you to use water in the sink without disturbing the other work going on (because water just moves beneath the grid). For example: draining yogurt, straining/cooling stock, draining salted eggplant, rinsing udon noodles, etc. Replacing our old chipped enamel double sink with a big single sink with grid effectively doubled the amount of prep and working space available to me. Like the original poster, I'd prefer a sink an inch or even two shallower than the one I have (Blanco Silgranit Diamond super single), but the grid makes it tolerable. I keep a small plastic tub in the cabinet underneath the sink, often to use upside down as a base to scrub a piece of cookware, which lets me do it without bending. The rest of the time, right side up, it's a basin for hand washing silver or glassware. For my situation, the advantages of the material and the shape of the sink (with grid and pulldown sprayer-faucet) outweighed the disadvantage of more depth than I'd like.

I'm 5'8" and the other cook in our house is 5'9". We demoed washing dishes at different heights, cleaning the sink itself, and feeding food scraps down the disposal and decided we didn't want our sink bottom any lower than 27.5" off the ground (meaning about a 7" depth (undermount) is our preference). We do tilt extra large skillets to wash them, but often wipe around the whole rim while it is in one position (holding on to the handle), which requires wiping near the bottom of the sink and leaning in (which we want to avoid if we have a choice -- and we do). Other people might rotate pots and skillets, and not have this issue or not care. Since we do lots of actions at our sink that cause us to want to reach the bottom, we prefer a higher sink bottom than many standard sinks today. Our main cook's aunt (who is 94) has a wide sink (original to the house) that is only 5 inches deep. She's only 5', though. That sink is a pleasure to work in, even for us at much taller heights. We don't want to go that shallow, though -- depth does have advantages for some tasks. Best to test for yourself, and see what tradeoff you prefer.

I think so. I think it will be really hard to scrub the broiler pan as it sits on the bottom of the sink. (My sink is about 8" deep, and I find that I'm at the end of my "effective reach" when I'm scrubbing something that's sitting flat on the bottom of my sink--I can reach well enough to press hard while I scrub. If my sink were an inch deeper, I'd have to stand on my tiptoes in order to really scrub something) I'm 5'2", so I don't have the world's longest arms. If I were taller, I'd have longer arms--but then, they'd start so much higher up, which would mean I'd have to bend over more (not just to scrub but also simply to reach in), which would mean it would be harder on my back. (do you have a "slop sink" or a utility sink or laundry sink in the garage, or do you know someone who does? The top of those tubs is usually 35" from the floor (so a teeny bit lower that the top of your kitchen counter), and they're 13" deep, often. (undermount sinks end up about an inch or more deeper than their own depth, once they're installed) That's what as 12" sink would feel like to work in--like a utility sink. You said the disposal is 13" tall but where is the drain outlet? I just checked mine the disposal is about 13" tall but the bottom of the outlet is 9" from the bottom of the sink. The measurements aren't precise sine I was just taking quick measuments but should be close.

Our disposal outlet is about 6.5" below the bottom of our sink.

This is how i determined 10" sink most likely wont work: Our drain outlet is about 18" above the floor, the disposal outlet as it sits now is about 22" above the floor, so the difference is 4". With a 10" deep sink, compare to my current sink which is 7", the difference is 3" plus 1.5" for the countertop, comes out to 4.5", which means the disposal outlet with a 10" deep sink will be 0.5" lower than the drain outlet.

When i called plumber he mentioned the usual height of a drain outlet for newer construction (like ours) is 16" above the floor, ours apparently is a bit higher than usual.
