Q re. Island/tables, table skirts, seating, contractors boo boos
Comments (31)Thanks budge1!! I just got off the phone with tabletops.com. Holy cow do they have good customer service! I emailed my problem, and in no time received a response from the owner, and he says he's received this exact same question several times and is going to work on putting something up on his website or offering something to deal with the issue. Says he's gonna get his engineers on it :) Nice. Anyhow, he says he's done something similar in his own house, and notched out the table legs (he used 4 legs, 2 butting up against the cabinets and the 2 end ones) and ran a small i-beam down the length on each side which rests in the notches. Then he said he used epoxy to level out the top edge that the soapstone rests on (since the i-beam's are never totally straight) and voila! Apparently it's been holding up for years. I might see about some cross beams still, and doing it 'ladder style' but it's nice to know someone else's experiences (and the guy's a table maker, so that gives me more warm and fuzzies.) Thank you so much for the tip!...See MoreFavorite affordable kitchen work table/freestanding island?
Comments (8)Thanks! @honeychurch, yours is great---I've been watching Craigslist for islands and tables, but hadn't thought of searching for work benches, so I'll give that a try. And @bmore, that is pretty much exactly what we want! Maybe it's worth trying to find someone local who'd be willing to build it and see how much it would run us...the main challenge there is that we're in a pricey labor market, so even a small woodworking job tends to get expensive fast, and I think it's beyond our DIY skills/equipment. *sigh* Possibly if we got someone to cut the wood, though, we could manage the rest of it? (One upside is that, since our wood counter is just IKEA butcher block, we could get another piece of the same wood to use for the top so that it matched, too...hmm!)...See MoreKitchen Table/Work Table/ Island on Casters?
Comments (6)I just changed my office over so everything is on wheels. So this has been my experience so far. It's great for cleaning and rearranging. The casters need to really lock down and you might think about using 4 with locks. My desk has two locking and two plain - its just too easy to push it around in spite of the locks. For example, I can bring the whole desk towards myself when I want to open up the keyboard shelf - even with the locks set. A different kind of caster on the rolling around shelves does the same thing - not quite as easily but still wouldn't put it in a kitchen. Maybe there are better casters in the world and someone would have a recommended brand. Alternately, if you're thinking of something that has some size to it, perhaps get or build a section to handle the actual work surface and stools but not move. Then "dock" something like the flyetta cart below on one end....See MoreDo I center the table and sacrifice the space between table and island
Comments (16)Hi everyone. There is no seating at the island. The issue really is that the doors make the placement of the light fixture seem more off center than it really is. Hard to show that in my photos bc I can’t get the whole room in one picture. If there were no doors there, I don’t think people would notice. I put the table centered under current placement of light fixture and put chairs around it. On the left it’s about 40-41 inches away from the island and it seems a little tight. I guess I also have to center the table in front of the doors, and then see how close it is to the island. If it’s too close I may have to change to high hats or a high fixture as someone suggested. I have 3 teenagers so my kitchen is always busy. I edited my post here. **its not so much the space for the chairs, its the ability to walk behind the chairs on the island side of the table***...See Morelavender_lass
