Show me pix of shelves above range! (talk to me too)

Please show me pix of shelves above range to hold salt, pepper, other cooking essentials. Has anyone made a shelf out of leftover granite? Can such a shelf be drilled into tile?

Please also talk to me about function -- optimum height placement? Are grease spatters a problem? How quickly do spices go bad because of high heat exposure, and how much is that an issue if I mostly use the front burners? (I would store salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, cayenne in small jars -- maybe 4 oz size.) I've bought a small stainless steel shelf, which originally I'd planned to install on drywall to the right (side of MW in this pic).

What about a utensil rail, in SS, above the range and the spice shelf (SS or granite) to the side? Again, serious cooks please comment on function as well as aesthetics.

Here's a current pic. The MW will be moved into its proper place this week, area above hood finished off, etc.
