Show me your black and white (ish) backsplash!

Hey everybody, we're in the home stretch or our kitchen renovation and we need to decide on the backsplash. We have white cabinets (Ikea Lidingo for those keeping score at home), a black galaxy granite countertop, and a marble/black granite checkerboard tile floor. The countertop will be measured this friday, and then we'll have to wait a week or so for it to be cut and installed. So we have 10 days to decide on a backsplash! We're thinking about continuing the black and white theme, but we're really hoping that you guys can help us get inspired to do something cool. We're not allergic to colour, either, but we'd like to have some black and white in the backsplash. So if you have a backsplash that you love and that would work in a predominantly black and white kitchen show us your pics!

What color are your appliances? If they are stainless, I think a black/white/stainless/glass tile color of choice mosaic as a b/s or accent would be pretty, depending on the style of your kitchen.

Thanks to "Ginny20" I received a heads-up about your post.
Our recent (October 2010)kitchen renovation was all (except for paint) black and white, including the backsplash.

Unfortunately ours isn't installed yet (a long, sad story that I may yet post today), but I can show you our prototype: From Kitchen Remodel The field tile was our special find. We found it on close-out from the manufacturer Unique Building Concepts at $2/SF. They had a little more than we needed, and we bought it all. The mosaic strip is cut from a 12x12 sheet also from UBC, and is called Nutmeg Versailles. Some of the tile matches the field tile. We couldn't leave well enough alone, though, and the teal 1x1s are added in, as is a copper 2x2 from Landmark Metalworks that will go in each section. The bronze liners are from Dal-Tile Maniscalco (I think that's the brand). We also have some copper quater rounds from Landmark that aren't in the prototype to be used in exposed outside corners. The switchplate that you can see at the lower right of the prototype was handpainted by an artist who has a company here in Denver called Taken for Granite. His specialty is matching granite patterns, but I think he did a great job matching the glass tile, given the difference in materials. We're going to have him do all of our switchplates/outlets. We thought we'd be done this week, but now it's looking like April at the earliest.

Jodi, that is beautiful..your countertops look similar to ours..we have Mysore Black.. Yes, I realized that would be too much...So, now I am thinking of a seagrass limestone with the glass tiles (2.5 x 10) and a white travertine (I found a porcelain one that you'd never know it was porcelain). I thought I'd start them off randomly so it wasn't in a brick pattern (the end pieces would be cut...but the rest would be the same)...kind of like a hardwood floor randomness. I'd love more examples!

There are lots of ways of bringing color into a room and you don’t have to do it with tile. Maybe a white mini star and cross would be the right choice for you, then you can bring color in with accessories. Another option would be a marble backsplash. You don’t have a faux marble counter, your counter appears to be white, so a gorgeous Calacatta gold or (if you want to highlight the greys) Carrara marble would be perfect. Think large format subway tile

Oh yeah, we also did a honed slate windowsill for the sink window, which is black and looks great.

Mine might be too much black for you, but there is white also!Nothing to really pick up the jazz in the Galaxy, just black and white.

Funny you should ask! I was just about to post our backsplash in progress pictures. It's hard to tell, but this is square (5x5) green tile below, then black glass [1x2] "fringe" (that's what I'm calling it!) and then white (er...Magnolia according to Grazia) subway. So there you have it..black & white. The grout will be very close to the magnolia.

Because the Grazia tile has a "fluid" edge, my GC propped every piece of the glass tile to keep them as straightas possible. He did an awesome job!

We did plain black 4x4s when we had to quickly find a bs for sale purposes in our old kitchen. We had galaxy on the perimeter cabs.

Thanks guys, that's definitely food for thought. Willtv, I like how clean that looks. We were thinking about having some kind of accent strip running lengthwise, but your backsplash works nicely and your kitchen is very similar to ours in terms of colour scheme. Babbaca, we do have stainless steel appliances and have been considering having that accent strip be some kind of glass tile. The ones that are mostly black look nice in those kitchens, but I'm not sure that they would work in ours as we're trying to keep things bright. But thanks for sharing the pictures, they do look lovely. I'll post some pictures of the kitchen so far tomorrow if I get some time.

DJHinVA, that looks very nice as well. My wife loves green, so that's definitely something we've been considering. How green is that tile? You can't really tell so much from the picture, so I guess it's pretty light green?
