Backsplash finished - sneak peak at almost done kitchen
Comments (21)Thank you so much everyone. My DH, who, with me by his side, has done all of the remodeling was so patient with my selection of the backsplash. Funny thing is that I circled back to the exact same tile I originally wanted. After looking at so many, not quite right whites, I think I finally got over the cost issue. I also found that by working with a distributer of Sonoma directly in california the price was significantly better than locally in the midwest - even after shipping costs. Lake_girl - our cabinets are also not a pure white, a soft white (Crystal calls it frosty white). The sonoma creamy is a little "creamier" than our white and without the grout they looke even more cream. So I do believe that the grout can change the "look" of your white subways. Bee - I will be more than happy to measure. I want to say it is 49" or 50" inside the posts but I'll measure and let you know for sure. Red - (Makes me think of one of my current favorite shows, Once Upon A Time - Red Riding hood :) ) --- The longer pulls are also a top knob pull. It is the TopKnob M965. My Knobs are the Top Knob M354, and the bin pulls are Top Knob M364. All in Antique Pewter finish. I found the best prices at topknobs.com. Loved hunting the web for the best prices for this project. My floor tile is from Italy and the local distributer thought their distributer "carried" it, but it turns out they special ordered so our tile people wouldn't order it. I emailed someone in Italy off the manufacturers website and they sent me a list of all US carriers. It turns out that I got the same tile for over 1000.00 less, out of Florida, including shipping. So excited! That was out of www.fastfloors.com. Love it when you get great deals on a great product for your remodeling efforts!...See MoreAre we moving away from tiled backsplashes?
Comments (20)MeMcG, oh, no....I am so not questioning if kitchens with tile are "in" or not. I'm just wondering if it is becoming "acceptable" to the mainstream to not have tile, or anything on the kitchen walls, except behind the stove. EAM, funny about the J&J comment...sort of do have stock, but only in a human way ;) rosie--I'm thinking if I paint it a color, I can change it! dedtired, yes I understand that they usually take their kitchens. The ones I was looking at didn't exactly look like they were going anywhere. I wish I could get some of the photos electronically to share. grlwprls, that is one of the looks, just the glass behind the stove. Angie, I can always count on you for some great pics. I know tile has been around forever. (When I was in Ephesus looking at the Cliff Houses that they are working on, the entire wall of the kitchen area was done in a mosaic tile, probably made of marble based on the marble roads and sidewalks). I guess I meant when did it become "expected" to do tile all over the kitchen, and not just behind the range? Pal, I think the editors are still loving the white cabinets in the kitchen, but it's the backsplash where they want to see more color used. ....from what I'm told. Well, I'm back to waiting for my samples of tiles to arrive in the mail.......See MoreItsyBitsyTeensyWeensy Backsplash?
Comments (13)Here's one example on Houzz, where I gather the tile treasures run 4" high or so, filed in with field tile to pick up the colors. I was glad to read they saved the original cabs. I like yours -- thickness and color might be a trick to match if it's going to fill the space from the counter to the window ledge. Do you have enough of them? In our summer, future retirement house kitchen, now without backsplash going on two years, I was thinking about something similar, so I bookmarked this. In our case it's either working in some AETCO heavily crazed tiles (a number of William McKinleys and Garret A. Hobarts...) or 4x8 and 4x4 Motawis I've picked up over the years. Here is a link that might be useful: Houzz line of tile...See Moreceramic crackle tile - durable for kitchen backsplash??
Comments (9)"Crackle" refers to an accelerated process of crazing of the glaze. If you're asking whether the tile is as durable (stain resistant) as un-crazed tile, of course it's not, but then backsplash tile doesn't have to be incredibly durable, really. Some crackle tiles have to be sealed before they are installed, but you will have to read the installation specs to know whether your tile will need this extra step. Most crackle tiles, tile and grout, should be sealed annually to remain stain free. Encore Ceramics produces a very popular, and much GW-beloved crackle tile that, if memory serves, is not outrageously priced. Good luck!...See Morejulieste
