I say by the fridge, only because of the uppers you have next to the stove - they will be hard to unload from the dishwasher. The fridge side of the sink doesn't block access to any of the other uppers (as much as the other option).

re: DW placement, on the fridge side, it looks like there could be contention with doors if both the DW and fridge are being opened. Same is true on the oven side, but you're less likely IMO to have the DW and oven open at the same time. (But during clean up, DW might be open for loading while the fridge is open for putting away leftovers.)

I see your range is next to a corner. Check your clearances carefully to make sure that the upper drawer perpendicular to the stove can be opened without banging into the handle of the oven door, and that your oven door can be opened without hitting pulls or knobs on that cabinet run.

What is your aisle width between the island and the cabinets to the right? Looks tiny but I realize this might not be to scale.

My thoughts were in line with chicagoans. I tend to use the fridge and dw at the same time, rather than the dw and range. So, it seems the doors would be easier to manage if the dw was on the range side. Have you "walked yourself through" prepping/cooking/cleanup in your space? That might quickly settle the debate you're feeling internally.

I would put DW on the fridge side of the sink. And I would extend counter as much as possible.

Range & DW close to each other might be a problem. I know it would be for us at family gathering times. We often have someone loading dirty prep dishes while another is pulling things out of the oven, checking the turkey, etc.

I personally like the DW on the right side, but that's me & what I'm used to. And it looks like the right of sink is where you will have more uppers for storing dishes & glassware. Think about the dishwasher in actual use. Also, I like that it's closer to the dining room.

I think the DW should go near the range because I think that looks like its where you are going to keep the dishes, etc (for DW unloading). I also like to keep the DW away from the Refrigerator because people in my house often come as far as the REF, get what they need, and leave the kitchen space. The DW might be in the way near the Ref.

I guess we're not being really helpful, because we all have different experiences. I would hate having the DW by the range for the reasons that redhead stated. When there are additional helpers in the kitchen, the DW is opened often during prep & cooking. Even when there aren't additional helpers, my DW is opened often by boys looking for something specific(apple corer, etc) or, rarely, placing one of the 3000 water glasses that they go through into it. A left hinged frig door might fix any conflict with the DW, but I can't tell if that's a scale drawing with the narrow aisle by the range, so it might not. Or a french door frig where all the leftovers go on the left side so that you only open that door to put stuff away at cleanup time might work.

It all boils down to how your family uses the kitchen.

Roseo, Laxsupermom is right. I guess it just really depends on how your family and kitchen function. I admit that I have not seen your layout before, so this may have already been discussed. Is there any possibility of stealing space from the pantry for your refrigerator? If you can do that, you may be able to locate the DW without any interference whatsoever...just a thought. I don't know what that would look like in your space or what it would do to your overall floorplan.

It could go either place for all the reasons listed. I hate prepping over the DW. With it placed as drawn, you'd prep between the sink and the range, and, hence, over the DW.

I like the dishwasher on the fridge side, so it doesn't bump into the oven and the trash (if located on the other side of the sink) is close to the stove.

Like Chicagoans said...check drawer/door access, perpendicular to the stove. My friend has that problem. Her new 'builder' kitchen has a knife drawer that won't open, unless you open the oven first or it bangs into the oven handle!

My first peek at your kitchen too. Um...why do you have such a ginormous pantry? Do you have no other storage space? Are you many miles from stores? Is there no way to put some of that space IN your kitchen?

I wouldn't want double doors on a pantry unless they swing in and out.

Well are you right handed or left handed? My DW is to the right of my sink because I am right handed. I rinse the dishes in the sink and put them in the DW with my right hand. To my that makes the most sense, just easier. I mean how long is your DW open anyway??

I see the open dw as a hazard for anyone cooking at the stove, so would have the same opinion as Redhead and Laxsupermom. I don't think it matters at all what handed you are (we have dishwashers on both sides)...It does help to be close to dish storage, which I'd assume would be closer to the fridge than the stove.

I suggest refrigerator side. For one, it doesn't look like there will be a real conflict b/w the refrigerator and the DW b/c they just "miss" each other. If you get a french door refrigerator, then they definitely won't be in conflict. If the door is hinged on the left, even a full-size door will most likely be fine. A right hinged refrigerator wouldn't even make sense b/c your landing space is either on the right or across the aisle on the "island".

Additionally, prepping over a DW, especially if it's running or being loaded/unloaded is not pleasant. And, by putting the DW on the refrigerator side, it allows you to have the trash on the range side of the sink and handy to all three primary work zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup).

As to that refrigerator, be sure the doors extend out past both the pantry wall and the counter on the other side. Otherwise, you w (Unless it's a single-door, left hinged refrigerator, then it only matters that the doors extend past the pantry, not the counters on the right.)

Could you extend the "island" further to the left (toward the pantry end of the kitchen)? You could then move the DW & sink down a bit to gain more counterspace in the Prep Zone. It would be nice to get at least 36" on that side...the refrigerator & DW should still be fine if the refrigerator is a french-door.

You could even put a seat on that end of the island and have a 15" overhang.

I would also consider at least a couple of inches behind the sink OR a 42" high pony wall to keep things from being accidentally pushed off the back. I think the pony wall would be the most useful in that regard. I don't know/remember exactly how much space you'll have b/w the island and DR table, so I don't know which is more feasible space-wise. To take up the least amount of space for the pony wall, turn studs sideways so the wall is only 3" or so thick, instead of 4.5" thick.

Where is your dish storage? In the cabinets across from the sink & DW on the back wall?

Gosh, thanks!! I was so focused on the 36" versus 2 18" cabinets I wasn't focusing on the function of the dishwasher.

After reading all the opinions, I'm going to leave the DW on the fridge side. The real clincher was the visual of me taking a hot casserole out of the oven, turning around and falling over the open door like a scene in a sitcom.

The fridge is a french door. I gave a lot of thought to how I clean up. Before I start cleaning up I pack up the leftovers and stick them all next to the fridge till I'm done cleaning and they've cooled down some. Then I open the fridge and stick them all in at once. So I don't think there'll be much of a conflict between fridge and DW.

The trash is going under the sink on the opposite side of the DW, so putting the DW closer to the fridge puts the trash closer to the stove and I like that. It'll be on a pullout with a magnet and pulley system so I can bump it with my knee and it pops out. I never think of opening the door BEFORE I put both hands inside a chicken.

The pantry is ginormous because it's a half hour to the nearest store, also we grow and can all our meat and most of our vegetables. I need to store a lot of weird, large things like canners, a grain mill and a cheese press, and all the accompanying accessories. I want to have them close but not sitting on the countertops. I like the swinging door idea, or a pocket door maybe.

Thanks for the tips on clearances around the range and fridge. I'm planning on 3 inches on each side of the range plus a couple added to that end cab. Also, making sure the pantry wall and counter leave the fridge doors able to completely swing open. Instead of paying for a counter depth fridge we're just bumping out a niche behind it by a few inches.

I'd like to extend the island to the left and out, but I'm concerned about not having enough room for traffic around it.

We've got the exterior walls up now and as I stand in the dining room space it seems incredibly tiny. I'm afraid I've made the whole thing too small and if I extend the kitchen any further it's going to be awkward in regards to the traffic pattern around it.

I hope when the interior walls and floor are in I'll be able to judge it better because - eek, it seems so SMALL. Framers are coming tomorrow.

I agree about extending the counter outward by a few inches. I would worry more about knocking stuff off a pony wall than pushing it off a single level counter. I think. I sure hope I have enough room to do that. Right now it feels like I can stand in the dining room and reach out and touch both sides.

Plates and silver will be next to stove so I can plate at the stove or helpers can set the table without coming fully into the kitchen. Glasses will go next to fridge which is again planned so they can help themselves without getting underfoot.
