Does granite quality differ between granite yards?
Comments (12)williamsem: thanks for the info. Your point about installation is well taken. I am working with a reputable kitchen design company that has a dedicated crew to do installation, including a granite fabricator. I've seen the work in their showroom (gorgeous!). Is that sufficient, or should I ask to see a granite install in a client's home? colorfast: interesting article about the dye in granite. We are getting a black granite (Volga Blue). Should I test the slabs as directed in the article? Good tips about what to look for in installers; I'll ask our KD about how their fabricator works. Still not sure about the different granite yards. The largest one in the area (60+ mile radius) has a large selection, though the slabs didn't seem to match well. Some of the sales people didn't seem terribly knowledgable. A yard that seemed more knowledgable, and had shops in several states, didn't have a great selection for us. The one that had the most beautiful granite (matched slabs, beautiful finish) had a sales person who wasn't terribly forthcoming for our questions (except to say that the granite was better quality because it was finished in Italy, but then he was Italian). How do you know whether it's a good yard? We are also relying on our KDs suggestions....See MoreO/T Travel to Brazil
Comments (46)Yesterday I filled out my visa application on-line (as required by the Consulate), and it took about an hour. They require you to scan and upload a 2"x2" passport type photo (and I had to get a new one made) that is less than 6 months old, and this must be uploaded to the application, along with a scanned signature, plus a scan of your passport and airline ticket. The last two are optional, but I included them anyway. I had to reinstall my scanner in order to do this, and it took me a while to get it working properly. They also ask for all of your names and names of your parents. My birth certificate name is different from my passport name, and so I had to include both. Next I will have to make an appointment with the Consulate in Beverly Hills, and they are open only two hours a day. I also have to glue a copy of the 2"x2" photo to my application, and we are going to get some rubber cement for that, which we currently do not have. We also have to get U.S. postal money orders for $160 for each application - no other type of payment is accepted. The reason for this price is retribution for the price that the U.S. charges Brazilian citizens. I think there will also be an exit fee when we try to leave Brazil, like the $20 we had to pay to leave Costa Rica, and I will need to find out what that will be ahead of time. We're going in the "off" season, and so I haven't made hotel reservations yet, but there should be plenty of options. However, some hotels are closed in June, due to lack of activity....See MoreMatarazzo Quartzite from Brazil?
Comments (57)Wanting to add to this thread that we got the Matarazzo quartzite in our newly remodeled kitchen 10 months ago and we are loving it!!! We have found it can* etch and have two spots that have come out. Once from a wet wooden cutting board, used as a drying board and caused the wood to leave a stain. That was my fault. Got it mostly out with baking soda trick. Another one was a missed left over drink spill that wasn’t wiped up possibly something acidic. But we still love the live stone look. It’s something quartz can never ever have ; the unique look and feel is something special. Every time I wipe it, i fall in love again! It does have stronger variations in some places but with our neutral style, it was the right amount of interest for the overall kitchen look....See MoreWho can name this granite?
Comments (11)I agree with Skippack Tile & Stone. Visit several stoneyards as their stock--and their prices--vary from slab to slab. I think that second photo looks like Viscon granite (also called Viscont White and Viscount White). It varies tremendously. It's beautiful. Please scroll down this thread to see all the pics of variations of Viscon.
