Well, since the cabinets involved are totally different and totally affect the layout of the whole kitchen, it's not really an apples and apples type of comparison. 36" corner cabinets always have more accessible corner cabient space than do blind corner cabinets, regardless of after market hardware to make them more accessible. Blind corner swing outs were invented to make a poor design choice better. It doesn't make it great. If you can eliminate a blind corner in favor of a 36" corner cabinet, you'll be miles ahead in space planning, regardless of any hardware choices. A corner super susan (wood without a pole) will make it even more functional. If you only have room for a 33" corner cabinet, then the door is so small as to take away that functionality over a blind corner, and might tip the balance to the blind corner with the pull out. A blind corner without a pullout is almost completely useless unless you have a small child to send back into the cavern to regularly retrieve items.

But, the overall space will dictate whether or not you have room for which choice, so double check that you even have room for a 36" corner cabinet.

Thanks, LWO. To be clear, there is enough room for anything in the corner. It's a big kitchen. I originally said I wanted a lazy susan there. The KD suggested the blind corner swing-out instead. I got the strong impression it was being touted as more functionality for the same money.

There is plenty of space for an angled corner cabinet, if that makes a difference. The current kitchen design has an angled upper corner cabinet at that location. The kitchen has 35 lineal feet of counter top in two opposing L's, not including the fridge and wall ovens that are on the ends of the larger L. I hope that makes sense.

My KD's opinion was the same as Live_Wire_Oak's. She told me the few clients that insisted on the blind corners came back later & complained about them. Things drop off and the only way to get them out is to climb in to get them...and you can't close them until you retrieve whatever fell off! She also said there have been problems occasionally w/the working of the pullouts themselves.

Personally, I prefer the super (or lazy) susans that have a back wall that follows the contour of the susan...so nothing can possibly drop off! Our old kitchen had a lazy susan (the one w/the center pole) like that and it held a lot & never any worries about anything falling off! It was also the only item left of our 13-yo kitchen cabinets that was still working like it was brand new! We had the type that has the door attached and rotated in. No problems w/doors hitting the cabinet on either side. If we had needed a corner cabinet in our new kitchen I would have not hesitated in getting a super susan! [We didn't need one b/c of the corner sink in one corner & the cabinet turned around 90o to face out in the other corner.]

Some people like to just put stationary (but adjustable) shelves instead. But, I don't like them. My MIL had them and when we moved them recently we found stuff in the corners that hadn't seen the light of day in years! She didn't even know she had them! [Plus, the older you get the less you like to have to get on the floor to reach into the back for things.]

BTW...my KD gave me a call recently to see how things were going and how things were working out. She said she does this to find out how various designs, appliances, etc. work out for each client. It's a great way to find out how things really work (and to keep in touch, of course!) That's one of the ways she found out how bad the blind corner units are!

The 36" corner cab with a super susan is the way to go. I would not use a single angled door, the countertop interferes with seeing and removing items.

Back when we were planning our current kitchen I debated the same as you. We went with the Super/Lazy Susan and I would do it again in a heart beat. That corner holds my slow cooker, rice cooker, blender, food processor, and various other things. These items are *easy* to get in and out. Seriously, IÂm amazed how much this corner holds  IÂd be lost without it.

Awhile ago I was in an arithmetic mood and did some calculations about corner cabinets. A full circle lazy susan gives you about 20% more storage surface area than a true blind corner (i.e., with the corner blocked off and empty). Lazy susans with the corner cut out give you 5% more, up to maybe 10%, depending on the size of the wedge out.

Corner drawers work for full overlay (which a true blind doesn't because the doors/drawers run into each other), but only have a negligibly tiny bit more storage. I'm getting corner drawers because I just don't like lazy susans.

The swing out things (there are several kinds) might actually reduce the storage area, from what I can tell without being able to make precise measurements. They not only fill a lot less of the space in a corner than a lazy susan, they also cut down the space available in the cupboard next to the blind corner. My cabinet maker won't touch them!

In a place where you have a necessary blind corner there's also the "Arlosmom solution". She put sideways pullouts in the blind area which slide into the adjacent cabinet. Obviously, if you're going to use it a lot you'll want to only store big, easily moved things in front of them.

I have two of these corners going into my new kitchen. One upper that has open shelves butting into it, and one next to the laundry sink. My cabinet maker is mounting the pullouts on adjustable shelves so that they can move with the shelves. I figure that up near the ceiling, I will only put the very least used things. Perhaps the lightweight roaster in the actual cupboard, and things like my extra teakettles, which I don't need and don't want to be rid of, in the blind.

In the laundry room I'm thinking I'll get baskets for sorting laundry so I won't have piles on the floor, and put them in the cupboard in front of the pull outs, so they'll be really easy to take out for access. I decided against built in sorters (which were on the list for quite awhile) because it worked better for other things, so I really like how this ended up working out.

someone suggested i not get the angled corner because it would be more difficult to reach back into the corner of the counter top - as I'm only 5'. not easy to reach the corner of counter top w/o an angled corner...

why would they run into each other if you allow for enough space from each corner? don't open them at the same time?

I have no idea how much actual corner drawers would cost - just figure they'd be more than regular drawers.

i'm beginning to think i'd be better off getting a bank of drawers on either side of the corner...and not accessing the space in the corner. i have very little space anyway and need all the drawers i can squeeze in.

I have two of those blind corner pull-outs in my new kitchen, and I really like them. But then, I'm one of those that HATE lazy susans - I've never found them comfortable to use.

On one hand, I'm a bit disappointed at how much empty space there still is deep in my corners, but on the plus side, these pull-outs are real quality storage, easily accessible, and extremely sturdy. They hold a lot more than they look like they can. I have all my cast iron pans, plus large jars of baking ingredients (flour, sugar, etc).

My old kitchen had the really bad blind corners that LWO mentioned, but DD is now grown too big to crawl into the back crevices to fetch stuff.

I'm getting actual corner drawers like number 78. As I said, they don't add any storage (just as much gets lost to the sides as would be lost in a true blind corner) but I like drawers and don't like susans. These are in two actual corners of a U. I can't tell you about cost. My cabinet maker charges by volume, and charges extra for any weird extra hardware he has to buy to make your dreams come true, but anything he can make is included.

If your full overlay fronts meet at the corner, you have to have a framed gap. That's not a huge problem, and they do them sometimes with integrated handles. When you have pulls or knobs, however, things run into each other as you're opening them. With framed cabinets and partial overlay or inset fronts, they just put an extra couple inches into the corner framing for clearance. With frameless it's generally works better to do the corner unit.

I'm not sure exactly what Alexr meant, either, about the angled corner. I don't really like them, but lots of people do. People tend to put big things, like pots inside. The advantage to the corner susans, which my old kitchen had, is that they rotate outside of the cabinet space so work a little like a pullout shelf in that you can look down on the contents and don't have to reach into the cabinets. But they don't gain you a significant amount of storage space.

Another thing people do with blind corners is have them open on the opposite side of the wall. If it backs up to the dining room wall, for instance, you can put in some drawers in the dining room for candles and napkins, or perhaps fit in a wine fridge. If it backs up to the family room, maybe it becomes a cupboard to stash toys or afgans.

I would certainly choose a lazy susan over a blind corner swing out any day. Those swing outs are notorious for having things fall off and block them. I also find them awkward to operate.

A good quality lazy susan turns so smoothly that nothing is likely to fall off. Also, it astonishes me how much our lazy susan can hold. On mine right now, I have one medium and two large crockpots (who in their right mind needs three crockpots in the first place?), a blender, a hand mixer, two food processors, two electric knives, and the extra parts to my dishwasher. And I'm sure I'm forgetting things! And best of all, every single item is completely accessible when I need it. Can you tell that I LOVE my lazy susan?? :)

I REALLY wanted a lazy susan - had one in my old small kitchen and as holligator said, couldn't believe how much it held. Then I learned about super susans here and was determined to get one of those.

As it happened, the way the design came together meant that in one corner, adjacent to the main sink, we wouldn't have room for a ss, and we wanted to have a symmetrical look for the cabinetry. Our cabinet maker suggested the blind corner pullouts. IÂm no mathematician (kudos plllog!) but I could see that the swing out unit wasnÂt going to hold as much. Our cabinet maker came up with a very clever solution that I'm really happy about. Rather than using the standard wire baskets that come with the unit, he built us two custom wood shelves for the bottom of each corner that use much more of the available space.

BTW, nothing falls off these shelves. But it must be noted that given the choice I would still opt for a ss!
