Hmm... I think I am in love with a blue fridge? Help please!
Comments (26)Hi guys, Sorry for the delay in responding. We have been on the road making other appliance choices. I was thrilled to see so many helpful responses when I got home. Thank you all for your contributions! Here are a few general answers/reflections: 1)Good point about this fridge not being built in so it can be replaced if desired. 2)We have yet to see the fridge in person (we have to drive a hour away so it is a long distance love affair at this point). I will see how the plates match at that time and see how true to cobalt it is. 3)We had thought about painting the island blue, but I think I would prefer a less bright navy colour. We had also thought about a dark walnut colour as suggested above, but not sure how that would look with a blue fridge. I don't think I could go do either perimeter cabinets, nor island in a royal blue. 4)We will be limited in our ability to match other appliances. The only other appliance we could get in the blue would be the DW. They make a range, but we are doing an induction cooktop and separate oven. So if we did the blue fridge it would have to look good with all stainless appliances. 5)We don't want the fridge to be the major focal point of the kitchen, as we thought the glass cabinet would be. The decorative glass we are going for on the glass cabinet is a repeat of the decorative glass we have on the front door (Lexington glass from Trimlite). 6)I agree that others have asked about alternatives to stainless steel fridges on this forum and there are some great options besides the blue. I am having trouble finding any ratings on this fridge, so the fridge itself needs to function well as a fridge, not just look pretty. 7)You are right that I need to consider balance, and one bold coloured appliance may not work alone 8)We definitely want a stained island colour as mentioned to limit dirt as we have a family. I will get my light painted cabinet fix with the perimeter cabinets. 9)The plates could go in my dining room if they look bad with the fridge. I have another collection of Hummel plates that could go on the kitchen plate shelf (the Hummels are creams, brown colours). 10)Thanks to all who posted on how to tie in the blue colourwise. This is an area that I need help with for sure. You have given me lots to think about. What shade of cream would look okay with the blue? Thank you all again for your time and thoughts. Sorry to not be able to respond to each and every one of you individually. Carol P.S. I am going to try to use the helpful suggestions of how to add an image of the Heartland fridge by editing my initial post (thanks for these tech tips)....See MoreSink - stainless or white cast iron?
Comments (29)Somanyquestions -- I like the contrast of a white sink with black soapstone and frankly I just like the old-fashioned look of a drop in cast iron sink. I like that big roll of white enamel that's hard to clean over! The silgranit sinks are beautiful, I will admit, and probably a lot easier to keep looking clean. As for the radon issue, I know quite a bit about both radon and radiation. In fact, I recently installed a pretty significant radon mitigation system in my house. And I would be concerned about adding something (e.g., a "hot" granite) that would add to radon levels. But frankly I doubt that a sink made up of ground up granite and plastic (my idea of what silgranit is!) is going to be any kind of problem. And, I doubt much of the granite is either. Of course, the fact that say over 99 percent of granite is not a problem does not prove that the other remaining percentage is also not a problem. The world is not black or white; it's more complicated. I'm banking on the idea that most granite is not a problem and that the silgranit sinks are made of some sort of run-of-the-mill stone. Of course, time and time again we find out that corporations have not considered the health impacts of various materials that are used in our houses and put into our food. I'm not sure why most people on this forum either fall into "the sky is falling" category of worrying that all granite is dangerous OR the people who are just nasty and think that worrying about radon is stupid. If you don't think that smoking is good for your health because statistically speaking a large portion of cigarette smokers will get lung cancer, you wouldn't want to expose yourself to radon either. On the other hand, if you think that "nobody has ever proved" that an individual person contracted lung cancer from smoking or any kind of cancer from any kind of radiation (nuclear weapons testing, nuclear power emissions, medical) because you refuse to look at the epidemiological (population-based) evidence then you're just a hopeless anti-science person. Why the anti-science people have to be so nasty is really beyond me to understand....See MoreWhirlpool Sunset Bronze
Comments (2)Yes, that is true, color trends come and go. Stainless is neutral and goes with most kitchen color schemes. White does too I suppose, but not so much with dark wood cabinets. Still, it would be nice to have a few other options. My old appliances still work, but they are bisque. Actually, I like the bisque color, it goes well with my light maple cabinets. But, since it is being phased out, I'll have to change it when they die. Although I like stainless, the fingerprints and water spots are not something I am thrilled about. I like the slate a lot, although that color is limited to GE and Samsung I believe. It would be nice if all manufacturers would have the same colors to choose from....See MoreAlternatives for gray sides to stainless fridge
Comments (6)For camouflage, I'm recalling a thread we had on this subject about four or five years ago but the new %^&*@! search algorithms are refusing let me find anything useful. As best I can recall, there were several companies that offer magnetically attached stainless side panels. Unfortunately, the only names I can recall are Frigo and Stainless Craft. (IIRC, these are custom ordered for your choice of fridge.) Several other companies offer "peel-n-stick" stainless "skins." The only name that comes to mind is bestapplianceskins. I've also seen similar products on Amazon and at the big box hardware stores (Home Depot & Lowe's). They are like large (36" wde, 66" or longer) sheets of contact paper....See Moreplllog
