sinks: stainless steel versus cast iron
Comments (10)I have used both, and I prefer SS, because the cast iron (white) always marked when metal rubbed against it. It was a two hole, 8" deep for both which was nice, but the divider was at least 2 1/2-3" wide. Since it was my second sink for this cabinet I had to go with a drop in, and the edge around the sink sat up higher than I liked. We have recently replaced it with a SS which is also a 2 hole, but the large side is 19" x 16" (I can fully immerse my large roaster/20-22 lb. turkey size)and it is 10" deep with a grid, the smaller side is 14" x 16" and also holds a lot. The divider is only about 1 1/4"-1 1/2". I have been using the new sink for over 3 mo. and I highly recommend it. Jane...See MoreProtecting the bottom of white cast iron sink--what do you use?
Comments (25)We inherited a Kohler Heartland cast iron sink when we bought the house and I love it. I decided to keep it when we changed out the countertops and I had the undercount sink in our other home and this one has A lot of room inside. When I need to clean it I use Mrs. Meyers llama purpose cleaner, baking soda scrub, or the vinegar scrub. It’s holds up very well. Most of the time I just use Dawn detergent. Good luck! If you are worried Joseph Joseph makes some fun tubs with a drain you can wash or dry your items in but you still have to clean those really well at times....See MoreGranite/composite sink vs. stainless steel vs. cast iron
Comments (1)We were all set to buy a Blanco granite sink until we saw one in an appliance shop which is also used for kitchen demonstrations. It was discolored with what looks like water stains and/or hard water marks. The SS sink we have has certainly seen better days. I don't much like the hollow sound of the SS sink. Then we saw the Kohler cast iron with that 'crakled' emamel finish and we both decided that was the one. We ordered one which arrived Friday but has some damage... so maybe the moral of the story is there is no perfect sink, they are all a compromise of some sort. I still like the cast iron, but it weighes 125 pounds!...See MoreTalk me into a Stainless Steel or Cast Iron Sink
Comments (18)I loved all the reviews of the Silgranite on this forum. I was inspired so I went to look at one today. At one warehouse the one there had a crack at the front out toward the divider, it wasn't smooth, it had white streaks and it looked plastic. Now some of that may be from sitting in a warehouse and not being cleaned but I am wondering about it especially the plastic appearance. At Home Depot, I could only see it at a distance so I couldn't really tell. I really like many of the advantages and the cost of the Silgranite but I'm just not sure about the look. I am used to my smooth, solid looking cast iron... Has anyone had a Schock-Houzer Granite Sink? I heard they were smoother but I haven't seen one in person. My worry with the cast iron is that I've heard that the new ones are not as good as the old ones. I would hate to be disappointed in my new cast iron! My current one I clean with Bar Keepers Friend and that's about it. It does clean up pretty well. I will admit it doesn't have the shiny look of the new ones in the store but it does get pretty white again with some elbow grease....See Moreci_lantro
