So disappointed, haven't sold a single tomato plant
Comments (40)Here's what I did: I always have extra tomato plants even after I give them away to friends and relatives. I used to just drop them off at the local community garden with a sign FREE PLANTS. A few years ago, I started labeling all my plants with plant info, my hobby farmÂs name and email address on each plant. Two years ago, I took all my spare plants to the local community garden and posted a sign FREE on them. The difference is this time I stayed with the plants for a few hours and handed the plants out along with information. Most of what I raise are heirlooms so many of the community gardeners were unfamiliar with them. I received several emails over the course of that season from those gardeners, many were thank you and some were with questions. I saved every one of those email addresses. Then 15th of March of last year, I sent out emails to all those gardeners, plus my entire address book offering tomato plants for sale in time for spring planting which around here is Memorial Day plus or minus a week. I told folks what I was raising and that I would be selling them this year. I gave folks the option of reserving plants or taking their luck first come, first serve on the 2 sale days I would be having at my house. I got a few checks and a lot of emails. Then as the "Sale Days" approached, I posted the dates on Craigs List. I potted all the plants up to 4" pots about 2-3 weeks before the sale, hardened them off and charged $4 each for them, 4 for $15, 7 for $25. The pots were beautiful 4" pots I got 10 for $1 from Christmas Tree Shops. I sold every plant and added to my database with new email addresses from the Guest Book I had out at the sale....See MoreRadiant heat under laminate over concrete slab
Comments (12)True. There will be heat lost to the ground. Nonetheless, do not conclude there is no point at all in having a layer of insulation: any break is better than no break at all. Think of wearing one layer of light clothing as protection against the cold: better than bare skin. Any small R (e.g. R2, R3) still directs more heat upwards than not. To place radiant heat directly on the slab means more and more heat is lost as floor temperature rises, not just 50% but a far greater fraction. "thin" , "not very" , "useful" -- terms undefined. A separation layer is better than none. Not to overthink this, just to drum it in. "Something" is more than nothing, and this is the significant point, not whether the R factor appears low or high. Once your floor temperature rises, you want to prevent sending most of it into the ground, which is what happens when there is no insulation / isolation / separation at all. Note that the definition of R rating testing does not allow one to distinguish between heat transfer occurring by conduction or by radiation. In many circumstances this is not critical. If you want to get into this level of detail, it will take a few dense paragraphs. Suffice to say that R ratings will be misleading and inaccurate for this application so do not rely on the apparent differences between R numbers. They are all small and that is OK. They are almost meaningless in this situation of a slab-floor separator with a thickness of from 2 to 16 mm. It is obvious that with electric cables you have more room for a thicker insulation layer. I changed the subject line to " ... took every stinky thing ...", but realized that she hadn't said that the things stunk, so it would be inaccurate, so deleted that word ... and it let me Preview, so I expect that it'll register, as well. Comments (10)The difference between these tiles and the Gucci purse from TJ Maxx is that you only buy one purse and it's not that noticeable if there are a few things "off" about it, because it's just hanging from your arm/shoulder and moving and not the focus of the outfit. The tile, if they are seconds, means that they are ALL a little off, and when you lay them all down next to each other, the small differences will all become magnified and more noticeable. And they will all be off in different ways. Tile is one of those things that, unless it is a really rustic, handmade style, is MEANT to be uniform, and you are guaranteeing that what you get will not be uniform. Additionally, the only tile installers that will install it will be either the extreme pro, who will charge extra for the labor needed to make it look ok (note, it will not look great, just ok) or the tile setter with very little experience or very low standards who doesn't understand the challenges these tiles represent. He will say "sure, I can lay those tiles, it will look fine" and then when you complain about the installation he will tell you that the tiles are the problem and you should have expected the result. Go read some threads about bad tile installations (most of them are bathrooms or backsplashes, but the concept is the same) and you will realize that you don't want to go down the road of having cheap tiles and an less-than-expert tile installer....See MoreAdrienne2011
