You could very well have a friend living under the cabinet between it and the slab...Cabinets aren't usually sitting flat on the floor (base of the cabinet) there is a "pocket" between the bottom shelf and the floor.

That's a thought. I'll be curious to hear what your cousin thinks when you tell him about it. I would imagine the cabinet could be pulled out to check underneath, but it would be a big job, especially if it is one of multiple units under a longer counter top.

Like terri said, there is a space under your cabinet...odds are you have a decorative molding attached to the toe kick area...running over a long length.
You may want to gently pull that off and check behind it.
Although some cabinets have a solid board blocking access, some do not. It might be worth trying.

And depending how the cabinets are installed and which cabinet it is, it may not be that hard to slide one out.

I can't imagine anything living in your home big enough to leave a urine smell and you not hearing it move around. Look for strange possibilities. My neighbor of long ago smelled urine in her basement. Her son finally admitted he was peeing in the sump pump. LOL

I've had a visitors a time or two .....they visit enough and it does smell like urine...

At the building I used to work in we would get the odor once or twice a year. It smelled just like cat pee. Very strong. We thought it came from some shrubs just outside the back door. Got any shrubs giving off an odor?

I wonder if this area is getting wet from time to time. That would account for the odor coming and going. (Dries out = Doesn't smell.)

Could there be a sewer pipe leak nearby?

My husband and I used to go to outdoor scooter meets, at one home the women used the home bathroom, the men used the porta potty. The house smelled of cat urine, really, really bad. Later I over heard the woman of the house saying the older cat didn't like the newer cat using her litter box, she just laughed about it. I don't know how she could not smell it. Ughhhh....

Is there a gingko tree nearby??? My neighbor had one and it always smelled bad near her house in the fall. I didn't know it was the tree. She finally had it taken out because it was so awful. Now it doesn't stink anymore when I walk my dog past her house.

Not that this has anything to do with Susans cabinets but, Ginkos are either male or female trees. In Fall the fruit dropped by the female trees has a terrible smell. Usually, only male trees are planted. The pollen is not a problem.

Notice how well I behaved myself and didn't drift even further off topic and make some left-handed comparison between males and females.
