How do I plan the size of my appliance openings?

I am keeping my existing wall oven/micro combination (I think) after the remodel. I have looked a little at new ones and the sizes seem to range from 42" to 50 in height. (width seems fairly standard within 1/8 of an inch).

My current one is about 42 1/2 high. Should I have the cabinet built to the exact specs of my current oven, or should I have them make it bigger and fill so that I can have more options when this one goes?

I am feeling burned because I planned the size of a fridge cabinet in another space to the exact specs of my current fridge and later realized that was stupid, stupid, stupid; another inch of height and I could have gotten any fridge I wanted; as it is I'm struggling to find one that will fit. I am not sure how to apply this knowledge to my oven situation, however,

Please tell me I'm right in assuming that DW and cooktops are more standard!!!
