Looks like we're getting a lot of bad granite installs recently.

It is not normal. Make sure it's the way you want it before you pay. Don't worry about the weight; that's why there were 4 of them. That's their job.

For the "gap" issue I suggest you post a picture. Usually the granite should extend to the wall without a gap.

I took a picture of the gap but cannot figure out how to paste it in this response. I did email fabricator and told him of this gap and the different overhangs on the granite. He is a very reputable person and said he would come over today or tomorrow with two of his men to see what I am pointing out. He said he would be happy to do whatever they could to make sure the job is done correctly and to my satisfaction. I don't think I could ask for more. I did pay him the balance of the job yesterday after install but I don't feel like he will reneg on his word.

Being the GC on the job, I have learned a lot about working with the different trades. There have been mistakes made by the cabinet maker (stack of drawers were 2 inches to wide), cabinet installer (hung cabinet in wrong spot and had to have new cabinet made), my microwave did not fit in cabinet made for it because specs on the official GE site were wrong (did a work around that no one will ever see), granite install issues and we still have the floor refinishing to go! All these errors have probably added about 1.5 weeks to job (for a total of 5 weeks start to finish). The most important advice I can give is to pick good character in the people you work with. Stuff happens but the cabinet maker, the installer and the granite folks have been pleasant to deal with and always ready to remedy the situation (at no additional cost to me). It helps that my cabinet maker builds his own boxes and we don't have to wait 4 weeks to get a new box built - we are waiting for the drawer fronts which he does order.

Well, not quite.

And since there is no measurement reference it is hard to know how wide this gap is. Perhaps next time you can include a ruler in the picture.

What it looks like is an old wall that may be curved and a straight cut on the counter. Depending on the size of the gap the counter perhaps should have been cut with a curve, or the templater might have advised you to call in someone to straighten the wall with a plaster fill before the installation.

In any event, usually a small gap will be filled in with caulk, usually either silicone or paintable. IMO it should not have been left as your picture.

If you're already to granite after just 4 weeks, that seems pretty good kleekai -- you're doing a good job as GC!

I'm responding to the question about color of the caulk, because we had a small gap on one end and I thought translucent would be a great idea, but our GC said it should be a color (gray in our case, to match the color of our stone). He said it would help "disguise" the gap more, and he's right. I don't notice it at all.

(We also have a similar size island as yours, with a subtle curve, and our fabricators matched the overhang all around. Our cabinet maker made a template for them and I'm sure that helped, because he was quite the perfectionist.)
