Frustrated! Tired of "fancy stoves won't make you a better cook"
Comments (29)This is all about "performance" -- range performance, car performance, cooking performance. This is also about status, fantasy and guilt. It also might be about property value. Some very famous cooks didn't have "high performance" equipment. And it's amazing how home cooks in other countries don't have all this fancy equipment and yet manage to turn out delicious meals. I've had wonderful food cooked in a fireplace and on a hot plate. If you can cook, a high performance range makes it easier and can give you more control and eliminate a struggle against a range (which is certainly annoying). If you can't cook well, and don't learn to season, no appliance will help....See MoreDuct work won't fit: Drop ceiling? Square Ductwork?
Comments (10)Thanks for helping me get this figured out. We are going to use 14 x 3-1/4 rectangular duct, which as you guys pointed out is the same area as 8 inch round. It's going to come across the ceiling and make a 90 degree turn (actually going to use 2 45s as fits easier and better air flow) so that it exits over the shorter window to the left that you see in the pictures above. It won't fit through the mess of existing plumbing that is between the two big windows and can't go over one of the bigger windows as they have exterior trim that extends 18" above the window. Glad I noticed that one! So, ceiling is going to drop to 9 feet, which puts it 3-1/2 or 4 inches above the top of the window molding, which is the same distance as all the upstairs windows in the house, so should look fine. I'm very relieved not to have the ceiling sitting right on the windows, seems like it would be claustrophobic. Now I'm just hoping that I'm still going to like the pendant lights I ordered with the lower ceiling. Luckily they are chain, so we can shorten them....See Moremicrowave over stove
Comments (6)According to a GE cooktop installation guide, they recommend a minimum 30" vertical clearance to combustible material and/or metal cabinets. They also state that if this isn't possible, a 24" clearance may be used if "the underside of the cabinets over the cooktop [is] protected with [no less] than a 1/4" insulating millboard, covered by sheet metal no less than 0.0122" thick."...See MoreDo you LIKE over the stove Microwaves??
Comments (29)I hated having it over the range. I even burned my breast once on the stove top once when taking out a casserole dish and placing it elsewhere (I'm very short). Please, do not ask how this is possible - it just IS. And of course, they barely can capture the grease and steam which comes off the stove top which others have mentioned, so the house smells awful after cooking certain foods, let alone the clean up involved and how hard it is to get into the MW itself to clean. So, in my new kitchen, it's going onto a shelf, in an area sort of dedicated to that and coffee area. There's a 27" cabinet above and below, with a landing area for the coffee pot and toaster oven below the microwave. I'll be able to store whatever is needed for coffee, tea and snacks there (there's a 9" thin upper cabinet to the right of it as well). It's on the opposite wall of my main cooking area, so it won't conflict with what I'm doing if anyone else wants to use it while I'm cooking, and near the refrigerator which has the water in the door for easy access for tea and coffee making....See Moretrixieinthegarden
