Granite is not what I templated

My life is total choas this month. I took a day off of work to go and template my granite a couple of weeks ago. Took pictures. So I have proof of what I wanted to go where in the kitchen.

Because Lowe's has done nothing but screw up my appliance order since March, my stove wasn't the one I ordered. Granite guys and contractor wanted to wait for final templating until the stove was in to make sure everything was perfect. When I finally got the one I ordered from Sears (thank you Sears!), the granite guys came out again and templated, when I wasn't home last Friday. I found out on Saturday that this was done and called and called the granite place to see if I needed to go out there and look at the templates again. No return call from the granite place until Monday.

On Monday, the granite place said not to worry, everything was the same as far as the measurements, etc., didn't need to go back out there. Yesterday, they installed the granite. I thought there was something different than the parts of the granite than I chose. However after putting in a 13 hour day at work, commuting over 100 miles, my brain was too foggy to compute.

This morning I compared the granite to my template. Not the same. It is the same slab but not the same parts of the stone that I wanted for my countertop.

I am very tired from an extremely stressful time at work (have to put in another 13 hour day--move my office tomorrow and work on Saturday, and start all over again on Monday--UGH!) I have the most beautiful black eye and I am doing nothing but public appearances and presentations in the evening. Oh joy! My house is in total disaster. The flooring guy left yesterday because of the granite guys coming in (they were to be here on Friday rather than yesterday). Now my flooring is behind two days. I am upset. I am very exhausted and frustrated. I am tired of my house being a mess. The workers left a corn cob on my garage floor and didn't flush the toilet yesterday. I have had it. I am close to rage, exhaustion and tears. What do I tell these folks? Do I pick out other slabs which are not as pretty as mine and start all over again, further delaying my kitchen?

This breaks my heart for you... that beautiful beautiful slab of granite. The entire slab was so beautiful. I'm certain that once you live with it you'll find the same beauty in the portions that you're looking at. Your fabricator should compensate you in some way.

Mustb, hugs from somewhere else in SoCal. Your whole slab is beautiful. Without seeing the "right" vs "wrong" parts of the slab, I would think that even the "wrong" parts would look a heckuva lot better than anything else you could find.

It may depend on whether you're doing an undermount sink installation or not. We are, and before they'll come and template, our fabricator told us to have the plywood layer on top with the hole for the sink cut out and the edge routed so that the sink sits in - flush with the top of the plywood. They also specified that there should be 1/4" of wiggle room. I don't know if this is typical or not. Good luck!

No way...I think you should do the copper. Sinks look SO different when they're undermounted under granite and I think it will look fantastic. I've seen copper prep sinks before and although eye-catching, I'm not sure why you'd want to buy a copper sink and have it go unnoticed. Go for it, there's a reason why you bought it in the first place! Do you think you're just getting last-minute jitters?

I am a fabricator. backsplash; some stones will not survive being cut down to a 2" wide piece; it will literally fall apart. Quartz and some stones are fine but regardless you'll probably have more backsplash seams with 2" material because 2" pieces are so fragile. "Negative reveal" = overhang. Reveal means some amount of the top flange of the sink is exposed. My shop does a very slight (1/16") overhang because it hides the caulk joint and eliminates the exposed rim that eventually gets beat up. The overhang generally goes from 1 - 1-1/2". More becomes an interference with drawer access and less than 1" makes it much more likely the joint between the countertop and cabinet is exposed. It's common for there to be a gap in some areas between the countertop and the cabinet. (cabinets usually aren't perfectly level and the backside of the granite is not perfectly flat.) The overhang masks the countertop/cabinet joint from casual observation. lots of ways to do "invisible" supports as per other posts. If they are as slight as some in the pics you might want the overhang rodded. Rodding is the process of embedding metal strips in the underside of the stone (like re-bar in concrete) so a big piece of stone doesn't go crashing to the floor in the event of a fracture. I am aware of 2 incidents where this happened; once when a teenage daughters football player boyfriend hopped up on to the counter and broke off the overhang. The other was a homeowner that came in with (2) 24 packs of beer and dropped them on to the counter.

"I am trying to figure out if fabricators need to allow extra for each piece for fitting, etc." That's the purpose of the template. An exact size facsimile of the desired countertop is created with luan strips, plastic strips, or a computer GPS. Now, the decorative edging chosen will impact whether a 60x 24" section of cabinet top with 3 exposed sides will need to be cut to 63", or 64" in length, or 25.5" or 26" in width. All of those variables are chosen and signed off during the template so that when the fabricator goes back to the shop, he has everything he needs and not have to do anything but cut something that fits.

Oh man that sucks, but I'm sure that your granite is beautiful anyway, but I would make a stink. I have been putting in days like that, too, and I know how hard it is to deal with anything else in your life not being perfect when work is so hard. My deep sympathies.

But I'm sure it is beautiful nonetheless.

You best said it yourself in the last sentence. "...Do I pick out other slabs which are not as pretty as mine and start all over again, further delaying my kitchen?" You live with what they did which is the colors you wanted or you go and get something else that won't be as pretty. I think you have the answer.
HOWEVER, you need to hold the fabricator and/or Lowe's accountable for what happened.
What you don't say is WHO put the template up onto the granite so you could photograph? The Lowe's employee? Or did the actual fabricator who was going to cut, polish and install the granite do it? If Lowe's did it...then that answers what went wrong. You go to Lowe's and discuss with the slab person what went wrong. They obviously didn't communicate a thing to the fabricator.
If the fabricator put the template up onto the slab and you photographed then you certainly have recourse to get in his face and demand explanation.
Not that I defend the fabricator all the time .... however, I have had the templates laid out for a client's granite and when the fabrication started the slab broke in a bad vein area, I have had the seams "blow out" and not match up right after that so another section was cut differently, etc. It could be there was a problem during fabrication.
Research a little before you react.

like tedebear, I was going to say maybe they had a problem during fabrication. I think with all you have going on in your life right now, I would just learn to appreciate the beauty of what they did install and move on. I would complain and maybe try to get a few bucks out of them, but I've learned one thing while building a house and that's that the things that seem horrendous at the moment fade in time. We put so much focus on details that it's hard to accept when they're not perfect, but trust me, you'll learn to live with and possibly even love what you got, regardless of whether it was necessarily what you wanted.

I should say, you'll learn to like or love it if you don't want to drive yourself crazy.
