Panicky in PA--good choice to remodel??
Comments (13)LOL, writersblock. Imfoodie, as long as you are putting away part of your income for retirement, don't feel guilty. Do save, and don't go overboard on the renovation, but get things you like. You bought the house you fell in love with, which is so important, and so renovating it - giving it the care it needs makes sense. If you know you'll be staying there for a while, get what YOU want, and don't listen to the Jonesers who tell you what you must have. I have a house I don't like very much. Bad start. DH bought it before we got married. I have to hope the reno will make me like the house more. You already love your house, and will love it more once it is the way you want it to be. Many days I have dark thoughts. I have a small galley kitchen and will never have an island, so why am I bothering? It won't look that much different than before. Am I overdoing it for this neighborhood? What if, what if, what if???? I can what if any decision to death, and then miss out totally. I know in this economy people think all of us are nuts to be spending money on houses. While it's important to be prudent and careful, you really do only go around once in life. I am constantly reminding DH of that. He never takes chances, never goes for much excitement - can be very staid. I'm there to light the fire and get things going - and he puts the brakes on when I get overboard. I also agree with the poster who said it will only get more expensive. That is true as we see oil creeping back up. Get your quartz countertops now - that resin isn't getting any less expensive!! My quote from two months ago has already increased, and inflation is supposedly going to eat us all alive shortly. So, if you need to do this, do it now. On positive days, I think, I deserve this. I have never ever gotten to take a kitchen or a bath and do what I wanted with it. I'm still putting most of the money away for retirement, and though I won't have what they predict I'll really need, I will still have more than most people my age. I'm 50 years old and deserve nicer appliances and cabinets. Even though my kitchen will never be the large open gathering place of magazine kitchens, it will be much more pleasant to work and be in there. And I remind myself that with my last house, I refinanced to make some improvements. Not a whole kitchen, but a little bit here and there in the whole house. I waited a long time, had loads of equity, and waited till I knew what I wanted. I'm convinced my improvements and elbow grease really helped my sale years later....See MoreHome Depot Kitchen Remodel ?
Comments (24)The project isn't as simple as it sounds. And labor is expensive anywhere and from anybody. (Run on sentence warning!) If that labor quote includes demo of the old cabinets, appliances, and plumbing, haul off of that as trash, removing the soffits and re-drywalling that area to match the existing ceiling and painting it, re-installing the plumbing and appliances, installing the cabinets with top and bottom molding and back panels and corbels etc. and hauling off all of the cabinet cardboard and packing, then the labor is somewhat high, but not nearly as high as you think for all of that work. If there is any electrical or plumbing changes or flooring demo, leveling, and new flooring install included, then the labor quote is probably low. You're paying for convenience. To get lower prices on the work, you're going to have to do some legwork and DIY. Break down the jobs. Figure out what you can do. Figure out what friends can do. Figure out where you could hire a pro separately (like for the plumbing reconnects, etc.). Figure out what you could do without now and still manage to do at a later time with no backtracking or loss of efficiency. Then decide if acting as your own GC is worth the headaches and time spent away from work dealing with things....See MoreCostco Kitchen Countertops VS Home Depot Countertops
Comments (42)Thanks so much for all of the information My biggest concern is that in as much as I am wheelchair bound I can't even take a countertop measurement myself and after 2 phone calls to Costco's " My Countertop " + 2 emails to their subcontractor in a month's time......I have given up on Costco and don't want to use a subcontractor who obviously has so little interest in doing a countertop for me I just want somebody in Suffolk/Nassau County who will do a good job installing my countertop. I am not looking to " nickel & dime " anyone on price but I don't want to get anyone who will " nickel & dime " me either. I would love to find somebody who will do the entire job well ( including removing & discarding old countertop & sink and installing new countertop & sink ) I would also like to find someone who is willing to come to my house...take professional measurements ...discuss my options to me....make suggestions if needed and show me various samples I don't think that's too much to ask and I hope that there is a good fabricator out there who could do it all for me which I will gladly pay for...See MoreHome Depot/Lowe’s kitchen cabinets?
Comments (11)A couple more thoughts about our kitchen renovation I posted pictures of above (it was a complete gut as we were working with an original 1915 kitchen that had a few horrible modifications. We got solid wood cherry cabinets (I believe they were Kraftmaid off the top of my head) including soft close, lazy Susan corner cabinet, but no slide outs. For all of the cabinets, the GE oven/range and microwave, the Kohler sink, the faucet, and the knobs and pulls...we paid about 4k total. Since budget was a concern for us and we were fine using "middle-end" brands, it was worth it for us to use Home Depot. We did order everything during a big sale and it was 7 years ago, but it was much less than estimates at some smaller local places we checked out, although it was probably for higher end products. And it was a lot less than my mom was able to get as well (she's a designer)....See Moreremodelfla
