low budget kitchen- IKEA or Home Depot or what?
Comments (28)When we priced the Ikea cabinets for her kitchen they where considerably more expensive than the Schrock ones and we did not have an Ikea close enough to go to see them in person. She wanted painted cabinets not thermofoil and schrock cabinets have wood drawers, dove tail construction. So for the $ they really are nice cabinets. Another line that is fairly inexpensive is Mid continent cabinets. The dealer in our area for the mid-continent is difficult to work with so we passed on them. Steph- the flooring is from lowes the allen + roth brand, pretty inexpensive and it is individual planks. It looks nice the planks had a foam backing attached to them. I have a vinyl plank flooring in my basement and I love it. I do daycare and it is very nice looking and cleans up easily. I would not hesitate to put the vinyl floor on cement....See MoreStonemark Granite kitchen Countertop from Home Depot
Comments (23)I have purchased Stonemark countertops from Home Depot and love the look, color, and feel of my countertops but my experience with our area installer has been very distressing. One section of the countertop has a 1/2 inch by 1 inch chip and another section has a scratch in the middle of the island under a direct light. The imperfections either were there when the granite was pulled from the truck or were incurred during installation. When I went to sign off on the installation I noted that I was unhappy with the chip and the installer said that they would not replace the piece. They only offered to refabricate. I had him refill the chip twice with different colors and it still looks awful. I can deal with the scratch being filled as it seems minor compared to the chip. It has been 9 business days and no one at Innovative Stone will return my phone calls. I have purchased $25K of cabinets, flooring, and countertops ($6K of Stonemark) for my kitchen remodeling project from Home Depot and it all has been a fairly good experience up until this install. Innovative Stone is not even responding to calls made from my Home Depot expeditor. I am in Ohio so it might just be my local installer but beware. I realize that a chip is not covered by warranty but how can they install a countertop with such a large chip and consider it a good business practice? Does anyone know how the refabrication process works? I am assuming that they will grind the stone where the chip is and feather it back into the edge of the piece. The chip is on the front of the countertop where it meets another piece of granite. I am concerned that if I agree to have them refabricate this piece it will look odd and then two pieces of the countertop are affected....See MoreHome Depot kitchen cabinets refacing, pricey?
Comments (21)@HU-694292508 I feel your pain. We ordered a cabinet refacing of our kitchen and upstairs bathrooms in mid-February. They were promised in 6-8 weeks. Nine weeks out they scheduled the install for the second week of May. Two days before then, they called to move it out two more weeks. We were getting our house ready to list and the cabinet refacing was the last (and biggest/most expensive) thing left to do. The installer came on the appointed day, did the kitchen installation but discovered that the bathroom materials were never ordered. He placed the order that day but the ETA was mid-July. I was SO mad. But I was very lucky. Our installer was a nice guy who gave me numbers of some higher-ups to call (so I overlooked the HUGE mess he and his crew made). I was very polite but firm to everyone I called. A regional installation manager arranged for a custom cabinet maker to make some temporary doors/drawer for our bathrooms so we could list our house. The installer also found that a pair of cabinet doors in the kitchen had been measured wrong. He had to trim one of them to get them installed. He took the measurements for those too. No one could give me an ETA of those doors. They were ordered on 5/19. Thursday 7/22 we closed on our house. Friday 7/23 in the middle of moving out I got a call from Home Depot Installations to schedule installation of that last pair of cabinet doors. HA! I left a note for the new owners. I am so glad to be done with Home Depot and I won't buy so much as a pack of yard bags from them again....See MoreLowe's vs. Home Depot vs. 3rd Party Kitchen design, cabinets, etc...?
Comments (8)I'd recommend you consider IKEA as well. I built an IKEA kitchen using the older Akrum system and it has held up well. Look at the Inspiration, brochure, and doors pages and you'll see that you can create a nice-looking kitchen. You can design the kitchen yourself, get help at the store, or use their design services. I think that your kitchen will come together faster -- important since you don't have one now -- and easier if you live within the constraints of pre-configured components rather than trying to meet preset demands (e.g., "must have 9' wall cabinets") which could require a custom products. Some compromise could have a big payoff....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
