Cabinet Hardware: Knobs or Pulls??
Comments (10)When we got to the knobs and pulls stage, we were also totally out to sea. Whoever thinks about which ones go where? First we determined that there were no actual "rules" on this subject, so we were left with freewheeling it. We eventually decided on knobs for the uppers and pulls for the lowers. We have a pantry with 4 doors (2 up, 2 down) and a utility closet with a long cabinet above and 2 drawers below. We finally went with knobs only for the 4 pantry doors, and a pull for long, narrow utility cupboard door. After we'd ordered the hardware and were ready to install, I think we changed our minds on a couple of those, but that's how they ended up. FYI - pulls are a pain to put on, knobs are easy. The knobs and pulls thing is really individual. Sometimes your particular cabinetry style lends itself better to one than the other. You see this most in ultra-modern cabinets that look great with long pulls on everything. Retro-look cabs might do better with cup pulls, but pretty much you can do what you want. My one real piece of advice is go to a store and touch and feel. Some hardware will feel "just right" in use and other things just won't. Is the back side of the pull or knob scratchy? Do the square corners poke you or turn in your hand? Are they too big or too little for your hand? Are the pulls too close to the cabinet so you bump your knuckles every time you use it, or so far away that you bang your hip on it in passing? Things to think about before you invest....See MoreCabinet Pulls - Do you mix sizes and styles?
Comments (11)Definitely personal preference. In our case, we used the same size pulls on all drawers (4"). We used one pull on drawers = 30". We have 18", 24", 27", 30", 31", 31.5", 33", and 36" drawers and, like you, the vast majority of our bases are drawer bases. The only exceptions are the sink bases and the 6" pullouts flanking the cooktop. Cup pulls vs "regular" pulls...originally I wanted cup pulls, but then when we realized that to open the bottom drawers you have to reach under to get your hand in the pull that it would be more difficult than just reaching down from the top, we went w/the "regular". In the end, I'm glad we did as I like our pulls better than the cup pulls for our cabinets & kitchen style. The issue of being able to fit my DH's bigger hands was a concern for us as well when we were considering the cup pulls; since you're also concerned, I'd buy a couple of the larger pulls and try them out. We bought several different pulls & knobs and tried them on our old cabinets to get a feel for what they would be like using them as well as to get a general idea of what they would look like. 24" Drawer, 1 pull/drawer: 27" Drawer, 1 pull/drawer: 33" Drawer, 2 pulls/drawer and 18" Drawer, 1 pull/drawer & trash pullout: 36" Drawer, 2 pulls/drawer:...See MoreAdvice on cabinet hardware - pulls or knobs on doors?
Comments (4)i like the cup pulls with the knobs....the cup pulls seem modern/streamline and the pulls seem more industrial which to me does not go together. the cup pulls and knobs would look great together, IMHO and i like the mixing of shapes i would do the island in the same graphite finish, not the satin nickel.......See MoreFinger pulls vs knobs vs bar pulls, mixing weathered and satin nickel
Comments (2)Hello Lisa MacDonald, i don't think the Weathered Nickel would look bad. I like the leaf design on the front it looks very similar to Century Hardware'sHamilton collection. I think that maybe you should pair a mushroom knob with that cup pull. Adding more pictures would probably help everyone get a better idea of the space and what you are trying to do in your kitchen. Best wishes!...See Moredoonie
