Has anyone used Wilsonart Solid Surface? Opinions?

Hi all,

I'm having custom cabinets made for my kitchen, and I've decided I want a solid surface countertop to go with them. (I know, it isn't popular on this forum, but it's what I want...) My cabinet maker says he also does solid surface countertops, and the brand he uses is Wilsonart. I hadn't heard of a solid surface by them, just laminate. The cabinet guy is really talented, and I'd love to have him do the counters, too - but I'm having trouble finding much information about this product that isn't coming from their website. Any thoughts? It seems it used to go by the brand name "Gibraltar".

If you have decided that an acrylic solid surface counter is what you want Wilsonart Solid Surface should be fine. All of the major brands (Corian, Wilsonart, Hi-Macs, Starron et) of solid surfacing are pretty much identical in terms of wear and durability. I tell my clients to choose the color/pattern they like best and not worry about the brand. In your case you are making the brand decision based on the fabricator, a perfectly reasonable way to choose. Let him fabricate and install the counters and enjoy your new kitchen.

Wow! I'm blushing at all the compliments! So, of the links that zmith posted, I'd say mine is more like the mystique sharp curve, but it is definitely the eased edge as posted in iowacommute's link. I don't know if the terminology is different in Canada than the US, but it is definitely more square than round, and I am fairly sure the guy that made them had the laminate sheets and put it on the substrate himself. I gave my contractor the big 5x7 sample I had and he took it to his countertop guy. It might be called a D-wrap, but I think the D-wrap was more round, whereas mine is more square,but rounded off. It is 3.5cm, measured in cms, not converted from inches. I actually picked the pattern out at Lowes Canada and asked them about the various edge samples they had in the kitchen department and I'm pretty sure that's where I got the "eased edge" name from.

Thanks, Joseph. Could I use Corian without a built up edge? I think I mentioned my cabinets are frameless, if that makes any difference. Is there any difference in solid surface brand prices? The kitchen designer I visited yesterday uses a distributor/fabricator that can get any brand, but she only wanted to show me Corian.

Klw402, sorry to say we never did find anything out and decided to go a totally different route with our flooring. We ended up with Cali flooring strand woven solid bamboo flooring and are extremely pleased with it. (And porcelain tile in our bathrooms.)
