Wilsonart Thinscape countertops or solid surface?

Hello, does anyone have experience with Wilsonart Thinscape countertops? I’m remodeling my kitchen in a modern style and am very interested in the thin look of these countertops, but haven’t been able to find much information online.

I’m also interested in solid surface. Is there much difference in price between the different brands? And is there a way to get the thinner countertop look with solid surface?

My area favors very traditional style homes, so it’s hard for me to find information locally about more modern kitchen styles/materials.

Traditional solid surfaces like Corian are manufactured in 1/2" thickness and can be installed that way. The edges can be built up to any thickness you please.

Thanks, Joseph. Could I use Corian without a built up edge? I think I mentioned my cabinets are frameless, if that makes any difference.

Is there any difference in solid surface brand prices? The kitchen designer I visited yesterday uses a distributor/fabricator that can get any brand, but she only wanted to show me Corian.

Thanks for the tips! I have been reading up on the threads regarding solid surface counters and also checked out the finished kitchens board. Regarding my new kitchen, I will have a stainless steel undermount sink. Cabinets will be rustic pecan from Dynasty Omega. Hardwood floors in a medium to dark finish. Island countertop will be butcher block. I will not be installing granite as it is too expensive. (We are a couple of hundred miles from the nearest granite yard so mileage and time for templating and installation will kill us before the price of the granite is even considered.) That is why I am going with solid surface. I prefer a matte finish rather than shiny and am leaning toward darker, earthtone colors with a stone look. I know about the issues with the heat but have never had anyone in our household set a hot pot on the old yellow/gold laminate counter so I don't anticipate that as a problem. (My KD says you can't use griddles or the George Forman type of grills on solid surface without a trivet or hot pad underneath. Anyone have experience with this?)

I think that is universal, as I know of no state that is willing to spend millions of dollars a year to test thousands of unique appliances in order to come up with their own rules. (I prefer to use the relevant example) ;D " What I'm understanding is that installation instructions are designed to meet building code." - yes, but many of the installation instructions seem to be worded by lawyers, and designed to be decieving to the average consumer. "Listing" is what happens after the independent testing laboratory makes sure the product's clearances label and installation instructions meet the ANSI standards and put that "UL sticker" (label) on it. - the whole code process works together with the "listed and labeled" requirement and ANSI safety standards. . I was told that Corian was more expensive; however, in my neighborhood labor is the driving factor and all the prices came out within $10 of each other. Knowing what I know now, the only thing that I would do differently is to purchase a Corian that does not have a grain to it (I have witch hazel). When there is no grain there are no problems if you need a repair and the seams don't show. No repairs needed yet. So far it has been completely trouble-free and so much quieter, warmer and easier to maintain than the dark granite that I have on either side of the stove. I bought used kitchen cabinets and those cabinets surrounding the stove came with their granite intact. If your stove is on a different wall, I would consider a different surface by the stove as other people (darling husband for instance) have a tendency to pull hot pans right off the stove on to the countertop by the stove and I understand that Corian (all quartz and some granites) do(es) not hold up to heat. I would absolutely install Corian again.

@susie honestly the layout is doing to have to stay as is. without removing some walls the layout is as good as its going to get. the big issue is the fridge as there is no good place to put it. I have out a rough sketch of the layout (the fridge i have is 32 inches wide, but i have a hard time capturing it on paper the start and stop areas are about right). i have attached some photos as well so you have a better sense…its a mess, it won’t tidy again until my 3 year old goes to bed. I did ralk to the contractor about moving over the stove and microwave by 9-10 inches so a narrow cabinet could go between stove and the doorway. And then i asked for a cabinet over the fridge to store the crap that gets shoved up there (its stuff i need out of reach of little hands). i also feel i dont need extra cabinet space, but i need the space to be more functional. I have empty space in the lower cabinets because either things dont fit, are not accessible, or i want them away from little hands. But, my uppers are full.

You can use any 1/2" solid surface without a built-up edge. Corian is the premium priced product. Their patent ran out long ago; you can get generic "Corian" at a lower price.

Wilsonart Thinscape is sold at The Home Depot. It is excellent in Heat Resistance, Stain Resistance and Impact Resistance.

Since you work for Home Depot I'm hoping you can tell me if Home Depot can order a 60" x 40" piece for me? It would need to be finished (polished??) on all four sides as I'm using it as a tabletop. Looking for the Spanish Limestone color. Thanks!

The price for the ThinScape includes technicians coming out with a laser to create the perfect template for them to fabricate and install. We do not offer it as a Furnish and Deliver Product. Only Furnished and installed. Visit your closest Home Depot for more options.
