Comments (23)Diana A final word: A House is not a Home. That is a Rule of English, not a statement of sentiment. House is a verb, home is a noun. House and Home are Not Synonymous. "The Dept of Houseland Security warns of an attack on American House." "He went house." "House" is an Action taken upon a diverse collection of organic and inorganic materials to provide shelter, home, kennel, stable, nest for a resident thereof. It is structure, structuring of home. In a horticultural sense, "Soil" is an Action taken up the diverse collection of materials both organic and inorganic. It is structure, structuring of dirt. Soil is the verb. Dirt is the noun. Soil and Dirt are Not Synonymous. That is the simplest explanation as all English words must follow the Rules. You may say anything you like but know the rules. I use "stuff" (verb) as a noun as in "my stuff" or "that stuff" but a competent editor would never allow and, to my knowledge, never has allowed "stuff (noun)" to be published except as quote or dialect. However I will add: Murdering the Queen' English is the National Sport and favorite pastime of the Brit's while Americans, myself included, are hell-bent on proving that Warren G. Harding was not the only one who could write a simple declarative sentence with seven grammatical errors. Comments (0)from the bath fan to the outside? We are converting a bedroom into a master bath ... size is 10x11. The room is at the north corner of the house on the ground floor. We live in NW Arkansas. The house is a 60's ranch with a full basement. 8' interior walls, 2x4 construction, brick veneer, hip roof, 18" soffits ... we have soffit vents and a ridge cap vent to vent the attic. We are putting in a 150 CFM bath fan on a timer switch. I'd like to duct it to the soffit about 6' away. That OK? If so: 1) should we use insulated flexible duct?, 2) do we need a backdraft damper?, 3) any suggestions on what kind or brand of termination hood to use at the soffit?. Thanks in advance....See MoreShould I extend this soffit? What looks best?
Comments (24)Ok, after dealing with another problem this past week, now I am down to the wire on this decision. I need to tell them Monday morning what to do! To recap, the soffit over the sink on the left side is required since it is hiding a beam. I cannot change the cabinets at this point. Just trying to make the range wall look better. While I love the look of open shelving, it is not practical for us. So, my options are: Mini soffits Medium soffits that extend to each side One long one No Soffits on the range wall Here is the space: Mini Soffit example: Medium soffits: One soffit: What does everyone think? Comments (9)Chris - DAWN won't damage your bricks. Plain water would probably be fine. You do have to wait a couple of days (an no rain should be forecast) for the bricks to be dry - before applying any sealer. But no big deal. Follow the directions. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202529383/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 The above product works fine. They also make a 'no gloss' version which does the exact same thing - but is invisible and does not affect the look or appearance of the bricks; in any manner. Again, you would have to follow the directions. Several other reputable companies make similar products. Get thee to a Hardware store, and look around at the products. You can call and talk to Sika if you want (in NJ) at: 201 933 8800 Just take a look around at your Hardware Store. Pick up a how-to book on Concrete and Masonry work for $20. Again, not hard at all, and good luck. It is not even hard for a home owner to learn how to make some quick (grout) tuck point repairs. (You do need a small (like 4") grinder for that/ plus a DUST mask or Respirator /eye & hearing protection/ are all MANDATORY if you care about your health...) These items don't cost much. And hearing and eye should both be worn when just mowing your lawn for example... D. Here is a link that might be useful: Concrete Sealer...See Moreclarygrace
