Anyone have an installer scratch your new sink during install?

Our guys that did our recent kitchen were overall very good, they did nice, careful work, did a great zero reveal for the sink, BUT they did scratch my brand new Julien sink, a scratch that goes opposite the grain, an up and down scratch toward the right hand upper side in a very visible place. It's a little disapppointing and I am trying to figure out how I should handle the situation because on the one hand I am thrilled with my new sink and I am so happy just to have running water once again in my kitchen after being without it for two months but on the other hand it is disappointing to see the scratch. I told the kitchen guy in charge that I am disappointed and kindly asked him if he could look into having it repaired. I am waiting to hear back from him. Has this happened to anyone else out there and if so was it able to be reapired and with what? I'd sure appreciate any imput you may have.

Not a sink scratch, but the electrican my GC used scratched the handle on my double ovens. Rather than replace it, they elected to repair it using various grits of sandpaper (and I believe some type of oil as well). When they were done it was almost invisable, though from the amount of effort it took, I'm sure the are much more careful from now on. The handle finish was brushed which also helped--not sure if it would've worked on a smooth finish; though I do recall they made it smooth to get the scratch out and then had to put a new brushed finish on it. YOur installers probably figured a sink is one of those items that is bound to get scatched anyway, but I am sure you wanted to be the one to put in the first scratch.

Not a scratch, but the countertop installer dripped something (I called it "goop" -- my technical term!) on the front of our stainless apron-front sink and I was pretty upset. Nothing could remove it, so the fabricator hired someone to come and buff the front of our sink and honestly, it looks as good as new!

Just like valinsv intimated, it is ultimately their responsibility to repair it (unless it's stated in your contract with them that they are to be liable for nothing ???). Stand firm!

OK, NEW PROBLEM. I don't know why I did not mention this before. Every time we touch the countertops the oil from our hands turns the countertop dark and it will not go away with just soap and water. It will only go away with "Rejuvenate" Kitchen & Bath Countertop Polish. My husband talked to 3 different people at HomeDepot who said that there is something very wrong with the Silestone product if it does that! It must have happened at the factory & was sold as "Seconds". They said the contractor must have purchased the product knowing this & should have told us before selling it to us!!! Some people don't mind this and will purchase it anyway, but must be informed in advance. Have any of you ever heard of this or had experince with this before? I am so frustrated, I don't know what to do. They are installing the backsplash as I type this. It looks OK so far. Wish me luck with it.

We installed one ourselves and love it. There are many different brands and sizes - we went with an Imperium from this place: http://www.centralvacuumstores.com/ They were extremely friendly and helpful. I think that we spent about $700 or so. They sell some adaptors so you can use regular sized PVC pipes in the walls - we bought that at HD instead of having the pig pipes shipped. If you have your walls open, it's very easy to install. We have the wall inlets that you plug the hose into for most of the house and also a sweeper pan like you mention above in the kitchen. We have only hardwood floors and a few rugs in the house - and lots of dogs, so lots of dog hair. Supposedly, central vacs last much longer than a regular vac, making it comparable over the long term. Ours has only been installed for a few years - I guess we will see how it holds up.

I can't imagine fixing that permanently; that's the problem with cast iron, the color doesn't go all the way through. Pop the cabinet front off and replace the sink; half a day job. Use a Pete's Sink Mount Kit please. I'd get rid of the pencil edge at the sink while you're at it; it's a chip factory. "So, do I ask the contractor to pay for replacing the whole sink?" Yes. "Do I just accept this as normal course of a remodel and buy some kind of white material to cover it up again and we live with this damaged sink?" The cast iron will begin to rust without the enamel: You can try this, but I'm betting that's what popped out.

First, let me say that your contractor is being reasonable. He has offered you a few options that are fair to both of you. Here's what I would do: Invite the girlfriend you go clothes shopping with (the one who will really tell you that the dress doesn't look good on you) to come over and show off the new powder room to her. If she doesn't say anything about the damage to the wallpaper, maybe it's not as noticeable as you think it is. If she thinks it's a problem (and you already do, too) then you have to pick new wallpaper or a new wallpaper hanger. The level of wallpaper hanger you will need to get if you do the same paper will cost you more than the original contractor, because they will be a higher skill level. Also, they will have to work around the completed fixtures, so that will an additional charge too. It really just depends on how much you love that paper.
