quarter round base molding

My kitchen is almost finished. The cabinets are mushroom colored. Because of the uneven floor the matching toe kick needs a quarter round base molding. I was thinking of matching this molding to the floor color rather than the light mushroom color since it might show less dirt over time. Good or bad idea?

i would match to the cabs - i think it might look funny if the floor color rides up.

We have an odd hall where DH replaced white painted quarter round with stained oak to match floor after we removed carpet. Baseboard is painted white and walls are white. Have never liked the new unpainted quarter round. (DH likes it I guess.)

like floorguy said, use 22.5 degree angle cuts and use 2 pieces, each with 22.5 degree angle cuts on each end, while also cutting 22.5 degree angles on the main wall piece ends. you have to start your angle back far enough on your main wall pieces to just cover the corner, however, as you will need to cope out the corner radius from the back of the quarter-round material, it might not look right in relation to the rest of the quarter round installed (depending on the degree of the rounded corner radius. If this is an issue for you, you can add another piece and make a 3-piece corner using 11.25 degree angle cuts on all pieces.

Covering Up An Unused Doorway

Thanks for your input Starfish. Actually, the existing doorway I'm covering up is a 3' wide opening so I can't put 7' of doors in it. I don't want to remove any existing mouldings simply because they always seem to end up lost when you decide you want to put them back on. Best place for the original trim is right where it's at on the wall. I also can't do a transom type look because I need the screen of doors to be at the same height as the existing doorway. I need a screen 7' wide so that it cover's up the doorway AND is the width of my sofa so will make the wall looked balanced. As it is right now...the doorway is behind my sofa and the edge of the sofa lines up with the edge of the doortrim. So, I have the 3' wide door plus 4' of wall that I need to cover up for a total of 7'...the width of the sofa.

Yes the flooring guys put in the new floor. I told them I didn’t want the quarter round, when I showed up they installed it and said “it looked good so they just finished it up and thought I’d like it” - we agreed they would show me a sample before installing it - I had told them I wanted a very tiny square edge piece, and instead when I arrived at our appointed time, apparently they got there early and installed all of it!! So I had them take it out. I hired and paid a carpenter to put the new molding on top of the old toe kick. He used 1/2” but it didn’t cover it on that one side (the most visible side). Now I don’t know what to do! :-(

We have oak quarter round against our white baseboards. The oak is stained to match the floor. Honestly, I don't even see the quarter round. It disappears into the floor to my eyes.

Oh, from images of shoe molding, I guess that's what we have: taller than it is deep.

We have both in our house. The painted ones look worse over time as they get dinged by the vacuum, etc.

Thank you for all the input. I decided to match the cabinets. I have a peninsula that has beadboard on the back side and I thought it would look funny with a brown molding since it is so visible on that side. I also asked for something higher than the (I was told by the contractor) 3/4 round.

Any base molding should always match the rest of the molding in order to achieve the proper look. The previous owner had all of the 1/4 round stained the same as the floors. I'm ripping that out this summer and putting in proper shoe molding painted the same as the rest of the trim. This way you get the proper profile.
