That sounds wonderful! If you have the room it's a great solution. The reason double sinks don't work for most kitchens is when you divide a standard sink you can't get a cookie sheet or roaster all the way in the big sink and have to wash half at a time. Then you can't hide stuff either. It's also harder to keep the prep side clean when there's never enough room in the larger side.

I have a double sink with a larger side though not as large as you describe and I love it. I recently spent a week in a nice vacation rental with a large farm sink - one bowl. That just doesn't work for me. I like a totally separate bowl. It may work well if you have a separate prep sink but I didn't want two separate sinks I just wanted two separate bowls. The only thing I think you might need to be aware of is whether or not the giant sink is the right scale for the rest of your kitchen. I have a neighbor who has two very large bowls next to each other. She's a grocer and caterer so I'm sure big sink is very important to her. I thought her sink looked gargantuan - probably because it was and I just wasn't used to it.

I have struggled with the 1 bowl / 2 bowl issue for a long time. I honestly do not understand how you use a 1 bowl sink. It never fails that I have something in the sink defrosting, or washing pots in the sink, and then I have a glass full of juice that needs to be emptied before being put in the dishwasher. What's a girl to do? Do I wait until the sink is emptied? I have never lived with a 1 bowl, so I'm sure there is a solution, but I just haven't seen the advantage. I know it would be FABULOUS to fit a cookie sheet or roaster fully into the sink, but I have a 2 bowl that has a super deep (bowl depth), 22" square bowl that mostly fits the large items. Perhaps those that have 1 bowl sinks also have a prep sink that they can use for hand washing or cup emptying??

I've got a triple! The interior dimensions of the left (washing) side are 18x14 which is big enough for me and 9 7/8 inches deep.
When I really thought about it, it just fits how I work in the kitchen. I don't have a prep sink, so having the easy access to the center bowl where I can wash, rinse, scrape a dish etc without getting on either clean or dirty dishes was a plus.
Also I know that some people really don't hand wash, but I've always got something draining on the rack in the third compartment.... wooden spoons, a cup that I just used to measure water, my bread machine insert, a thermometer..... I need a draining area and didn't want a rack on the counter.
Different strokes! and aren't we lucky that there are so many choices so that we can all get what suits us??! :)

I had a 40" soapstone sink in last house and always wished for another bowl....10" would have been great.

Sounds great. I love my double bowl sink for all of the reasons stated, but I've often wished the large side was a bit larger. Mine is only 33'' wide total. The only thing I wish the big side was wider for is washing cookie sheets and my cooktop grates. I didn't want to lose too much "other" cabinet space by making my sink cabinet larger though, so I went with the 33'' size. I always have a sink drainer in the small side. Love it.

Sabjimata: I'm pretty sure 60/40 refers to ratio not inches. You really have five feet of sink coming?????

Do NOT feel bad about preferring a double-bowl sink...we're all different and have different preferences...usually based on how we each use our kitchen & sinks!

We have both a single-bowl prep sink (Kohler, 15-3/4" square) in a 36" corner sink base and a double-bowl cleanup sink (Ticor S405D, large bowl 21-1/2" wide, small bowl 10-1/2" wide) in a standard 36" sink base.

The only sink I wish were a little bigger is the prep sink. The cleanup sink's large bowl fits all our cookie sheets, largest pans (including handles), refrigerator shelves & bins (except the 30"+ deli drawer), etc. I prep at the prep sink, others (kids) prep at the cleanup sink, if needed, and DH & kids cleanup at the cleanup sink...all of which often go on at one time...this setup works great for us.

A large bowl of 24" to 30" wide sounds great! Many of those here with single-bowl sinks have just one bowl of that size. You have the best of both worlds...large large bowl & decent sized small bowl.

BTW...those with single-bowls often use a dish pan to make their sink work as a double-bowl. That's OK if they want to keep it out all the time or have room to store it between uses, but neither applied to us, so we got the double-bowl.

I don't understand the single bowl love either. I have the Ticor 504d. I scrape and rinse my dishes into the disposal on the small side and wash in the big side. When I have a lot of dishes it is much easier to keep up with things if I keep a sink of soapy water going. With a single bowl, I don't see you you can rinse your dishes, use the disposal or drain cooked foods if you have a sink fill of water or dirty dishes. My biggest cookie sheet does not fit flat into the sink but I don't think it's that difficult to wash one side, flip it over and wash the other. To each his own. Do what works for you. :)

Yes, our sink will be 25" x 60" x 9 & 3/4" and it arrives today. Crated, it weighs 660 lbs. YIKES.

The whole kitchen is designed with this sink in mind. It was my must have item. And I am thrilled!

I say go for it. I am one that misses having a double or second sink. When you do a lot of fresh veggies it is so nice to have a clean sink for washing them. (maybe I just don't like change?)

Wow, what a great bunch of feedback from everyone. I really thought that I was missing a point on the single sink idea. I guess it's really just key that you have both bowls large enough to accomodate your needs for each... i.e. large basin big enough to soak large pans, small basin big enough to really use as prep sink or dish drainer.

Now I'm gonna call the local soapstone guy here and see if he'll make a sink to my specs. Haven't visited him since 2001 when I first started thinking about a new kitchen! We've been busy renovating other parts of our 1895 house instead, and finally am getting on to the best but most angst producing part... the entire first floor including the kitchen.

Single bowl sinks work best if you have a prep sink located elsewhere or you use the DW for 99% of your dish washing needs. Sink cabinets are space wasters for utility in kitchen design. You've got all of that plumbing underneath and then the space leftover is awkward and hard to utilize efficiently. That's why many people who do 33" sinks cram them into 33" bases instead of teh 36" base the manufacturers call for. That extra 3" can be added to a drawer stack for more useful space.

There's nothing inherently "wrong" about having a supersized double sink---IF you have a large enough kitchen to support the space and you aren't skimping on cabinets elsewhere that would be more useful. The sink is the hardest working appliance in a kitchen, so getting that right for you is really important!

I can't decide between a double and a triple basin (we have triple now).

The triple takes a lot of room but is functional. Has anyone gone from triple to double? this will give me more counter space.

If you're having a sink custom fabricated, you can pretty much do whatever you want. That being said, the only word of caution that I'd throw out there is, if you're doing soapstone, bear in mind that the divider between the two basins will be subject to getting dinged when washing range grates and over-sized pans. Soapstone is soft, so you'll probably want to avoid squared edges along the top of the basin divider, or it will quickly show wear and tear. No matter how careful you are, it will be impossible to always avoid anything banging into the divider. You'll very quickly end up with some chipping along its top edge.

I find a double bowl sink very handy for the reasons others have listed above. (Pots soaking in suds in the sink, and it's time to drain the pasta -- what am I supposed to do, use the bathroom sink?) If I had a prep sink that would be different, but I don't. In many ways, the second bowl of a double sink functions as your prep sink.

I think your plans makes lots of sense.

Although there is definitely a bias against double bowl sinks on the GW, there is a subgroup that loves them and knows how to work with them.

I've ordered a full double sink and a full sized single sink. They will face one another across the kitchen. The large single sink should accommodate many large items that don't fit the double sink, esp. the dehydrator trays which we now carry to the basement to scrub. Don't know if I'm going to like this sink configuration once it's installed, but it should allow 2 cooks (and an auto repair guy and two veg gardeners and a messy cook and a flower arranger and the dog bucket and a manic dinner party giver) to work together and keep the action flowing.

Not only that, but I confess to using a plastic dishpan within my current double sink. It protects the sink and the dishes and allows me to pull it up to access the drain if I need to (such as when I have something greasy to rinse off and there are clean items in the second bowl already). I also know that the dishpan is always clean, not to be used to hold garage rinse-offs, compost, etc. A household policy. I also use a divider protector to prevent clunking of dishes on it. Don't know if I will still do this, but I suspect I will. I buy white ones, occasionally boil them in bleach water to keep them clean. Or run them through the dishwasher. Also, I use a basin or a container to hold rinse water as often as possible. Why waste that water? Rinse responsibly!

I agree with so much that has been said about double sinks here. Many of us just can't imagine how to cope if there's not a place to access a drain quickly in the heat of battle and when there's a need for a clean sink RIGHT NOW! Many people say that you can put a container within a mega-single-bowl sink to hold water for washing, but when somebody's dumped a lot of oily slop from salad plates into the drain area, what do you do when you need to plunk another item into the sink and keep it from getting that slop on it? You end up grabbing a second or third container to accommodate that piece anyway!

Remember: it's best not to plan a kitchen for the unusual and rare moment but for the usual day-to-day. You can always take that turkey roaster to the basement laundry tub to soak after a holiday meal. Millions have done it for years and years.

I have to say that I handwash very few things. I rarely intentionally soak anything but the big pans destined for the dw often do rest in the sink catching water until they get shoved in my dw. But there are so many things that have residual water in indentations that need to be flipped over and air dried after the dw. Plus the prep sink issues discussed above. Those things are always in the dishrack that I'm wanting to hide.

I think I feel like I should go ahead with my plan for a large double... I've read so much on this issue and realize that I'll still be me with my own habits even after the remodel.

As far as the issue about having such a large sink in my kitchen, we are adding on some length to the kitchen and will have one long work wall that houses the sink and 48 inch range. The sink will be where it is now, under a double hung window that (including the casing) is about 43 inches wide. I figure a wide soapstone sink under it will look proportionate. Under the sink might be storage for rarely used large stockpots and maybe a pullout for some of our recycling, making the best out of an awkward space. Not sure about whether or not I'll have a disposal.

You all are right about sharing the sink with other users... my girls (who aren't that little anymore!) still love to play in the mud outside and make cakes. Well last week they came in to wash that super stinky mud off, right on top of the colandar that was just about to receive some cooked potatoes. Glad I caught that out of the corner of my eye before I served my family mud-laced mashed potatoes!

We're going with a double sink but a low divide by Ticor (S1210). I have a double sink (small/large bowl configuration) that is nice but I often found I needed equal size bowls, which this allows.

I also looked at the Kohler cast iron Smart Divide lines, too, but decided I wanted SS.

I struggled with the same decision, and we went with the below huge double bowl apron front sink. We also have a prep sink in the island. We love it. We use all the sinks. I worried that the double sink would be too big, but it isn't in our space since the kitchen is fairly large. I almost wish it were bigger! Good luck!

Just a note that a grid will also provide protection for the bottom of the sink, lift items up off the bottom of the sink for ease of sink rinsing, using the entire sink w/o blocking the drain, preventing a backwash of water into a colander when draining pasta (or potatoes), etc. A grid isn't a "cure-all", but I have found it's very useful!

My last house had a single  no problem cleaning what ever I wanted. This house has a 48" triple and I *hate* it because I cannot get my pans and cutting boards in there flat.

Like many have stated  to each their own. For me, first priority would be to lay my pans and boards flat for cleaning. IÂve not seen any double where this is possible  but I suppose if you are having a custom sink made it would be possible.

With only room for one sink, I'm putting in a 60/40. When I first was reading on this forum I was nearly convinced that a single was a great idea. Then came reality - my reality, that is - and double it is. All the talk about cookie sheets sure didn't sway me. It's so easy to wash one side then the other. Cooktop grates go into the dishwasher. My habit is to get everything dirty into the DW right away - with scaping, but little or no rinsing.

I struggled with the single sink delimma also. I've always had a double sink and never felt like I was missing anything so I decided to go with a double again since I also use both sides of my sink. I love the look of a deep single sink but I really think I would miss having the other bowl for draining pasta prepping fruit and veggies and drying those items I can't put in my dishwasher. I also don't have room for a prep sink.

gobruno--I love that sink. I have the large single bowl like that one and if I had it to do over--I would have chosen the one you posted. My large sink is frankly too large when I want to hand wash a few dishes.

I love that two sided Rohl. I looked at the specs. I think the 24" large side with the small side on the other side is perfect. I don't remember that sink being available four years ago when I was building my house.
