Howards Restore-A-Finish - what color should i go with??
Comments (9)gracie - i'm going to leak out my secret early.. i'm picking up the chair tonight!!!! :) :) almost embarrassed to mention that now since i made such a deal about this or that, not both. the vehicle repairs etc ended up not being near as much as we had anticipated. My b-day is coming up ... and DH was in a really good mood last night. He was just like,"why don't you see if they still have that chair you're drooling over and go get it" yay! I'm surprised it's not gone! so mahogany......See Morekitchen cabinets need refinishing
Comments (2)I have 23 year old oak kitchen cabinets and like yours, have no knobs or pulls. They were in very bad shape. I removed the doors and sanded them down as well as the bases. After sanding, I stained them and applied a coat (2) of polyurathane. They look like brand new and everyone thought we had replaced our cabinets!...See MoreRestoring the finish on an oak bathroom vanity
Comments (12)Sorry for reviving a 5 year old thread and for hijacking it too... thought it would be better etiquette than starting a new thread on the same topic since I need advice for a similar issue. I've been very neglectful and careless with the oak vanity in my bathroom. The finish on the doors and panels that get water dripped on them is now almost completely off in some spots and the bare wood is exposed. I don't have time to DIY restore them nor do I have the funds to get them professionally restored (gotta pay for then pay off my upcoming kitchen reno first). Is there anything I can apply to protect the wood until I can restore it? This likely won't happen for several years. I've used a homemade beeswax & olive oil wood "polish" to restore wooden items like utensils and bowls. Would it be OK to use that on the vanity? I've done some reading up on how to care for wood floors and I know waxes are a no no, if I ever want to refinish the floors so I'm guessing the same applies to wood vanities....See MoreHow to get from boring oak to "cerused oak" finish for cabinets?
Comments (33)cor, I don't even know what you did here. the wood needs to be complete stripped bare. you need to keep the grain open when applying the dye/and the liming wax. did you dilute your shellac 50/50 w/denatured alcohol? did you read the link w/all the directions? yes,,you had a major fail. this was a good oak piece that would have taken a nice ceruse, if done correctly. I said it was an insane amount of work. no shortcuts can be done w/this. now you know. this is raw oak. not a stitch of stain or color on it. I left the grain a little raised for better absorption. this is how that table should look before you even start those doors should be taken off to work on and that whole piece should be somewhere where you can strip and sand it. did I mention it takes hours and hours? you can't just sand off half the stain, put on new stain, shellac and liming wax! doesn't work that way....See Moresail_away
