Can't decide which is best....will you vote??

Hi again!

Thanks for all the great posts and the info so far. Everyone has been so helpful. It has taken me awhile, but I used excel to make some possible layouts using your advice. Here are 3 layouts. The first is basically what chefkev suggested but repositioning the fridge so the island isn't such a barrier. The next two are using bmorepanic's layout suggestion. Please let me know what you think. I listed pros and cons on each layout, so obviously none of them are perfect. I would like to know what you would choose! Also, help me decide if I should get two ovens with a large family or just go with a range to save cabinet space. More pantry or more oven? I know I have to compromise, but I don't know what to choose. What do you think??? Thanks for all your help again...I really appreciate your input. Am I getting any closer or am I still not there??

Well Ta Daaaaaaaaaa!!! Last Snowflake wins by a landslide. I figured it would since it just has to be my most favorite in the garden. Thanks for your votes, this was fun. Last Snowflake has to be my favorite Stamile daylily so far. I love all the early blooming daylilies and the eyed ones, but somehow this one just tugs at my heartstrings. If you don't have it, get it, it will not let you down. Ann had to get it last year after I raved about it, but I don't think hers has bloomed yet. Mary, I just cannot give Fringy away, it was too expensive, I know you were joking. I do have very many seed pods from Fringy, I put its pollen on anything fancy. Ann and I are working on a trade this fall, she is sending me a Talledaga fan for a Fringy fan. Dot

Can't decide which greenhouse to get for year round use, cold climat

From what I've seen the hobby greenhouse kits are too expensive for what you get. Try looking at the commercial greenhouse kits. Buy a strong frame built for your snow load conditions. Then if necessary save on the covering material. Double layer inflated poly is much cheaper than 2-3 layer polycarbonate. The bigger the greenhouse the lower the cost per sq ft. Cheaper still would be double layer inflated 6 mil greenhouse poly. That said if I could afford it I'd use double layer polycarbonate or similar. But I'm 75 and covering my 16ft tall greenhouse is for younger men. Covering a 14x28x9ft tall greenhouse with any poly would be easy even for me, by myself if necessary.

Think about which rooms have each type of window and what type of coverings you would use. If the upper right side is a bedroom, you don't want a third window above the others. For an open playroom, it might be okay. If the windows are low, are they too low for furniture placement? For the middle of the house, what room is that and how much light vs. wall do you want there? Decide based on how they function from the inside.

I have the same dilemma and am considering the Solae at Article. Due to some negative reviews regarding the Sven sofa, I am shopping around like you are. I'm only commenting because of the previous comment. Buy what you want. Modular furniture with a low back is very popular and I personal want it for unobstructed views. It's a little insulting (or maybe ignorant) for a person to suggest you actually sit in a sofa made by a company that is only online. Also the dimensions of the Solae piece is equal to an average length sofa. I believe 2.5 to 3 people can sit comfortably. I haven't seen negative reviews about seating. Find an open minded consultant.

I'm not a peninsula fan, so I automatically lean toward the island plan. Besides the more open feel, I like that you can work from any direction on an island...More room for more helpers, which is a big thing in our house.

One question, though. I was helping my sister redesign her kitchen and all of our island plans offered less storage than her current peninsula layout. (Although she had almost no upper cabs and you have a great section of uppers, and in a nice location.) Have you mapped out your storage, what will go where, so you know you have the storage you need where you need it? That may help with the oven vs range decision, too.

Do you have any pantry storage elsewhere in the house?

I keep a small cabinet pantry (one of those cheap laminate type at Lowes) in our laudry room, where I store cans, pasta, rice, some snacks, and some baking supplies. I store extra or large items in our unfinished basement on shelves. The little pantry in our kitchen now has cereal, oils, crackers, PB&J, honey, flour, sugar...the more common every day items. I will usually have to make a couple trips to our laundry room while cooking, but it isn't too far, although more pantry would be convenient. I do think I will get more storage with the penninsula, but I like the look of the island and getting helpers from both sides. My biggest concern with the island (besides storage) is the island being a barrier and the awkward corner on the fridge wall. I will map out my storage and see if that helps...thanks.

I like #1 because I like the island as a landing pad for the frig.

i think you could bump the island size up by a foot...than i'd like #1.

Igloochic- I would love a bigger island! How can I make it bigger...longer or wider and in which direction?

For those who think #1 is best, do you think the fridge is pushed down far enough to prevent a barrier island? Also, does anyone know if that 36" corner space could be a pantry or will the opening be too small? Thanks.

I kinda like two. Looking at it in this scale, tho, maybe prune off the peninsula and use a small cart like below - The surface of the example cart is a bit more than 2 x 3.

There's also the italian kitchen thing of bumping the final cabinet in a straight run from the range so it's about 36" to 40" deep instead of being a long peninsula. Depends on the way you work.

What rhome said, too. I like the mighty pantry because you can store all kinds of stuff in there.

bmore- nice cart. I don't think it would work for my family, though. I have visions of my kids chasing eachother around the house with it or giving rides on it!! Probably with all my prep food still on the top:)

I have never seen the italian kitchen thing you were talking about. Do you have any pictures? I'll try a search. Thanks.
