full overlay cabinet door issue

My Kraftmaid cabinets are installed. There is one problem I never realized with full overlay doors. When I open 2 of the cabinet doors at the same time, they rub against one another!

In the area with the problem, there are 2 pairs of cabinets in a row (4 cabinets total). The first 2 open together fine, the handles meet one another in the center. The next 2 open together fine the handles meet one another in the center. BUT if you open the 2nd and 3rd doors at the same time, the corners rub one another and you can't open them all the way.

I just wish I would have known this would happen because maybe I would have ordered a different door style. What a strange design.

Your doors just aren't adjusted properly, that's all. The hinges are 6 way adjustible with a screwdriver. It may take some tweaking but you CAN be able to open your doors without them rubbing. Have your installer come and adjust them correctly, and observe what he's doing as you periodically may need to adjust them with the change of seasons.

Thank you very much. My brother-in-law installed them. I don't think he realized the hinge was adjustable because when we ran into a different problem (a couple of the doors swung so far that they hit the walls next to them), he said that was the type of hinge it was, and that I probably should get bumpers or attach something to limit the door from opening that far.

I will ask my husband to check the hinge to see if it's adjustable. When it's DIY there are many surprises!

Don't feel you have to enforce vertical symmetry with the need to line the coolers up with the stacked bottles. If slightly wider ones are cheaper and would work, the go with that without a qualm. And i think having them the same dimension actually weakens the overall design, a bit. You'll notice that in colored picture, the bottle stack and the cooler doors don't line up, and it still looks well-balanced. Notice, too, that there's even an optical illusion-created discordance between the stacked bottle rack on the right and the strongly vertical-orientation of the glass-paneled doors to the left on the other side of the TV. So just making those two sides match didn't result in an eye-sweet balance, no matter what the tape measure may say. In your case, I think the strong apparent verticality of the coolers' slab doors may make them seem narrower than they actually are, creating a top heavy look to the wine racks above. This violates the general sense we have that things should be bolder, and stronger-appearing on the base, and successive layers should get lighter, narrower, smaller, or whatever. In our second drawing, with the coolers moved inward, the optical-illusion of their narrowness is resolved. Also it may just be artefacts of the layout but the D-shaped raised trim pattern on the sides of the narrow lower doors strikes me as unattractive. Also door hinging should be book-matched, or disguised to look that way. HTH L.

There is really no fundamental difference in strength between framed and framless cabinets. Poorly-built frameless cabinets will be less sturdy than well-built face-framed cabinets, and well-built frameless cabinets will be more sturdy than poorly built face-framed cabinets. Regarding your statement: I see that the small frame in the kitchen reduces very slightly the useable space in terms of installing drawers or pullout shelves, but it's not a significant difference. Some GW poster put together a comparison between frameless and face-framed and the differrence is alot more than than you would think at first. (Anyone got the link ?) For illustration purposes they compared a 12" wide base cabinet in the two styles, and assumed 3/4" thick box construction, 1/2" thick drawer boxes, 1/2" wide side mounted slides, and 2 inch face frames. With frameless the drawers ended up with an usable internel width of 12 - 2 x (3/4 + 1/2 + 1/2) = 8 1/2" vs for face-framed the drawers ended up with an usable internel width of 12 - 2 x (2 + 1/2 + 1/2) = 6" So if you want the full-overlay look, my opinion is you should go with frameless cabinets. Also regarding your daughter slamming the doors, I have seen posts about something called "blumotion for doors" which attach to the hinges (which I believe must be blum brand) which eases the door closed.

Sorry, Patricia, the crank pasta machines stay. The penninsula stays, also. There is not enough room for an island or wall ovens. The sink is at the only outside wall and it will say at the window with a view of a creek. An unfinished attic is above the stove. We are both in the kitchen prepping, cooking, and cleaning up at the same time - not one prepping then one cooking. We need more space at the stove and primary sink. This design gives us each a contained workspace without crossing each other's path constantly. . . and takes us out of the walkway. Walking through the living room provides access to the rest of the house for anyone who wants to avoid the kitchen. We view the refrigerator as the appliance that we spend the least amount of time in front of. It's close enough to the stove and the penninsula, and acts as a landing spot for both prep and cleanup. Changing the doorway also brings the kitchen closer to the deck. The only real inconvenience I see is at the doorway when the dishwasher is open. Cabinet style was a secondary consideration. Our experience with a number of purely kitchen designers is that they design great features but won't be using the kitchen with another cook once their work is done. We want and need to be able to function in our kitchen. My question involved how well inset cabinets at the penninsula would blend with full overlay slab cabinet doors. So, here are photos of the current space and preliminary measurements for the redesign. There doorway at the left will be 30" and the fridge will be about 6" to the right.

Thanks again for all these helpful tips and suggestions. Sophie and salex: Regarding adjusting the hinges in all dimensions, I have already tried adjusting all the screws (that is why the cabinet door in the right is a little higher than the one on the left) and it just seemed to make everything worse. But I can try again. Do you have suggestions for how to go about doing this? Should I adjust them all to one extreme or the other and then start tweaking various dimensions? you noticed that the doors are not parallel at the top but what you can’t see is that due to my adjustments the doors on the double cabinet are “out” or forward of all the other doors in the bank. I did have a “cabinet handyman” come out and try the same and he was unable to align them so that they could close. He got good reviews on Angie’s List but maybe he just didn’t know what he was doing? I’d gladly pay someone with experience and expertise to come and do it for me - my own experience was that each adjustment made the overlap even worse than before, so I stopped.

Your BIL is right about the hinge -it will hit the wall, but as live wire oak said the rubbing doors can be fixed by adjusting one of the screws inside the hinges. The doors shoud adjust up and down, and left to right. It's a matter of turning the correct screw. (there should be two screws)

Maybe, maybe not. I have the sab=me situation except with Armstrong cabinets. I have adjusted the left pair as far left as possible, and the right pair as far right as possible. It helped, but they still rub. The only solution I can see is to shave one of the doors about a 1/16 on both sides and then add a 1/16 spacer under the hinges. That would gain about an 1/8", which should take care of the problem.
I can match the finish color with no problem. I will probably do this when the rubbing starts to cause unsightly damage.

Thank you again guys. I will report the outcome which I hope will be good! My son already opened them at the same time and caused a rub mark.
