I am so excited, I can hardly stand it! I tagged my granite slabs today! I decided I liked the Vyara slab at one yard I visited yesterday, so called and asked if they could lay out several for me to choose from; I need slightly more than 1 slab, so will be buying two. The one I looked at yesterday was pretty, but underneath it, there were hidden two much more dramatic ones. Oh, the granite is Vyara. It's very different - and I like it much more - than the other Vyara slabs I had seen previously. I'm so glad I found them.

And together (not that I really have any place to do a butterfly, but aren't they beautiful together?!?!?!)

I am doing a roughly 4' x 6' island and a perimeter L; one leg of the L will be about 10' with a cooktop in it and the other leg of the L will be about 9' with the main sink in it.

It feels so good to have 2 MAJOR decisions made - cabinets (style and finish at least) and counter tops.

That is beautiful. Is that Vyara Juparana? I have picked Juparana Gold which is dramatic like yours too. I did not take pictures and as a result keep second guessing my choice. Yours is gorgeous. I think I will go back out to the granite yard and get some pictures. Seeing it like you have here makes it so much better. You are going to love it. Do you get to place the templates at the granite yard so you can place your "butterfly wings" where you want them?

I'd definitely agree about glass giving your space a more modern direction. I'm thinking black glass would also be very 'hard' visually -- another surface with a 'strong, masculine' bent. Is that something you want? What direction DO you want to go in? (If it were me, I'd tip just a bit back to the 'softer and more feminine side' with a ceramic tile with a bit of a 'cushion' shape (handmade) and a color that's rich but not too dark. I'm thinking a simple 4x4 on a diagonal layout with a frame treatment over the range... While I love the metal decos, I think they may add too much 'clutter' to an element that needs to be more 'background'. You've also got a lot of outlets in your splash -- so there will already be things there -- things you probably don't want to draw the eye to...

One thing now we're having a hard time deciding is if we want to have a soap dispenser hole drilled. The faucet kit came with one. I was reading another thread on the Kitchen Forums with a lot of valid pros and cons for having/not having one and using the NeverMT underneath.

Dear Polar Princess, I am happy to read of your recent survivorship and a getting new lease on life. I think your oak cabinets look very well made and can be a star with some new accessories. Oak is a timeless, beautiful wood. Here are the changes I would try for minimal cost: 1) As has been mentioned numerous times: remove the stenciling & ivy to freshen the look. 2) If you can easily remove the light bridge over the sink and add molding to the top of the 2 cabinets where it connected, that will also modernize the look, as previous poster suggested, for not much money. 3) Backsplash: Provide Maximum sizzle and splash, which will transform the kitchen with a shimmering glass tile mosaic. See link below as example. Your area is not big, so you could pull this off for only $200 to $250 in materials. 4) Definitely bring in the brown leather bar stools you like or even something very modern in style as a contrast. 5) Counter tops: white laminate is not necessarily bad. In fact, if you add a shimmering glass backsplash that is a nice counterpoint to the white counters, you may find they are now more pleasing to you, without going to the expense of adding granite. You already know how easy to maintain your laminate counters are. You might jazz them up with some interesting place mats or update your centerpiece to be more in keeping with the brown leather & mosaics. 6) Window valence: maybe replace the lace look with something more tailored to complement the new backsplash and stools. 7) Wall paint: See how the backsplash changes the look and decide if you want to add wall color or not. 8) If you still yearn for SS appliances, check into changing out the front panels of the frig and dishwasher with SS. Don't think that is possible with the stove. I would really keep the bisque because they will look nice with the new backsplash as well. Can't match my granite, what other granite should I pick?

Thank you. I want to replace it to make it a little larger, it is still functional. Looking at the original floorplan of the house, the island was supposed to be 36 X 72, but the original owners made it 25 X 72, so I just want to have a larger island. I had previously seen a home with the same floorplan that had the original island size and I really liked the way it looked. I will probably have to have someone come and refinish the counters though bc there are nick and chips throughout it. Since we are adding the ledge already, I figured we should also do the island since the pricing is coming less than I had expected. Here is a partial closeup. I was actually taking a picture of the carpet, but it's the best one I have with no flash.

It's gorgeous, but I'm prejudiced because Vyara Classic is on my short list. Those slabs are prettier Vyara than any I've seen. You're going to be happy with it. The movement is lovely.

What cabinet style and finish did you choose?

Thanks everyone. It really feels good to get the positive feedback. I just wasn't excited, even driving down there. But then I got there and saw the slabs laid out... I felt like I uncovered treasure, buried under the top slab in the stack. I feel so lucky to have liked the top slab enough to want to choose it; and I ended up not taking it!

There's a small piece of my cabinet finish and a cup and dish towel in one of the original pictures, but here's a close up.

The cabinets will be a natural beech with water borne finish in a shaker style. I am a blue person, so I needed a granite that would look good with blue dishes, towels, tea kettle, etc. This fits the bill.

jstehl - it was labeled as Vyhara, so I don't know if it's the same as Vyara Juparana. The VJ I've seen is alot darker, but then there is so much variation stone to stone. I ALMOST went with Vyara Gold - I think it's gorgeous, every slab I've seen. It's very beautiful and flowy. My concern (and the feedback I got from stoneyard staff) was that it was too close to my cabinet color and the two would blend too much, not enough contrast. If you can, go back and get pics; I've already questioned myself once, then looking at the pics I know I made the right choice! And yes, I will decide on template placement. But, unfortunately, I don't think my layout allows for a butterfly. But I will be sure to place the beautiful, big swirls prominently. One will look gorgeous on my island! And take cabinet sample, accents and put into the pictures....

Wow, that's beautiful! And I'll bet I just fell in love with a stone I can't find in my area. Again. ;-)

lisa - who knows, maybe not? Where do you live? I'm in Petaluma, north of San Francisco; the stone yard is Daltile in San Leandro (East Bay Area). If you're not in SF Bay Area, Daltile has locations all over the country. Maybe some of the others got slabs from the same mountain and/or block? Here's a picture of a slab I didn't take - not as fabulous as mine, of course (okay, I'm prejudiced), but gorgeous if you look at it on its own.

It's slab #G031301IN-A01, in case that helps, and there were 2 or 3 others just as pretty. Oh, and this one is still on reserve, but I'll probably release it in the next day or two.

breezy - too long! :) I'm GCing this and DH is carpenter; we're doing the job in 3 phases. Mudroom cabinet rebuild just got finished, now we're demoing the half bath/laundry room area. Once that's rebuilt and the pantry is done, we'll get to work on the kitchen proper. My HOPE is that we'll get to counter tops in 5-7 weeks. Wish me luck with that!

Thanks, katkatf! I'm up the coast from you in Portland 'burbs so perhaps this granite is available in my area, too. Thanks for the slab info but I'm still months away from doing my reno so the most I can do is put this granite and vendor on my wish list.

That's a wonderful combination for your cabinet color! There is many varieties of the "Vyara" family of granite, this looks closet to the Juparana Vyara as someone had mentioned. Can't wait to see how it looks installed. Good luck!
