Help! Help! Pendant spacing & number, need to know tonight!!!!!

Hi - I need to quickly make a decision about my pendant lights:

Island is 7' 5" wide.

Pendant lights are pure clear glass with a black base at the ceiling, and are 8.5" in diametre.

Very limited due to beams etc. where I can put them.

I either:

a) have 2 lights spaced 18" (give or take an inch or 2) from the edges of the island and approx 40" from each other

2) 3 pendants - the 2 outside ones are 18" from the edge of the island and 24"/2' from the centre pendant.

I'm worried 2 lights will be too minimal and 3 lights will be too close together.

Need to make this decision tonight - Help!!!!!

All of these measurements are to the centre of the lights.

I think 3 will be fine: a lot of people [including me] do 3 over a 6 foot island.

My island is also 7.5 feet long, and I have 3 8-inch wide pendants. Your post got me curious, so I went to measure their placement. Mine two outside ones are about 12 inches from the edge of the counter and 30 inches from the center pendant, and it looks fine. I might have chosen to have them around 15 inches in and 27 inches from the center, but I wasn't here when they started that job. If you're worried about them being too close together having them 18 inches in from the edge, know that it's OK to have them 3 to 6 inches farther out. Hope this helps.

we taped the outline of the island on the floor not for light placement but just to get an idea of the whole aircraft carrier., I mean island. The lights were placed after cabinents and countertops. I used the Quoizel Grant Pendants. The have a rod like your pictures show. We had the option of buying additional rods if needed. We have pitched ceilings so the lights are different lengths but hung level, a fun day indeed. Did you go to the manufacturer's web site to see if there is a companion chandy? if not, maybe call them and ask them for an idea on a complementary light?

I like that mock-up. That looks great Rebunky. I just made a "Globe Pendant" IdeaBook on Houzz hoping to find an island Erica's size & specific globe pendants sizes. So frustrating, as either the island size wasn't listed or the pendant size wasn't listed. While I was doing that, you made that great mock-up. I really like the two pics of the black island kitchen you posted earlier and the mock-up looks very much like that size & spacing. The outer pendants might be able to move just a tiny bit closer (a smidge) to the edge of the counter. edit: based on the mock-up, 14" pendants?

I would not do a pendant in this kitchen, you wont get the impact because you can only do one and it cannot be large or it would look out of place over the counter top. another factor is your ceiling height, which I assume to be 8ft, this means a large pendant really wont work as you will not get much cord drop. I know you are looking for pretty here, I get that, but this room will change a lot once the wall goes back in and the counter is placed. if i was you I would have them center an electrical box where you want the pendant on the idea that they can come back in and change it to a remodel pot if you decide against it.

IMHO, better to use 3 than 2. You can always put 3 of them on a dimmer if it is too bright, but difficult to add more light if 2 aren't enough.

I have a 7' island and two pendants. Our pendents are 9" in diameter, so two were plenty. We planned it that way b/c my DH didn't want the pendents to visually "cut off" the kitchen space. They hold 100W bulbs so the light they give off is way more than adequate for the area.

We are installing 3 LV 50W pendants (on a dimmer) over a six ft peninsula. The shades are 5 inches in diameter and the lights are spaced at 20, 40, and 60 inches.

I think I would go for the 3. I always like more light wherever I can get it, though.
