Help!Kitchen addition to make room for grand piano & harpsichord!
Comments (23)funkycamper, i think the contractor is able to work some magic with walls and beams, so most or at least part of the kit/living wall could be removed. and again, he's lifting the ceiling, so he has a lot of choices of where to configure the walls, if I can give him a basic idea of what we need. I think we need to keep the 3rd bedroom, since most of the houses here have at least 3 bedrooms. I can't see rebuilding a wall again down the road for resale. Rather do it all now. Also, keep in mind we DO want to increase the square footage, so sippimom, although your idea is really unique about the northeast sunroom, and I like it a lot, it only gives us a little over 100sf more, where we're really looking for 350 or so. Other potential trickiness of opening up past the fireplace: the town is picky about anything other than back additions we might fit both instruments in there, but they would be isolated from everyone else--good for practice, bad for chamber concert. need it open to some seating, at least for the piano it would get rid of the side front entrance, forcing entry thru the front door or the garage, which is small and tight, so not good for bringing in groceries. Thanks for your responses. it is helping me clarify exactly what the needs are. I guess my real question is, what would a good layout be for a back addition, that would perhaps allow one instrument to stay in the living room and the other to be in the addition WITH an expanded kitchen/seating area. Is this possible? Should I perhaps also post on a different forum?...See MoreBaby grand piano and living room furniture placement
Comments (48)Definitely leaning towards neutrals, as this is the color scheme of this entire level of the house. All walls are BM cloud white. All windows have black curtains. Flooring is the same gray/taupe hardwood throughout. I was thinking caramel brown leather to pop out on that black shiplap wall, but may be too pricy for 4 chairs. Definitely don't want anything traditional or fussy (which I KNOW goes hand in hand with the mahogany piano but alas I cannot change that lol!) Furniture in the adjacent rooms is cream/gray/wood. I'll upload a picture when I get home to give an idea...See MoreRug for under grand piano
Comments (3)Before I even finished reading, I thought, “Cowhide rug!” :) Yes, I think any color combo cowhide or a zebra would look awesome in there. Congrats on your new home, it’s beautiful!...See MoreHelp us place a Baby Grand Piano in our Living Room
Comments (10)Since the piano will be the star of this space, you need to consider these guidelines to ensure high quality sound and a healthy location for the grand. The visual bulk of the piano with the lid open will be sufficient to replace both of your tall casegoods pieces. A good spot might be to place it diagonally across the corner where the keyboard is now. The lid should open against the corner so the sound will be thrown out in to the room and not against the walls. That might also locate the pianist somewhat under the chandelier, which could be helpful in reading music. With the two tall pieces out of the room, move the sofa and sofa table opposite their current location, and then work on placing the two chairs at the best spots for enjoying the music. Perhaps one could go in the corer with the drop leaf table for a reading/listening spot near the window. The other one Might angle near the hearth or under the sconce near the doorway to the other room You'll have to play with them a bit....See Moreblondepegasus
