Looking for drapes in a not-quite-red color

I'm having a hard time finding drapes in a color that isn't burgundy, and also is not a true red. It's sort of a persimmon color I'm looking for, I guess. My dining room rug is linked below. The red in the photo looks more like a true red, but it's not. My walls are BM Stuart Gold. I'm not looking for anything too formal (no shiny silks), as this is not a formal room (furniture is contemporary cherry -- Pompanoosuc Mills, if anyone is familiar with them), just some simple panels. Any suggestions, besides finding fabric and having them made? (Um, there's not really a 'budget' for this purchase.)

The ebay ones look very pinky-red to me. I would also be worried that they wouldn't match, and trying to return them might be impossible, unless the seller allows it.

What about this one from JCP, in the tuscany colorway?

I looked at Kardinal on an image search and some of them look red, but some look pink and some look more orange. I think the camera, the culture, and the lighting conditions influence the photographs so it's hard to tell which is really true red. I used to have an American beauty growing up, I thought it was really red, but now I read it's on the pink side. It was not a hybrid tea, it was more like a big huge bush with red roses on it. It's probably good to go to rose shows and nursery to see them in person before selection a color that is the red that you want.

Oceanna, I had thought of custom roller shades, but I know they are much, much thicker than the vinyl and I don't think I would be able to use the inside mount like I have now, based on the way the windows are built -- but I am going to look into it. Love your gallery threads, BTW. Les, thanks for bringing up the roman shade idea. I actually had thought of that when I redid the room 4 years ago and bought the current bedding set. But I made valences instead, which I never really liked. They just didn't seem to finish the windows. About a year ago, I bought the sheers currently on the windows, just to get rid of the valences. They are not quite the right color, or style for that matter, but an improvement over the valences. I really want the windows to have a finished, custom look. When the shades are rolled completely up, they almost disappear against the white of the window, so they will "do", but I really want to get rid of them. I think I am going to make the side panels first, then go from there. Problem with me is that I want everything done and completed yesterday! It drives me crazy to have unfinished projects, but I know the drapes are going to take a bit of thinking as well as time to get them right.

I'm mostly a lurker, but wanted to share my experience with a vendor in India. About ten years ago, I was admirinig my neighbor's new curtains. She said she got them custom-made from some guy in India. Got his number from her and talked to him. After seeing some samples, selected the fabrics I wanted (silk for the LR and bed covers, faux-silk for the DR and BRs, and drapery fabric for the kitchen cafe curtains and valances). Gave him as accurate measurements of every window as I could, chose the pleats and length, etc. in about thre weeks, they were all shipped to us. Not a thing I didn't want or expect. We had someone come hang everything up and it was simply beautiful. Every single item. It's been 9 years and I still have them up and they look just as beautiful. Ad the prices were relatively low. Have given his name to others who've seen my curtains and asked where I got them. I have been a member for over ten years and I'm not pulling for any vendor. Just wanted to share. I'd post pictures if I knew how, but will try when I have some time.

I think you are on the right track by entending the panel out past the frame to show off more window and enjoy your view. However, when you do that, it is done by raising the rod higher than the trim therefore hiding the fact that the rod actually is wider than the window. It is supposed to "fool" the eye, so to speak. You will only be covering about three extra inches of trim by going up into the drywall. You can still use your rods, I don't know why you need one long one, just reposition them and get longer drapes. I just used a color suggested above, I know you can do better than my quick painted look. You might also need to place the hooks on the pleats so they stand up past the rings (not hanging down below the rings as we typically do) so the top of the white trim doesn't show. I just did a very similar window/trim situation and we loved the way the drapery seemed more connected to the rod, not leaving the space between them.

I would go with plain, one color drapes, or a stripe. Flowers & flowers may be overwhelming.

Try the Pottery Barn website. They have these Red like drapes, single color.

I had to print out the pic of the ebay drapes and carry the pic into the dining room to say, Oh No, these wouldn't work at all! Les, I like the first ones you linked to, but it looks to me like there's more of a beigey-gold color in them, which won't really work with my relatively bright gold walls. But the JCP ones are a possibility, esp. at that price!

If you go into Penney's catalog section, they have books behind the counter with swatches of all drapery fabrics in ALL colors. If you can take a swatch or something in with the color you want, it would be easiest to match it that way. Last time I checked they had 4 books full of drapery swatches, organized by the drapery name. That might help you find the red that you want because they all look so different on a monitor or catalog page. This way you can see the actual color/fabric.

I think you're going to have to shop in stores where you can physically look at what's offered in order to get the right color. Reds are hard when it comes to finding a specific shade in a fabric. My antique rug in bedroom is persimmon and not many off the rack reds are going to work with it. The swatch idea when shopping is great. If you don't have a piece of anything to take, go get a handful of paint chips in what you think are close reds, bring them home to compare and take the best of that group with you when you go hunting.

Don't completely discount having drapes made if you just want something simple. I made these in the link below and they were extremely simple to do, with an attached valance and the long fringe.

And keep this in mind. You don't have to match. It just needs to look Good together. Sometimes a fabric that doesn't look like it would be a really good match will look unexpectedly great in the room.

Like the idea of using paint chips in place of a swatch! I've resorted to using embroidery floss to help select items when I couldn't carry a room size rug around w/ me. LOL!

Don't get TOO hung up on getting a PERFECT match. There isn't enough red in the rug that a slight shade or two darker or lighter would matter. Plus you have to remember that the light (sun & lamp) will absorb differenly because of the difference in surface textures & planes of the rug & the fabric.

Love your rug choice BTW!

I have the same problem with the red in my couch pillows. They are kinda cranberry color. Have more purple in them that I orginally thought. I'll have to see the red in person before decided if its the right now.

How did you make out?

If you do order the ones from Penney's do an online search for JC Penney coupon codes.. you might be able to get as much as 30% off or free shipping.

The problem with the ebay ones are that you don't know how true to color they are since not only will your monitor show it differently, you don't know the accuracy of the sellers camera, especially since red is one of the hardest colors for cameras. Unless I've already seen them in stores, I wouldn't buy something like this from ebay.

Sippi, I wish I'd known that before. I just got my JCP drapes and I don't like the color. But I'm glad to know it now. When I return them I'll ask about that and take some samples with me. Or maybe I'll just sew my own.

How about Country Curtains? I remember seeing this fabric in the store. I thought it was a more muted red. A little orangey pink, if that makes any sense. If there isn't a store near you, they can send swatches.
