Hanging iron wall decor on the outside (composite sidings)

Hello!

I've been wanting to hang an iron wall decor on the outside wall of my house. The exterior is made up of composite sidings. I don't feel comfortable drilling holes for screws, hooks or nails because I am afraid it might either split the wood or introduce leaks. Should I be concerned, or is it not really a big deal to drill a couple of small holes on the sidings? Perhaps there is a better way to handle it altogether. Please advise.

Is that thing going to rust and drip all down your siding?

I hung a star on our siding in February and it is still working just fine.

I used a interior plastic picture hanger with little nails on it. No rust or problem holding on to the siding but not through it. The star is in a windy, wet location.

Ahhh, thank you, "holiday-ers"... Am glad you enjoyed the iron/wood wall hanging & the Mammoth sunflower... LOL at OA's comment: "Just a word of caution: If your sunflowers are tipping over, I wouldn't stand too near. Should you get clobbered by one, we may never hear from you again." Boy, that could be an embarassing "way to go!" LOL! Karen...thanks for posting that pic...it's one of my favs, too...Fall/Winter & cardinals just make awesome pics! I have made photo cards for many yrs & enjoy photography so much. What is so cool about photos is that you can "vignette" them...isolate an area & really see the beauty in something because you're not looking at the "big picture." Cause, believe me, my gardens & home have weeds, dust, crab grass, etc. etc. LOL! DH & I are both retired & woodworking is a hobby ...so, yes, there are many, many birdhouses around our acreage...but we also take them to Farmer's Mrkt. Life is good. Thanks, holiday-ers. Jeanne S.

Thanks, Holiday-ers! Appreciate all your gracious comments. PM...the corkscrew willow branches are used alot around here...I use big ones to stake up toppling flowers & just love the look of them...our son trims his trees alot so we take bunches to FMrkt, too...I use around bird feeders & such for them to perch. We have a couple planted here & they are fast growers! punk...bet your gourds did cross...love those bumpy ones, too... loved them on your t'scape centerpc! I like that bunny, too...his coloring is good for the Baker's rack. candy...~~blush~~thank you...& hope you try your B'Rack outdoors! jane...you make me smile...love 'enablers' on this forum! It's never too late to start a new collection, ya know! ;-) My pine greens keep ok outside for the Winter...I guess just cause of the coolness & later the ice & snow! (ugh) I use solar lights outside in the Winter, too...in a galvanized washtub near the birdfdr off the porch...they seem to do ok in the cold. nana...thank you...love to hear your comments! Jeanne S.

california dreamer, anyway you could get a photo of the friend's curtains? My new bedroom is window less, only has a single glass door. I was thinking of hanging curtains behind the bed, so I'm curious to how the curtains look hanging on each side. If you can't get photo's, can you give some dimensions of the curtains vs the size of the wall? liz, Christopher Lowell, famed TV personality and designer, loved, loved, loved fabric covering walls. Hi scanmike, I found my first wall grille several years ago on Ebay....before the shipping fees were going through the roof. I found my second and third wall iron decorative piece on my Craigs List. Go to CL and type in the city you are in or the closest large city near you. I usually use the search terms: Wall Iron or Wall Metal That brings up almost everything to do with Iron or Metal Wall decor. The last Iron Wall piece I got from Craigs List was originally from Z Gallery. The original price was still on it. Months passed and by the time Seller got into her new home and settled in, she realized she didn't have a wall large enough to hang it. Original price $135. My Price: $40. This one was Big, Heavy...not aluminum painted to look like iron. Although I have a few of those light-weight aluminum pieces too. Just make sure it matches your siding - that way, if you want to take the piece down, you can leave the hanger for future use.

My house is brick and I have permanent brick screws on my window ledges for hanging my Christmas wreaths. I also have permanent screws on my patio for hanging a summer wrought iron hanger that holds herb pots that I put ivy in. At Christmas, I use the same hardware to hang something for Christmas.

A couple of small nails shouldn't hurt anything and if you decide to use screws always pre-drill so wood doesn't split. Place the hanger either near the top or the middle of the plank and avoid the bottom edge. You're more likely to split the wood if you hang it near the bottom edge.

You have an overhang so I doubt much rain actually hits that wall (unless you have lots of wind). Leaks won't be a problem and if you ever remove the nail or screw then just fill the small hole with some silicone.

Don't know where you live, but in some climates you can use Command Hooks outdoors. Here's what their website says:

Q: Can I use CommandÃ¢ÂÂ¢ Products outside in cold climates?
A: You can, but the adhesive should be applied to a clean, smooth, dry surface when the temperature is above 50F (10C). If the temperature is below 50F, you can heat the surface with a hair dryer before application.

Q: Can I use CommandÃ¢ÂÂ¢ Products outside in hot climates?
A: Extreme heat conditions and sunlight may cause the adhesive to eventually deteriorate, causing product failure. The adhesive could soften and lose adhesion above 105F (40C).

You can use 2 hooks if your piece is heavy. Some of their products are rated for wet locations, too, which I'd probably use outside.

I'm starting to sound like I own their stock, but I don't :)

Our past house had vinyl siding and I hung things all over the place. I had pot hangers, hooks for x-mas decorations, racks for tools (on the hidden side), etc.

Never had a problem and there was wood siding underneath. We drilled through the siding into the wood. No leaks or cracks for 20 yrs.
