I think you've received some great suggestions. Of course, you came to the right place! I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for your loss. My mom passed away almost 6 years ago, and some days, it seems unreal to me, and we weren't even super-close. So many days I need to know someone's name, or fill in the blanks in a childhood memory, or just have a question about how to do something. I invariably find myself going for the phone. Then I remember that she's gone, and it's been 6 years! Anyway, my mom and grandma passed away within 5 years of each other, and my brother and I got everything from both of their houses. We sold a lot, and kept the stuff that had memories or an emotional attachment, like your tables and lamps. Some of the stuff I started using/had sitting out right away. But, my grandma had a china cabinet bursting with glassware and teapots and such. So much of it is not my taste... too pinky and too many ribbons and roses for me. But, my grandma was the center of my universe, and she loved those things. So, they still sit in a couple dozen cartons, in the basement storeroom. Fast forward ten years... I "made" a silver and crystal vanity table-top set for my MIL for Christmas. I bought the tray cuz she wanted the non-tarnish silver, and I bought a few crystal tumblers for eyeliners, lipsticks, and other tube cosmetics. I wanted a small bowl for center front in my arrangement. I had it in my head that there was a little crystal bowl in Grandma's stuff, and it would be so cool to give one of her things to my MIL, who has sort of taken her place in my life. So I started searching, and searching. Turns out that the "crystal" bowl was just pressed glass, so that was a wasted hunt. But, the good that came out of it was that after ten years, some of the emotional bond with the stuff had faded. I now think I am ready to go through it, pick out the stuff that I really do like, and consign the rest. So, some of the emotion/guilt fades after a few years, and it's easier to deal with these items. Of course, in your case, it's not two houses FULL of stuff, and you actually like what you got! Sorry for the long story. Your tables and lamps look great, btw!

No wonder you are confused. My head was spinning after reading all of the opinions! I was following the original post, but this is my first look at your follow-up. I agree with the others about finding another shade for first lamp if you decide to use it. The present shade is too short and it is the wrong style. My suggestion would be to take the lamp into a lighting store that sells shades. There you will have some expert advice as well as the option to "try on" various shades, much in the same way that you would try on clothes to determine the most flattering fit and combination. Think of the gas you will save! These are some guidelines for shades that I have found useful: 1. Match the base  think size, shape, style, color. Your goal is to match the mood of the base. 2. Compliment the base  the shade should make the base look better without competing with for attention (like that patterned shade on the metal lamp) 3. Hide the switch  the shade should just barely cover the switch (usually the height of harp + ½ inch). Try different sized harps, or add a shade riser to fine-tune. 4. Sizing Rules of Thumb: (1) Shade height should be about ¾ the height of the base (2) Bottom of shade should be wider than widest part of the base. (3) Shade width should be approximately equal the height from bottom lamp base to the top of the lamp stem, (just below the socket cap) I like both lamps. I think either one will be beautiful, but I would not use both of them in that room. Rather than another ginger jar, it would be nice to use a different architectural form on the console. I like the console very much. I do not like the metal/glass (marble?) lamp with the patterned shade. I would look for gorgeous buffet lamps. I am thinking wooden with an antique gold finish (very simple, but elegant). These are high end lamps, but use as examples. If you want the console to appear more sophisticated, remove the dried flower wreath that is resting on the books below, and remove the wicker basket with the greens from the top of the console. Replace it with a grouping of three (the magic number) similar objects (candles, boxes, ceramics, etc.) of different height and proportion. Good luck and keep up the good work. Thank you everyone for the honest opinions. This was an impulse buy; but I've figured out the solution. We are going to buy a guest cottage for all of my CL finds that are just too tempting to pass up! I wish.... Tomorrow I may try them in the LR, though the LR furniture is all mahogany. I realize now I really need to get rid of the bookcase as once I shoved it over more there seems to be more space--perhaps for a 24" round. Tomorow it's going on CL. I'll try the drum tables for size there tomorrow. I'll take some more pics tomorrow and start a new thread about my FR--please look for it. I've been stumped with this room for over a year now. I do need to get a bookcase and 1-2 end tables. I really need some different perspectives. I'm liking the ottoman there at least. It never worked before I realize now because there were no side tables. If anyone can help me with the design-a-room software, I'd really appreciate it.

Well, we didn't like any of the rugs we ordered from eSaleRugs so we aborted the decorating of this room for now. We are doing a first floor remodel so we had to put all of our living room furniture into the dining room to store it there. Our living room is now our temp kitchen while the kitchen get's torn down to the studs. So it'll be a few months before we are able to see the floor or walls of the dining room!
