Other table at other end of couch - Sorry lighting is still an issue - but I'm lovin the sunshine! The cat is not ours - he visits us almost everyday - We nicknamed him "Cupcake" - he matches the rug!

This is what used to be on other end of couch - I also stole a different shade for the lamp - better but still not the right shade I don't think

Now I'm wondering can I use round at one end - needs to be closer & will put photo, books back - but I think this honking couch needs really weighty pieces -

I love the nesting tables. They are perfect. They are 'weighty' and the clean lines do go well with the curvy upholstered pieces because of the traditional style they have.

The round table needs a spot for it somewhere.

The nesting tables from your Mom are perfect there. I also like the lamps but I am not good at suggesting lampshades. Maybe someone with more experience will pipe in. I think I like the round table on the other end, first because I like the idea of two different shapes on either end and I think it fits in well.
Just my 2 cents.

I think the nesting tables are great, but I'd have the "stair-steps" face front, rather than the side. I'd also scoot the sofa out from the wall just a bit, so it has some room to breathe.

Move the round table closer in to the sofa. Move sofa out from wall. Leave nesting tables as you have them. Keep Cupcake.

Another vote for the nesting tables. They are lovely. As for a table for the other side, I would prefer to see something of the same height as the nesting tables--perhaps sawing a few inches off the base of the round table so that then the crane lamps will be at the same height. If not that, then I'd find a different lamp for the other table and place the other crane lamp elsewhere in the room.

Not only do I like your mom's tables -- I bought a set of your grandmother's tables recently at an antique store and have them next to my couch!

Not crazy about the round table there -- I liked the rectangular one better. No help at all on the lampshade, I'm afraid, but hoping my comment will keep this thread going till Les sees it! (: Her unerring eye will know what you need.

You know you could put the round table on the other side or use the drop-leaf table over there and put the nesting tables on the opposite end. The stairwell kind of creates a backdrop there and the round table might be weightier and give the stairs less prominence and less less and more. LOL. The tables, the stairs. Why not one table (round) against the stairs and allow the nesting tables to have no competition on the other end, but stand alone on their own. They are worthy.

Thanks ladies - Nesting tables stay (love you mom!) - just the proper configuration - I'll try the round table on the stair side as Patricia suggested - but it's not drop leaf & I don't think it will work -

Love the tables, & the crane lamps work so well with your things! Yes, I agree a shade that is not pleated would be better w/these lamps.

I really like your whole room, btw! The pair of green chairs w/the stripe... adorable, & I love the pillows on them. Where did you find the chairs? Also really like your setee & the little table w/the plant on it, and the cachepot that's on the table, and the plant that's in the...well, it's all good!

stinky - Thank you, The chairs are fr. a local furniture store - Martha Stewart by Bernhardt, pillows I had made at same store - the settee was a steal! $125 at a shop in Maine - it's in great shape - an Eastlake I believe. That table is a disaster - it either needs paint/stain or fabric skirt - Thanks for the kind words

I love Patricia43's idea of the round table by the stairs and the absolutely gorgeous nesting tables on the other end. You may need to scootch down the sofa and picture just a tad? I think the "square' shades are just right for your lamps, just the barest hint of the orient. And you have such lovely furniture, that sofa is H & M the one of 3dogs chesterfield sofa fame? and those green chairs are great.

Love your mom's tables and I like them there. Do play with them a bit as has been suggested. The square lamp shade is also perfect. Good job, Suero!! (Pretty sofa too...)

I adore your mom's lamps! They seem to have the beautiful rust-red of Imari.

Those nesting tables are absolutely perfect. I kind of like the round table on the other side; it would function very well as a place to put books, magazines, etc. where the nesting tables would not, and also because it's kind of unexpected. The lamps are also wonderful. It's so nice when family pieces are treasured, as these certainly will be.

cooper - I'll try the table on the other side of couch - Yes, the couch is H&M Chesterfield - it is extermely comfy & well made. Dh insisted on this - I was orig not in favor but have come to embrace it.

I think you've received some great suggestions. Of course, you came to the right place!

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for your loss. My mom passed away almost 6 years ago, and some days, it seems unreal to me, and we weren't even super-close. So many days I need to know someone's name, or fill in the blanks in a childhood memory, or just have a question about how to do something. I invariably find myself going for the phone. Then I remember that she's gone, and it's been 6 years!

Anyway, my mom and grandma passed away within 5 years of each other, and my brother and I got everything from both of their houses. We sold a lot, and kept the stuff that had memories or an emotional attachment, like your tables and lamps.

Some of the stuff I started using/had sitting out right away. But, my grandma had a china cabinet bursting with glassware and teapots and such. So much of it is not my taste... too pinky and too many ribbons and roses for me. But, my grandma was the center of my universe, and she loved those things. So, they still sit in a couple dozen cartons, in the basement storeroom.

Fast forward ten years... I "made" a silver and crystal vanity table-top set for my MIL for Christmas. I bought the tray cuz she wanted the non-tarnish silver, and I bought a few crystal tumblers for eyeliners, lipsticks, and other tube cosmetics. I wanted a small bowl for center front in my arrangement. I had it in my head that there was a little crystal bowl in Grandma's stuff, and it would be so cool to give one of her things to my MIL, who has sort of taken her place in my life. So I started searching, and searching. Turns out that the "crystal" bowl was just pressed glass, so that was a wasted hunt. But, the good that came out of it was that after ten years, some of the emotional bond with the stuff had faded. I now think I am ready to go through it, pick out the stuff that I really do like, and consign the rest. So, some of the emotion/guilt fades after a few years, and it's easier to deal with these items. Of course, in your case, it's not two houses FULL of stuff, and you actually like what you got!

Sorry for the long story. Your tables and lamps look great, btw!

I think either a barrel shade or drum shade in ivory silk would update the lamps (which are beautiful!) and coordinate with the ivory drapes you're planning...and the pretty rug. Restoration Hardware has their lamp shades on sale -

janetta - what a lovely story thank you for sharing - I too have picked up the phone so many times over the past few months to "call" mom - I have ongoing conversations ALL the time. I lost both parents in less than 2yrs - they downsized 2x to smaller places, so what remained was very important -

There's plenty of little things that need re-arranging/doing - i.e too much stuff on hearth - I have been on a forever hunt for candle sconces for either side of fireplace (see the elec cover) - & I'm not photoing one side of the room - long narrow room - that needs sort of 3 separate seatings/areas - I have an idea later for that!

I love the lamps and the nesting tables. Your room is great! Have you thought about a geometric lamp shade like the white one shown earlier, but in black? I'm a big fan of black shades with gold fabric in the lining. I think it would go well with the leather sofa and hard wood flooring. I dont know how to photoshop but I'm sure someone else reading this might be able to. I like the idea of the round table on the other end too...never liked matchy-matchy looks such as matching end tables and lamps, but with a different table on either end, the 2 lamps wouldn't look to matching. Hope this helps too!..Sorry about your mom too...lost mine 6 years ago....We all need our mothers dont we...no matter what age we are!

Jet, I think you've done a fantastic job re-arranging the room~you got some great suggestions.

Your lamps are so pretty~is the background a metallic gold? It's hard to tell on the monitor. A pagoda style shade would give them more oomph.

You've very fortunate to have such lovely family heirlooms. 9 children can really stir up a lot of 'emotion', so i'm sure it wasn't easy. ;o)

First, I'm so sorry about the loss of your dear mother. There never is a good time to lose our moms, is there? I still think of my mother often, and miss her.

Everything looks so lovely in your beautiful room, and you've already gotten some wonderful suggestions here. I love the carved wood on the bottom of your sofa, the green chairs, the beautiful rug, the nesting tables, and the lamps. Your mother left you really special pieces.

I like the rectangular table beside the sofa. The round table is wonderful and would probably look beautiful skirted, elsewhere.
