LOL Ollie! Lynn, what about putting a row of bottles on a shelf with an ornament in each one? I have some antique bottles in the kitchen and was thinking about doing that.

Wouldn't the bottles weigh the branches down?

Bottles on a tree absolutely will work. And your idea of wire wrapped around the top is spot on. Have you ever seen Victorian candle lights? They are like votive candle holders but curvier with a "jelly glass" like lip that wire was wrapped around and fashioned into a hanger. The glass was usually decorative and colored. Beautiful!

At first, since it was your post, I was expecting wine bottles hanging from the tree.
I think your idea of using the smaller bottles with wire wrapped tops and dried flowers tucked in is beautiful- I can see it in my mind.
One of my friends did a beautiful victorian tree with nothing but dried flowers , red cockscomb , Coronation gold yarrow, babys breath etc. etc. The ahhh factor was the velvet garland she made. It was over soft cording and was gathered over the cording, so it was wonderful.
Any hoo. I like the idea and you have to post a photo of the "dig" and its relics!!!

JavAchick, I did see those when researching this idea but not how they were hung. I thought maybe they were tucked in the branches somehow so thanks for the explanation. Oakie they are all quite small (the ones I'd use) and since the tree is fake (because I have to put it up so early) I think the branches will hold.

Ollie...lol. I'd be tempted to recreate that tree in antique bottles if they were all the same size...just for the giggles.

We have found a few wines sue heh heh they will reside in the wine cellar where they can share stories of the good old days with the new wines in storage. Much more fun for them than sitting in the dirt.

I love the velvet cording idea. I'm trying to keep this tree simple because it was in the servants quarters (or is). I have cranberry garland and may make popcorn garland. I have oddness of hand make cotton lace from my husbands grandmother in the shape of bells etc that will go on it, and yes, dried flowers. I'd also like to make cinnamon ginger boys but need to figure out the recipe first. Very homespun in feel.

I still need to finish fifty stockings....and deck out the entire house while entertaining on thanksgiving and having twenty people for the weekend before....I don't know why I feel time is running thin lol. I am seriously considering telling the wives of our guests that weekend that tree decoration is their focus instead of shopping heh heh.

I used to make real cranberry garlands for our tree.( cinnamon flavored dental floss and a doll needle are all you need- oh and a couple of good movies.
I have gotten lazy- I have to say I now have cranberry colored wooden bead garlands that always go on the tree.
You can also put on candle bobs which are weighted candle holders with real candles that balance on the branch with a counter weight. And NO we don't light them ever. They are very Victorian.
Its easy to make gingerbread boys from applesauce and cinnamon- just google for the recipe. I bought the cinnamon in bulk and huge jars of applesauce.
I used to make small feather trees and hung with little gingerbread boys with hearts, and vintage buttons to sell.
One time the show stopped dead when someone called out to her friend, oh look these trees have cute gingerbread boys with hearts on " ;)

For 32 seconds I read and considered the real cranberries on cinnamon floss, then I took a drink and remembered I'm not Martha Stewart lol.

I actually found three string a of very expensive candle lights (originally sixty bucks) for 4dollars each at my fav thrift store. They will be perfect for the servants tree, and I won't have to burn down the house!
