Poly question. Different brands = different colors?

Installed unfinished/natural oak beadboard on my island today along with iron corbels. My cabinets are "natural" oak. The beadboard currently looks very white in comparison. I slapped some poly on a scrap piece and it darkened the color but the tone is off. The cabinets are slightly more orange and the polyed beadboard is more brown. I need to see it during the day. It might not look bad on the island but I can't mess this up. The veneer that was on before was slightly off and I don't think it was that noticeable.

Do different brands of poly have different tones? I had a can of Minwax polyurethane in "clear semi gloss" I tried. I wondered about staining first but then figured that with the poly would just make it even darker. ?

Suggestions? I'd post on the woodworking forum but it moves super slow. I'd like to have this done before Thanksgiving since I'm hosting.

Wasn't going to post a photo but here you can see the color difference. You can see at the bottom of the piece how light it is before the poly. Please excuse the mess.

Painting the beadboard or cabinets isn't an option at this point. (not just because of Thanksgiving. :) )

It could be the aging of the poly on the cabinets, the aging of the wood, or even that the wood itself isn't the same. I have white oak floors and the colors vary from blond to dark toast. Also, the poly on the cabinets might be oil based, is the poly being used on the beadboard water based? Some poly is non-yellowing, some isn't. I'm not an expert, this is all just based on my experience.

Hmm... I have no idea what's on the cabinets. The poly on the beadboard is water based.

Seeing it during the day it actually isn't as off looking as I imagined. I think with it being on the island and not right against the cabinets I'll be ok. I moved it around and took some pics in different lighting. I AM even more concerned about when I add baseboard and corner pieces. The only place I saw oak base was Lowes but the color seemed very red. My cabinets and the beadboard are both red oak but I'm praying it doesn't look yet another tone at the bottom when I get it. I think I'll drag the beadboard piece into the store.

It's really a simple matter of alignment. Any site you visit will have or have had in the past several vocal, strong individuals who align in favor of certain products. Garden Web for example has a strong following of 2 stroke Lawn Boy folks on the mower forum. Yet Lawn Boys are virtually non existent in Nevada and particularly Las Vegas. In reference to Husqvarna it may not matter what others outside of Kalifornia think when you are in Kalifornia. If you go to Huskys web site and look at the models they have, over half are not available in Kalifornia and many that are not are considered the preferred models by folks who are high on Husky. Echo has always pretty much played the middle road when it comes to selling at service dealers and box stores. They've always had one of the better product lines and for the most part their line is universally available. Stihl upsets some by not having non service dealer availability amoung folks who won't buy from service shops. Husky dumped on service dealers by selling out to box stores. They also have a stigma of having a green product line that is considered by many as junk and that this green product quality creeps into their orange product. Echo has always been above average stuff and open to sell through any source. When they came into the market later then some of the others in the late 70's they had ground to make up. Service dealers were a bit slow to pick them up even though the product was service shop quality. Models like the hand held PB-200 blowers were priced well and the worlds first hand held gas blowers. Box stores were selling them off the shelves and getting rave reviews. The service shops couldn't ignore where Echo was going and most adopted them into their line up. Since Echo hadn't abandend them the way Husky would and their quaility never went in the dumper, servide shops tend to look at Echo in a neutral manner and you hear little grumbling that is initiated by service shop people like Husky. Alignments also come regionally based on distributor backing, support and promotion. Some areas simply have good or bad distribution centers and create their own environment as a result. Alignments on web sites have their own reasons and origins so if you hop around different sites you need to take it for what it's worth.

CM makes some good points here, but aren't the whole story.... (yeah....I know, this started in 2014) * No way is any store doing 3 "separate" draw-downs, unless CM meant 3 draw-downs from a single tinted can? * Yes I will...IF the customer is buying 3 Qts for me to play with....! * I've never been asked that in 15 years!!! * Depending on draw-down size, you start to affect the formula/color if you're brushing-out more than a tblsp total....ESPECIALLY for "whites". * We do a side-by-side, and tweak if necessary, until both parties are satisfied. * Then, we save the final "Matched" formula under a last name into the appropriate computer. * In all my years, we've maybe had 3 "paint batch issues"...& that's over ~~~ 8 different brands in 15 yrs. It's just too rare.... * It CAN take a half-hour to nail a color. And we've got damn-good scanners & tinters! >>> One over-arcing point here.... THERE IS NO such thing as a "perfect match". OPTICALLY, it's impossible. EVERY companies colorants & paints are different. It's like finding the "perfect spouse"!!! There's always SOMETHING that's a little "off". I strive for..."Close enough to be irrelevant". If I can't find my dried-off sample-match next to (or within a larger one) the original, it's done!! But...is it "PERFECT" ?!?!?!? Glad to see this posted as I know I had used it but kept confusing it with my perfectcolor. Just playing around with it and now I understand why I had such a hard time deciding between Both BM PUTNAM IVURY and SW COLONY BUFF. (they are close matches--- Putnam Ivory is what I used). And I also see tht BM SHAKER BEIGE was clearly the only choice for me in my kitchen/familyroom , at least with the brands I was looking at. (in other words, no real good matches). GREAT SITE. Good for a few hours over the weekend.:)

cultivar mean CULTI-vated VAR-ietal ... according to me anyway.. lol ... its the name in the quotes ... if the name is based on the color ... then that is that ... the species.. may have a base color range .. the first two usually latin ... lol ... names ... and it is associated with a specific color range ... as its part of the definition of the species ... imo.. flower color cant vary within the species ... so if you have a base plant that has purple flowers ... then the pink.. yellow.. bright orange variations .... whatever flower color.. is the variety.. or the varietal ... i know what i am trying to say .. but im sure im going to get roasted for trying to dumb it down .. and frankly.. barely knowing what i am talking about.. rotflmbo ... lets see who is mean about it ... bottom line.. we have to define the terms.. before we start talking in generalities ... https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffcm&q=CULtivated+VARietal&ia=web ken

Ok I was incorrect. The poly I used is oil. I honestly like the browner look over the red/pink/orange but think it really should match the cabinets better? Thoughts on the color thing? I'm trying to hold off showing the whole island because I wanted to do Ta Da thread.

My cabinets are Merillat and I was snooping around their site trying to find what they use on them and found in the specs you can buy the colors and sealers?

I'm going to make some phone calls tomorrow. All this oil and water based, stain and poly is making my head spin. If I can get the same stuff that's on my cabinets that would be wonderful.

I find this very intesting and half confusing. I'm sure Merillat isn't top of the line cabinet brand but..

They say the sealers/topcoats have UV inhibitors in them. It also then states..

"Natural sunlight contains Ultra Violet (UV) light rays that may affect the appearance of your cabinets. Merillat has tested our wood species and finishes so that you may be able to determine the approximate effect that UV rays may have on the cabinetry in your home.

The tests we use follow the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) standards for quartz ultra violet light (QUV). The actual results in your home will vary depending on these three factors:

1.Exposure to light (for example, direct from the south, east or west, or indirect from the north)
2.The portion of the cabinet that receives the light (top, base, etc.)
3.The wood itself. The finish does not change color, the wood itself will.
UV inhibitors have been applied to all Merillat cabinetry. With varying exposure to UV rays, and over time, color variations will occur"

What's up with #3? I thought the point of the UV inhibitors was so that it's protected and won't?
