Same cultivar/different color bloom - different growing habits

If a cultivar of a annual is the same (minus the color of the bloom), how much variation in growth have you guys observed. Granted some of the foliage on some may be different (dark green vs light green). In observing this years annuals, for example, the bright orange sunpatiens has 2X more blooms than the same in purple. This observation is not based on a single annual but multiples of each.

If it blooms a tad bit differently, would it make more sense to classify/categorize it in a different listing in the world of gardening. Or the listings are mainly going to be based on similar growth habitat in size but not bloom performance

I'm not sure I understand your question. Orange sunpatiens are not the same cultivar as purple ones.

I know...it's a weird ?. If a annual is listed in the same cultivar , aside from growing characteristics, should the -bloom performance- of all colors be the same under the same listed cultivar.

AFAIK, in the compact series, the purple is in the cultivar ?

The one in the woods is plain old Eupatorium rugosum, White Snakeroot. A very common late summer wildflower. The reddish brown one is probably Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate' like Chris says. A garden cultivar. I've got it and it's a positive weed, it seeds around so much. The wild one makes cows milk poisonous if they eat it. Supposedly it's what killed Abraham Lincoln's mother. And there are a bunch of other Eupatoriums with similar flowers but different leaves, but E. rugosum is by far the most common around here. Certain genes are dominant, and will show up as the same characteristic in offspring, as in parent. For example... in humans, brown eyes are a dominant trait... if Mom has blue eyes and Dad brown, chances are fairly good that the majority of offspring will have brown eyes. The same could be said of flowers... although, I'm not certain which traits are dominant in hippeastrums. I would assume, by looking at the more popular hybrids on the market, that red or red and white are dominant colors. Pink also seems to be a dominant color. I will know a lot more about which traits are dominant and which are recessive as I further my breeding program, and my first batch of seedlings mature and bloom. I'll know even more after I get blooms from the third generation... years down the road! In plant breeding, patience is quite a virtue... from seed to bloom can be several years. My husband and myself have been breeding American Bulldogs for the last 25 years, or so, and the time span between generations is relatively short. Seeing the parents is not a good indicator of what the offspring will be like... seeing the grandparents, other litters from the same pairing, and other relatives are better indicators of what can be expected. It's important to keep detailed records, and to utilize every tool at your disposal when breeding... the outcome of future breedings can be guessed at much better, with a more educated outlook. I use some of the same tools when breeding my plants... it gives me a better "picture" of what I can expect.

My brug is an orange but the blossoms start out white. Give it a day or two and you will get true colors! Nice looking plants! You absolutely CAN fertilize when brugs are blooming, just make sure that you are fertilizing with a fertilizer higher in phosphorus (the middle of the three numbers). It helps during the bloom stage. when they come out of bloom, then fertilize with a higher nitrogen ( first number) and potassium (last number) fertilizer! It helps to keep the plant nutrients in balance. If you fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer NOW, you will see a decrease in blooming. Good Luck!!!!

Aliska....my RE gets afternoon shade and if I remember correctly, I got mine at Ridaught's. Prettypetals....It's not hard at all to breed dl's. The AHS website has great instructions as does Tinkers and several other websites. It's really fun to me, not knowing what you'll get from a cross, and then getting something totally unexpected. My babies may not be the greatest but it sure is fun watching them grow and change. :) Boyd...how sweet, but I guess you're correct cause it's surely a lesson on genetics, isn't it? cultivar mean CULTI-vated VAR-ietal ... according to me anyway.. lol ...

its the name in the quotes ...

if the name is based on the color ... then that is that ...

the species.. may have a base color range .. the first two usually latin ... lol ... names ... and it is associated with a specific color range ... as its part of the definition of the species ... imo.. flower color cant vary within the species ...

so if you have a base plant that has purple flowers ... then the pink.. yellow.. bright orange variations .... whatever flower color.. is the variety.. or the varietal ...

i know what i am trying to say .. but im sure im going to get roasted for trying to dumb it down .. and frankly.. barely knowing what i am talking about.. rotflmbo ... lets see who is mean about it ...

bottom line.. we have to define the terms.. before we start talking in generalities ...

It's all good Ken. Normally, I would not even notice these things as -much, but this whole WHF situation has got me taking a keener eye at all things green

Sunpatiens are not all the same cultivar. Each color is a separate one and there are multiple cultivars of each color offered. Growth habit and appearance can vary from cultivar to cultivar.

The assumption that since they are all sunpatiens they are all the same cultivar is what may be misleading here.

In the realm of any plant/annual then, are we kinda saying every individual color of anything is it's own separate cultivar ? Yes, no, maybe, it depends ?

Gotta learn something new everyday. Always treated Annuals as X or Y or Z, and the color of each was all in the same cultivar......

However, with the recent observations, I can clearly see differences in growing characteristics even though I =presumed, it was just the same minus the color of the dang bloom=.

And I try to learn something new every day too. Plants are the perfect hobby for the curious. Even if one had time to spend every day all day for their entire life and lived to be 100, they would have just scratched the surface.

If you buy an annual that has a specific name - e.g. Sunpatiens 'Compact Electric Orange' or Petunia 'Crazytunia Moonstruck' or Calibrachoa 'Cabaret Hot Pink' - each one is a separate cultivar from any others in the same genus and species.

Indeed. I always considered the -compact- all the same cultivars.....just different colors, except for the ones that had the varigated leaves.

Prior to this bloom observation, I did know colors don't always grow true. Not a fan of pinks, but one year, i planted their Deep Rose. Worst year ever. It did not like the -sun- at all and all blooms were bleached out
